Straight to the Core - Explaining Union Responses to the Casualization of Work : the IG Metall Campaign for Agency Workers
No full textThe existing literature provides different accounts on the strategies of unions regarding marginal workers. It has been argued that under increasing labour market segmentation, unions have either to prioritize their core constituencies and to seek compromises with management, or to adopt inclusive strategies towards peripheral workers to counterbalance eroding bargaining power. This article shows that both strategies represent equally viable options to protect the interests of unions' core members. The strategic choice depends on the (perceived) competition between core and peripheral employees related to employers' personnel strategies; this affects the possible alignment of interests between unions' core members, on the one hand, and either management or peripheral employees, on the other. Our historical analysis of union strategies towards agency workers in the German metal sector illustrates this mechanism, and identifies institutional change towards liberalization as the trigger for aggressive segmentation strategies by employers and for inclusive union strategies
The equivalent impedance of power-minimising vibration controllers on plates
No full textStrategies for the suppression of plate vibration are investigated by considering the equivalent impedance of power-minimising vibration controllers. The total power transmitted to a plate by both a primary and secondary point forces is used as a function to be minimised. If the system is linear, then the total power has a known minimum value that is associated with an optimal solution for the secondary force. This minimum power, applied to infinite and finite plates, has been compared to the power reduction that can be achieved with passive vibration treatments. The ratio of the optimal secondary force and the resultant velocity at the secondary force location is termed the equivalent impedance of the active control system, and if only a single primary source is present, this equivalent impedance is entirely reactive but generally unrealisable.The approximation of the equivalent impedance by lumped parameter systems is considered. In particular, passive controllers, based on springs and dampers, have been analysed, although, in many practical applications, a rigid ground is not available to react these components off. The importance of this work lies in the practical approximation of these equivalent impedances with realisable passive systems. <br/

No full textLa famiglia Maffei è una delle casate volterrane più importanti. Mario Maffei (1463-1537) appartiene a questa illustre famiglia, egli ricopre cariche importanti presso la Curia romana.
Nel 1507 papa Giulio II gli affida il coordinamento e la supervisione dei lavori alla Basilica di S. Pietro, in questa occasione conosce direttamente Raffaello e Antonio da Sangallo, le loro botteghe e tramite loro entra in contatto con gli artisti più promettenti del tempo.
Quando Mario decide di ristrutturare la facciata del palazzo in via dei Calzolai a Volterra, di costruire la villa suburbana di San Donnino presso Villamagna e di progettare il sepolcro del fratello umanista in San Lino si circonda di egregi artisti come Baldassarre Peruzzi e Daniele Ricciarelli.
Quando Peruzzi fugge infatti da Roma è coinvolto direttamente nelle commissioni Maffei.

No full textIn contrast with recent literature which sees the German model as either a fundamentally resilient model of coordinated capitalism, or as undergoing liberalization only in the peripheral service sectors but not in the core manufacturing ones, in this paper we make two arguments. First, we argue that a fundamental change is taking place in the German growth model, which is drifting away from the typical wage-led growth pattern of other large Eurozone economies and moving towards exclusively export-led growth. Second, we document a liberalizing trend in German industrial relations institutions in both the manufacturing sectors and in the service sectors, and argue that it stands in a relationship of coevolution with the growth model shift: the liberal erosion of industrial relations institutions has facilitated the pursuit of an economic strategy based on external competitiveness and cost-cutting, while the decline of household consumption as a driver of growth has contributed to lock-in the export-led model and to generate further pressure for industrial relations liberalization
Global control of a vibrating plate using a feedback-controlled inertial actuator
No full textStrategies for the suppression of plate vibration are investigated by considering approximations to the equivalent impedance of power-minimizing vibration controllers. The total power transmitted to a plate by both a primary and a secondary point force is minimized and the equivalent impedance presented by the secondary source to the plate is considered.A novel device for active vibration control, based on an inertial actuator with displacement sensor and local PID controller and an outer velocity feedback control loop, is used to control the vibrating flexible plate. The impedance presented to the plate by this actuator is compared with the equivalent impedance of the optimal active control system. A frequency-domain formulation is used to analyse the stability and performance of an active vibration suppression system using this modified inertial actuator.The results of an experimental study of active vibration suppression on a flexible plate using the modified inertial actuator are then described. Theory and experiments agree well, demonstrating the effectiveness of the modified inertial actuator

La mancanza di rilievi e disegni, anteriori all’intervento di Francesco Mazzei, privava, fino ad oggi, della possibilità di ricostruire dettagliatamente l’aspetto della fabbrica. I progetti e i disegni inseriti nella pubblicazione consentono finalmente di ricostruire dettagliatamente l’aspetto del palazzo Pretorio di Volterra prima del ripristino in stile, diretto da Francesco Mazzeo Mazzei, di leggere le varie fasi della sua evoluzione e di cogliere la molteplicità dei “presenti storici”
