Interview with Mary Dixon Bellamy
Mary Bellamy, assistant professor emerita, discusses her career at UNCW. Mrs. Bellamy taught at Wilmington College from 1947-1950. She then taught at Wilmington College and UNCW from 1961 until her retirement in 1988. She taught Spanish and French in the Department of Modern Languages. In addition, she was a supervisor of student teachers of Spanish and French. Mrs. Bellamy discusses the early days of the college, when most of the students were veterans of World War II. She also tells of how she served as coordinator of the first and second college graduations, in 1948 and 1949 respectively, at the request of college president Thomas T. Hamilton. She discusses earning her master's degree in romance languages and literature in 1952, her family, and some of her colleagues at the college and university who were important to her, including Helena Cheek, Dean of Women and professor of modern languages, Marshall Crews, Dean of Men and professor of mathematics, college president William M. Randall, and others

Agrilus anthaxioides Hespenheide & Bellamy 2009, New Species
Agrilus anthaxioides Hespenheide, New Species (Figs. 8, 9, 21) Description. Holotype male: Broad, in cross section flattened above, moderately convex below, resembling species of Anthaxia, 4.80 mm long, 1.50 mm wide; black throughout, with dark reddish-coppery reflections on lower 1 / 2 of front, legs, and beneath, epistoma golden; more or less uniformly, moderately covered with short, silvery and recumbent setae, except largely glabrous on disc of pronotum except on basal 1 / 3 along midline and more complex pattern on elytra - glabrous or inconspicuously setose along suture behind basal depressions, in broad oblique area at middle and in small oval spots along suture beyond apical 2 / 3 - denser on dorsal portions of ventrites 3–5 and on prosternal process, anterior portion and midline of metasternum, and base of abdominal ventrite 1. Head with front nearly transverse from above, indistinctly depressed along midline on upper 1 / 3 of front, surface granular-rugose, shagreened; epistoma transversely carinate between antennal insertions, 1 / 3 width of distance between inner margins of eyes, shallowly emarginate below, eyes oval, slightly emarginate on upper inner margins; antennae compact, segment 4 triangular, strongly serrate from segment 5, segments 6–11 rounded-triangular, wider than long. Pronotum subequal to elytra at posterior margin, with sides shallowly expanded outward to apical 2 / 3 then arcuately rounded to apex; marginal and submarginal carinae nearly straight, separated for almost entire length, converging only at base when viewed from side; from above anterior margin produced as broadlyrounded lobe; basal margin strongly angulately emarginate at middle of each elytron, nearly transverse before scutellum; disk weakly convex, with strong oblique depressions interior to and in front of prehumeral carinae to lateral margins; prehumeral carinae very strong, curved, 1 / 2 length of pronotum; surface finely transversely rugose. Scutellum pentagonal with strong transverse ridge. Elytra wider at humeri and beyond middle, widest at apical 3 / 5, lateral margins shallowly emarginate between, apices narrowly, separately rounded, toothed; disk weakly convex, each elytron with oval depression at base and indistinct costa along suture to apex, separated by slightly raised area; surface finely imbricate, weakly transversely rugose. Prosternum with sides of prosternal process parallel between coxae, rounded at apex, prosternal lobe nearly transverse. Posterior coxae with posterior margin weakly biemarginate, upper exterior angles nearly quadrate. Abdomen with suture between ventrites 1 and 2 weakly indicated at sides, moderately convex throughout in cross section. Fore- and mesotibiae with short tooth on inner margin at apex. Hind legs with first metatarsal segment slightly shorter than next two combined, anterior tarsal claws cleft with slender, subequal inner tooth, meso- and metatarsal claws cleft with short, blunt inner tooth. Genitalia as in Figure 21. Allotype female: As male except 4.65 mm long, 1.50 mm wide; epistoma reddish-coppery; setae sparse and appressed on prosternal process, anterior portion and midline of metasternum, and base of abdominal ventrite 1; tarsal claws similar on all feet, cleft with short, blunt inner tooth. Adults have been collected on Acacia sp., Cassia sp., Celtis sp., and Senna wislizeni (A. Gray) H.S. Irwin & Barneby. Etymology. Named for the superficial resemblance to members of the “ aeneogaster ”species group of the genus Anthaxia. Discussion. This species is unusual among Agrilus in its superficial resemblance to members of the genus Anthaxia in being broad and relatively flattened dorsoventrally. It is also unusual in being minimally sexually dimorphic, with males having only somewhat denser setae on the prosternal process and the midline of the meso-and metasterna, the fore- and mesotibiae with short tooth on inner margin at apex, and different tarsal claws. Males measure 3.95–6.25 mm long (mean = 4.94 mm for 56 specimens), and females measure 3.70–6.70 mm long (mean = 5.25 mm for 59 specimens). There is a very similar but probably distinct species that has been collected in San Luis Potosi.Published as part of Hespenheide, Henry A. & Bellamy, Charles L., 2009, New species, taxonomic notes, and records for Agrilus Curtis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) of México and the United States, pp. 50-68 in Zootaxa 2084 on pages 59-61, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.27480
