    Abstract"Efficient Solutions and Cost-Optimal Analysis for Existing School Buildings" (Paolo Maria Congedo, Delia D’Agostino, Cristina Baglivo, Giuliano Tornese, Ilaria Zacà) [1] is the paper that refers to this article. It reports the data related to the establishment of several variants of energy efficient retrofit measures selected for two existing school buildings located in the Mediterranean area. In compliance with the cost-optimal analysis described in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and its guidelines (EU, Directive, EU 244,) [2,3], these data are useful for the integration of renewable energy sources and high performance technical systems for school renovation. The data of cost-efficient high performance solutions are provided in tables that are explained within the following sections.The data focus on the describe school refurbishment sector to which European policies and investments are directed. The files give the cost-optimal solutions for a kindergarten (REF1) and a nursery (REF2) school located in Sanarica and Squinzano (province of Lecce Southern Italy). The two reference buildings differ for construction period, materials and systems.The eleven tables provided contain data about the localization of the buildings, geometrical features and thermal properties of the envelope, as well as the energy efficiency measures related to walls, windows, heating, cooling, dhw and renewables. Output values of energy consumption, gas emission and costs are given for a financial and a macro-economic analysis.This data article provides 288 and 96 combinations for REF1 and REF2, respectively. The output values are obtained using the software ProCasaClima 2015v.2.0

    Modulation of thalamocortical (TC) relay neuron function has been implicated in the sedative and hypnotic effects of general anaesthetics. Inhibition of TC neurons is mediated predominantly by a combination of phasic and tonic inhibition, together with a recently described ‘spillover’ mode of inhibition, generated by the dynamic recruitment of extrasynaptic ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA)A receptors (GABAARs). Previous studies demonstrated that the intravenous anaesthetic etomidate enhances tonic and phasic inhibition in TC relay neurons, but it is not known how etomidate may influence spillover inhibition. Moreover, it is unclear how etomidate influences the excitability of TC neurons. Thus, to investigate the relative contribution of synaptic (a1ß2?2) and ex-trasynaptic (a4ß2d) GABAARs to the thalamic effects of etomidate, we performed whole-cell recordings from mouse TC neurons lacking synaptic (a10/0) or extrasynaptic (d0/0) GABAARs. Etomidate (3µM) significantly inhibited action-potential discharge in a manner that was dependent on facilitation of both synaptic and extrasynaptic GABAARs, although enhanced tonic inhibition was dominant in this respect. Additionally, phasic inhibition evoked by stimulation of the nucleus reticularis exhibited a spillover component mediated by d-GABAARs, which was significantly prolonged in the presence of etomidate. Thus, etomidate greatly enhanced the transient suppression of TC spike trains by evoked inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Collectively, these results suggest that the deactivation of thalamus observed during etomidate-induced anaesthesia involves potentiation of tonic and phasic inhibition, and implicate amplification of spillover inhibition as a novel mechanism to regulate the gating of sensory information through the thalamus during anaesthetic states.</p

    Lucha Corpi\u27s novel, Delia\u27s Song, operates on several levels which remain basically disparate; that is, we seldom have a sense of complete integration. Perhaps, finally Delia herself, must be seen as symbolic of the Chicana in search of self, although even this falters at times. Finally we cannot be sure if Delia represents all Chicana women, the educated Chicana, or the emerging Chicana. Even her name, Artemis, the one from Delos .... Delia, the beautiful huntress, compounds the dilemma. Huntress of what? We\u27ve witnessed her sexual encounters with various males, Daniel, Mario, Fernando, Roger (the Anglo), Jeff, which suggest that a paradox exists even in her name. Artemis was not only a beautiful huntress, she was also chaste. Often the omniscient author suggests that perhaps Delia is schizophrenic. Two people, equally strong, live in you, Cammille, the dabbler in astrology, tells her. Nor is this the first time the idea has occurred. The character herself eludes us, even though in Joycean style, the author allows us free access to Delia\u27s mind. She claims she\u27s always been subservient, but we see a unique individual behaving in unorthodox ways, a paradox again. And the title is no less difficult. What is her song? Is it a lament, a dirge? Is it a song of triumph? A lyric? We learn from Mattie that this is the title of one of Delia\u27s poems that is shaky at the end. The uncertainty remains

    Research within the past decade has provided compelling evidence that anaesthetics can act directly as allosteric modulators of transmitter-gated ion channels. Recent comparative studies of the effects of general anaesthetics across a structurally homologous family of inhibitory amino acid receptors that includes mammalian GABAA, glycine and Drosophila RDL GABA receptors have provided new insights into the structural basis of anaesthetic action at transmitter-gated channels. In this article, the differential effects of general anaesthetics across inhibitory amino acid receptors and the potential relevance of such actions to general anaesthesia will be discussed

    Complementary regulation of anaesthetic activation of human (alpha(6)beta(3)gamma(2L)) and Drosophila (RDL) GABA receptors by a single amino acid residue

    1. The influence of a transmembrane (TM2) amino acid located at a homologous position in human beta1 (S290) and beta3 (N289) GABAA receptor subunits and the RDL GABA receptor of Drosophila (M314) upon allosteric regulation by general anaesthetics has been investigated. 2. GABA-evoked currents mediated by human wild-type (WT) alpha6beta3gamma2L or WT RDL GABA receptors expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes were augmented by propofol or pentobarbitone. High concentrations of either anaesthetic directly activated alpha6beta3gamma2L, but not RDL, receptors. 3. GABA-evoked currents mediated by human mutant GABAA receptors expressing the RDL methionine residue (i.e. alpha6beta3N289Mgamma2L) were potentiated by propofol or pentobarbitone with approximately 2-fold reduced potency and, in the case of propofol, reduced maximal effect. Conspicuously, the mutant receptor was refractory to activation by either propofol or pentobarbitone. 4. Incorporation of the homologous GABAA beta1-subunit residue in the RDL receptor (i.e. RDLM314S) increased the potency, but not the maximal effect, of GABA potentiation by either propofol or pentobarbitone. Strikingly, either anaesthetic now activated the receptor, an effect confirmed for propofol utilizing expression of WT or mutant RDL subunits in Schnieder S2 cells. At RDL receptors expressing the homologous beta3-subunit residue (i.e. RDLM314N) the actions of propofol were similarly affected, whereas those of pentobarbitone were unaltered. 5. The results indicate that the identity of a homologous amino acid affects, in a complementary manner, the direct activation of human (alpha6beta3gamma2L) and RDL GABA receptors by structurally distinct general anaesthetics. Whether the crucial residue acts as a regulator of signal transduction or as a component of an anaesthetic binding site per se is discussed
