[Letter] 1811 September 5, Keswick [to] Reverend Dr. [Andrew] Bell, Durham / Robert Southey.
A note in pencil on the verso indicates that Bell was considered the Founder of the National System of Education.Southey writes to Bell to inform him that he has just returned home, and though he has not unpacked his books and papers yet, Southey declares himself ready to "gird up my loins for the contest" which will involve the _Quarterly_ and seeking "ample vengeance" upon Bell\u27s "Edinburgh enemy & calumniator whom I understand to be [Bronyham?]-- not Jeffery as I had erroneously supposed." After describing his visit to a school, Southey encourages Bell to "Go on dear Sir!" and tells him that when he thinks of him or of Clarkson he is glad to "have the honour of numbering among my friends the two greatest benefactors of the human race who have appeared since Martin Luther." Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality
This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Servants, Aestheticism, and "The Dominance of Form"
The fictional representation of domestic servants reveals the relationship between aesthetic form and social domination in the work of aesthetes from Wilde to Henry James and beyond. Tracing the sources of Wilde's An Ideal Husband and Dorian Gray and James' The Ambassadors in French decadence and situating them within the history of service, I show that aestheticist depictions of servants recall, through literary form, the aesthete's dependence on servants' labor. Relaxed Bell inequalities with arbitrary measurement dependence for each observer
Bell's inequality was originally derived under the assumption that experimenters are free to select detector settings independently of any local “hidden variables” that might affect the outcomes of measurements on entangled particles. This assumption has come to be known as “measurement independence” (also referred to as “freedom of choice” or “settings independence”). For a two-setting, two-outcome Bell test, we derive modified Bell inequalities that relax measurement independence, for either or both observers, while remaining locally causal. We describe the loss of measurement independence for each observer using the parameters M[subscript 1] and M[subscript 2], as defined by Hall in 2010, and also by a more complete description that adds two new parameters, which we call M[subscript 1][over ̂] and M[subscript 2][over ̂], deriving a modified Bell inequality for each description. These “relaxed” inequalities subsume those considered in previous work as special cases, and quantify how much the assumption of measurement independence needs to be relaxed in order for a locally causal model to produce a given violation of the standard Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (Bell-CHSH) inequality. We show that both relaxed Bell inequalities are tight bounds on the CHSH parameter by constructing locally causal models that saturate them. For any given Bell inequality violation, the new two-parameter and four-parameter models each require significantly less mutual information between the hidden variables and measurement settings than previous models. We conjecture that the new models, with optimal parameters, require the minimum possible mutual information for a given Bell violation. We further argue that, contrary to various claims in the literature, relaxing freedom of choice need not imply superdeterminism

Diane Cobb Cashman (1938- ) is a prolific local author and researcher. She was a former president and longtime archivist for the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. She was also involved in the incorporation of the Historic St. Thomas Preservation Society and served on the boards of the Bellamy Mansion Museum and Historic Wilmington Foundation. Andrew Harriss, Jr. (1898-1998) was a much decorated veteran of Word Wars I and II and was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. (See Harriss, Andrew, Jr.
Earthquake distributions at volcanoes: models and field observations
Volcanic earthquakes can provide significant insight into physical processes acting at volcanoes, such as magma accumulation and the mechanisms of deformation of the volcanic edifice. At the same time a statistical analyses of volcanic seismicity prior to an eruption (for example variations in the Gutenberg-Richter b-value – a measure of the proportion of large and small events) are a key component of the practical problem of forecasting eruptions. This thesis aims to tackle two key areas of research that are closely related to these important overall goals, by comparing seismic data obtained from currently-active volcanoes with direct field observation of faulting and fracturing from an exhumed extinct volcano. First I introduce a new approach that improves the accuracy and reliability of calculating spatial and temporal variations of the seismic b-value for frequency-magnitude distributions at active volcanoes, and apply it to several test cases. An extensive literature review highlights a large variability and lack of standardisation of methodology used to analyse frequency-magnitude distributions in the past. Motivated by this, I introduce and test a new workflow to standardise calculating completeness magnitudes of seismic catalogues. The review also highlights the fact that uncertainties in estimating the threshold magnitude of complete reporting have been ignored to date. Here I use synthetic catalogues to quantify this previously unidentified source of error, and provide a template to estimate the total error in b-value. In standard analysis it is also common to sample time windows subjectively, although this can introduce bias. Here I develop a new objective, iterative sampling method that calculates the b-value as a full probability density function which need not have a Gaussian error structure. Application of this method reveals ‘mode-switching’ behaviour for the first time in volcanic seismic catalogues. The results also show b-values often do have a value indistinguishable from that of tectonic seismicity (b=1 within error). Nevertheless there are also several robust examples of real high b-values, as high as 3.3. The second part of the study is based on a field campaign to investigate the fracture zones from an exhumed volcanic setting on the Isle of Rum, NW Scotland. Lithological and structural mapping is used to collect structural data that is then used to quantify and explain complex fracture patterns and the underlying intra-magma chamber processes that occurred there in the geological past. In particular I identify a singular collapse event within the youngest volcanic unit, the Central Intrusion. This is responsible for forming the observed igneous breccias and the lineaments on satellite images that I interpret as contemporaneous faults. Using appropriate scaling relations, I infer the b-value for the Rum lineaments data. This would have been relatively high, at a value of approximately 1.9. The final part of the study compares the fracture data on Rum to earthquake distributions at El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands. Here I show the level of fractal clustering is similar in both an extinct (60 Ma) and a currently active volcano. Both show similar high levels of clustering. However, in both cases there is a difference between the capacity and correlation dimensions (D₀≠D₂), implying the set of rupture sources or mapped fault traces form a multi-fractal set. Broadly, the scaling of fracture sets in an ancient volcano has similar properties to those observed in a modern volcano, except that the Rum data imply a greater absolute degree of spatial clustering of deformation than that for the recent unrest at El Hierro
The matrix sign function for solving surface wave problems in homogeneous and laterally periodic elastic half-spaces
The matrix sign function is shown to provide a simple and direct method to derive some fundamental results in the theory of surface waves in anisotropic materials. It is used to establish a shortcut to the basic formulas of the Barnett-Lothe integral formalism and to obtain an explicit solution of the algebraic matrix Riccati equation for the surface impedance. The matrix sign function allows the Barnett-Lothe formalism to be readily generalized for the problem of finding the surface wave speed in a periodically inhomo-geneous half-space with material properties that are independent of depth. No partial wave solutions need to be found; the surface wave dispersion equation is formulated instead in terms of blocks of the matrix sign function of i times the Stroh matrix.NOTICE: this is the author’s version of a work that was accepted for publication in Wave Motion.
