State-owned enterprises as knowledge-explorer agents
No full textThis paper deals with the role of the State Owned enterprises (SOEs) in innovation processes. Only a few studies focus on the contribution SOEs as companies might give to produce new knowledge and technological innovation. We argue, however, that SOEs are a pillar of the innovation process and we explore conditions that can make SOEs very effective. Through two in-depth case studies in two different industries (STMicroelectronics in the semiconductor and Thales Alenia Space in the space industry) we illustrate how SOEs can contribute to innovation by exploring new opportunities and recombining different sources of knowledge. We highlight the conditions that can make exploration and recombination possible. We also highlight the ability of the two companies to change their boundaries through a continuous wave of agreements, mergers and acquisitions. This way, they were able to expand beyond their domains in a way that matched the evolution of their original industries
Exploring the Metaverse from a Legacy Company Perspective: A Capabilities-Based View
No full textLegacy companies are firms that rely on stable business models, established internal processes, and familiar technologies. Existing research acknowledges that legacy companies need to explore new technologies, but scholars largely neglect to analyze how this process unfolds. This knowledge gap is particularly relevant when disruptive technological paradigms are about to modify the business arena, as in the case of the metaverse. This article presents an inductive qualitative approach to understanding why and how legacy companies explore the metaverse. The metaverse exploration process is purpose-driven and largely incremental. Capabilities co-specialization facilitates the use of complementary resources for new purposes, subsequently determining the path toward different strategic fit configurations
Investigating modular organization
No full textThis paper explores a new organizational form-modular organization-through a case-study approach. The aim is to isolate the specific properties that set this form apart from other known organizational forms. The case studies examined focus on the manufacturing process of small, medium and large companies in different industries, and provide a clear picture of modular organization. The analysis shows that modular organizations are an innovation per se and not the mere outcome of modular products. Modular organizations leverage decomposition by employing small units within a larger organization. Each unit is responsible for a specific domain, it is quasi-independent and makes autonomous decisions on various business issues. Modular organizations deal with suppliers directly, and are characterized by a flat structure. Companies based on modular organization can improve their efficiency in the high-tech and mature markets, and fully exploit their resources

Nel 1507 papa Giulio II gli affida il coordinamento e la supervisione dei lavori alla Basilica di S. Pietro, in questa occasione conosce direttamente Raffaello e Antonio da Sangallo, le loro botteghe e tramite loro entra in contatto con gli artisti più promettenti del tempo.
Quando Mario decide di ristrutturare la facciata del palazzo in via dei Calzolai a Volterra, di costruire la villa suburbana di San Donnino presso Villamagna e di progettare il sepolcro del fratello umanista in San Lino si circonda di egregi artisti come Baldassarre Peruzzi e Daniele Ricciarelli
