Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Exploration of neuronal and glial plasticity in the melanocortin system at the meal in a mouse model.
In 2015, Nature published the largest pangenomic association study to date linking genetic variants to body mass index. This study highlighted the role of the central nervous system in vulnerability to obesity and supports an original concept that cerebral plasticity plays an important role in the control of energy balance. Thus, reduced cerebral plasticity capacities could lead to inadequate dietary behaviors, which would increase the risk of weight gain under caloric pressure. The anorectic neurons POMC and the orexigenic neurons AgRP of the melanocortin system, which control the energy balance, actually show synaptic plasticity properties in the adult brain. These phenomena are shown in response to intense hormonal fluctuations induced by drastic genetic, surgical or nutritional manipulations. However, the physiological role of this synaptic plasticity within the melanocortin system has not been demonstrated yet. This study shows that cerebral plasticity phenomena are recapitulated at the meal scale in mice, depending on the prandial state, in response to moderate metabolic and hormonal changes. Indeed, 1 h standard diet exposure increases the electrical activity of the POMC neurons, which is correlated with a retraction of the astrocytic coverage around the POMC somas, with no change in synaptic configuration compared to the preprandial state. In contrast, 1 hour of high fat diet exposure does not modify the electrical activity of the POMC neurons and does not involve retraction of the astrocytic coverage. In addition, by pharmacological blockade of postprandial hyperglycemia, we showed that glucose is required for postprandial glial retraction. Finally, by a pharmacogenetic approach, we have shown that the inactivation of astrocytes modifies the feeding behavior and decreases the astrocytic coverage around the POMC neurons. These results suggest i)that astrocytes would play an inhibitory role on the electrical activity of POMC neurons ii) and that the post-prandial astrocytic retraction around POMC somas might remove inhibition of POMC neurons and might promote the sensation of satiety. This mode of regulation would not be activated during a high-fat meal, which would explain the low satietogenic properties of this type of meal
Implication of hypothalamic plasticity in the regulation of energy homeostasis in mice : effect of a high fat diet
In adult brain, this area remain plastic and the cellular network can be rapidly modified under environmental pressures. Studies show than hypothalamic remodeling are disturbed when metabolic diseases such as obesity or type II diabetes are declared. In this study we hypothesized that a high fat diet (HFD) inducing obesity could rapidly causes cell modifications in the adult hypothalamus network. To answer this question, we have established a one week HFD mouse model, and evaluated to type of hypothalamic plasticity which are synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. Our results show that HFD leads to an increase of the excitatory pre-synaptic tonus on the POMC neurons. This phenomenon implies polysialisation of the adhesion protein NCAM. We also demonstated than this rapid rewiring is reinforced by the increase of cell renewal, and more specifically by an increase of cell proliferation. Blockade of proliferation with the anti-mitotic araC prevent food intake regulation observed in control mice and accelerate the onset of obesity. These results suggest that neoformed cells are crucial for the maintenance of energy balance. In fact, new cells mainly differenciate into neurons, and the proportion of new POMC neurones of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) is twice the one of mice under standard diet (STD). HFD directs maturation of new neurons toward anorexigenic phenotype. Our experiments demonstrate than the hypothalamus rapidly remodels after an energy imbalance, and establish a succession of changes leading to a rapid restablishment of energy homeostasi
Characterization of postprandial inflammatory and endotoxemic responses in a murine model and study of the consequences on eating behavior.
Gut microbiota promotes digestion and assimilation of nutrients, influences peripheral metabolism, and modulates the host eating behavior. It releases molecular signals that can act directly humorally on the activity of satietogenic central centers, or indirectly by acting on the activity of the enteric nervous system or on the hormonal systems of the gastrointestinal tract. However, the anorectic behavioral effects of gut microbiota have been demonstrated during experimental manipulations, after supplementation with pre- or pro-biotics, or during fecal transplantations. These manipulations, which increase the effects of microbiota, do not allow to appreciate its constitutive activity. Most of these studies show an anorectic effect, without any indication of the structure and size of the meals. However, experts claim a positive effect of microbiota on satiety. In fact, the few rare studies showing an effect on the control of short-term food intake have been carried out in pathological conditions, obesity or diabetes specifically. Thus, the exact role of gut microbiota on the short-term regulation of food intake, which means without preliminary microbiota manipulation and in a non-disease state, remains to be clarified. In a loss-of-function study using antibiotics aimed to deplete the microbiota in mice, we evidence that the constitutive activity of gut microbiota promotes satiety. However, this satietogenic effect (i) depends on the composition of the meal, since it appears during the consumption of high-fat food, and (ii) is correlated with a specific postprandial microbial metabolic signature. Using pharmacological and genetical approaches, we show that this satietogenic effect does not depend on the postprandial endotoxemia or the inflammatory response mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome. Our findings indicate that gut microbiota controls host appetite at the meal scale in normal physiology. Interestingly, the satietogenic effect of gut microbiota is higher with a high-fat food than with a balanced food, indicating that gut microbiota metabolism is involved in the satietogenic properties of foods
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
