Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Facilitatory interaction between cutaneous afferents from low threshold mechanoreceptors and nociceptors in segmental reflex pathways to alpha-motoneurons

EPSPs evoked by air puff stimulation of the hairy skin of the hindlimb or by low strength stimulation of the lateral sural nerve were facilitated by radiant heat of 50-53 degrees C but not by radiant heat of 42-43 degrees C. The results indicate that afferents from low threshold mechanoreceptors and from nociceptors of the skin converge onto common interneurons in reflex pathways to alpha-motoneurons. This would allow a functionally useful cooperation of these two types of afferents in spinal motor control

Ultrasonic absorption spectra at frequencies between 300 kHz and 3 GHz are reported for aqueous solutions of MgCl2 CaCl2, SrCl2, NiCl2, and CuCl2. All spectra reveal a Debye-type relaxation term with small amplitude. The relaxation time values derived from the spectra display a small range only (0.2 ns less than or equal to tau less than or equal to 0.6 ns), corresponding with the tau values for solutions of Mg(NO3)(2) and Ca(NO3)(2) in water. The relaxation term is suggested to be due to the second step in the Eigen-Tamm scheme of stepwise association and dissociation of ions, namely the equilibrium between the complex of encounter and the outer sphere complex. The relaxation amplitudes reflect special properties of the ions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

    No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

Kinetics of Ca2+ complexation with some carbohydrates in aqueous solutions

For solutions of four saccharides in water with alkaline-earth chlorides added ultrasonic attenuation spectra between 100 kHz and 2 GHz are reported and compared to those for carbohydrate solutions without salt. Calcium chloride does not alter the relaxation times in the spectra of D-glucose and D(+)-maltose solutions, reflecting the exocyclic hydroxymethyl group rotation, a saccharide-saccharide association, and, with the disaccharide, also motions of both rings of a molecule relative to one another. The spectra of D-xylose and D-fructose solutions are substantially changed by the salts. With both saccharides an additional term with relaxation time around some nanoseconds exists which is assigned to a rearrangement of a carbohydrate-cation complex. Other relaxation terms of these saccharide solutions are also subject to noticeable changes by the salt, indicating specific carbohydrate-cation interactions. The ultrasonic spectra show that such interactions may exist also with carbohydrates which do not display the particular hydroxyl group sequences that are considered to promote complexation with cations.
