Architecture as inauguration of ‘Das da sein’
No full textThis essay explores a form of architecture designed for the human body and simultaneously examines the exact point at which the body becomes human. Architecture is strictly anthropological. It is something that is needed by humans. The ‘human’ is identified as ‘the there’ – in a circulation of the sense – and he unendingly opposes the affirmative interrogation of the artefacts. The primitive artefact is architecture as a material necessity – a metonym for the stance of ‘the there’ i.e. the ‘human’. This contiguity provokes an operation of incorporation: ‘the there’ is the circulation of the sense at the moment at which the human senses make sense. This primarily consists of ‘thing-ness’ or dignity: in other words, the real intention of architecture.
The essential notions deployed in this exercise are: stances, human as dis-stances and the significance of architecture. No full textThis paper discusses architecture and the place (lieu) not as conceptualised by philosophy, by physics or even popularly as a milieu, an environmental continuum but rather as the effect of an operation: An operation of division, of a cut, as psychoanalyst; an operation that gives birth to the subject as a place (lieu) and not as a substance. We are there in another universe which is not the one of the strong ego. An operation of inscription and a distancing of the impact of the real, according to the architect who generates with his work, emptiness where things have a place (avoir lieu). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. An intentional view on the design-science relationship
No full textThe paper aims to shed more light on the nature of design and how it relates to the nature of scientific research, from an ontological and epistemological point of view. To this end, the notion of intentionality as advanced by John Searle is used to clarify the relationship
designers establish with the world as compared to the relationship established by
scientists. Typically, designers’ and scientists’ activities relate to objects in the world.
The nature of this relationship, however, considerable differs: across the board, scientists
aim at giving accounts of how the world is, while designers want to change it. The
scientist's mind can thus be characterized by what Searle calls a mind-to-world direction
of fit, whereas the designer’s mind is dominated by a world-to-mind direction of fit. After
introducing the concepts of intentionality and direction of fit, the paper analyzes in detail the direction of fit in successive stages of the design process—both as hypothesized by design theories and as operational in design practice. This forms the basis for a nuanced,
yet fundamental comparison with the process of knowledge production in science, which

Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The impact of the gesture
No full textThe intention of this paper is to be precise about 'how can architecture itself have an impact?' and about the conditions of thoughts that make possible an answer to this question. The paper shows that in the mainstream of thoughts –architecture being there to bring aesthetics on a distribution of function, which shall be shown as the anthropocentric position -, there is no impact of architecture on Man because Man is stronger as architecture.
The author defends then a position where architecture has an inaugural act and then a gesture which is to sustain a precise sensibility. This position, which is not in an anthropocentric field of thoughts is not very shiny but very efficient to explain the impact of the gesture of architecture. Here it is: Architecture establish in the Real, at the threshold of the Reality, a disposition of matters, -disposition called 'Space'- for the first 'well-being' of the subject.
