No full textAlok Kumar Kanungo’s Mapping the Indo-Pacific Beads vis-à-vis Papanaidupet discusses the production of a particular kind of glass bead purported to have originated in South India over two and a half millennia ago. This Indo-Pacific glass bead is claimed to have spread across vast areas of southern and southeastern Asia as well as the eastern sub-region of the African continent. Borne from nearly two decades of Kanungo’s archaeological and ethnographic research on glass and glass beads in India and surrounding regions, this book maps the spread of the Indo-Pacific (IP) beads in Southeast Asia, documents the process of production of the beads at the extant glass bead making factories at Papanaidupet, and describes the social, economic, and ritual use of the beads across Southeast Asia. Contributing to our knowledge of the importance of India in the history of glass, the author details complexities associated with the archaeological study of glass. These difficulties include (1) reconstructing techniques of glass bead production, (2) identifying debris representing different stages in the production chain, and (3) understanding the social collaboration embedded in each step of the production to ensure a successful final product

V teoretické části se autorka zabývá počátky osidlování Nebrasky, důvody emigrace a přispění Čechů k budování státu Nebraska.
V praktické části prostřednictvím konverzací s třemi občany žijícími v Nebrasce a s jednou Češkou, která zde strávila rok, autorka mapovala stav české kultury v Nebrasce a její možnou udržitelnost pro další generace.ObhájenoThis bachelor thesis deals in immigration of the Czech nation to the United States of America, especially to the state of Nebraska. The thesis is shortly mapping the history of settlement of newly formed state of Nebraska and the influence of Czech culture on further development of the state. The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part the author deals with the beginning of settlement of Nebraska, reasons of leaving homeland and contribution of the Czechs to forming the state of Nebraska.
In the practical part through conversations with three citizens of Nebraska and one Czech respondent, who spent almost a year in Nebraska the author was investigating the situation of the Czech culture in Nebraska and its possible sustainability for other generations
English as a lingua franca: theory and practical implications
No full textTato bakalářská práce se zabývá lingvistickým fenoménem "Angličtina jako lingua franca" a jejím cílem je pomocí výzkumu zjistit, do jaké míry znají vysokoškolští studenti tento pojem, a jak moc jsou s ním v kontaktu.
Úvodem je v práci zmíněn historický vývoj a proces rozšíření angličtiny do takové míry, že se stala světovým jazykem a zajistila si tak dominantní pozici po celém světě. Následně autor představuje a definuje pojem "Angličtina jako lingua franca" s pomocí názorů a definicí různých lingvistů, zabývajících se touto tématikou společně s určitými charakteristickými lingvistickými prvky tohoto jevu. Dále se autor věnuje roli angličtiny jako lingvi francy v určitých sférách společnosti, například v mezinárodním obchodě, informativních technologií či systému vzdělání.
Poslední část práce obsahuje výzkum, provedený za pomoci dotazníku, který zkoumá vědomosti a preference vysokoškolských studentů ve spojení s angličtinou jako lingvou francou.ObhájenoThis Bachelor thesis studies the linguistic phenomenon of English as a lingua franca (ELF) and investigates the degree of awareness that university students have of this phenomenon.
The thesis includes a brief outline of the history of English spreading and securing its dominant position around the world as a global language. Subsequently, the author introduces English as a lingua franca, considering insights and definitions of linguists, as well as some of the linguistic features from the field of lexicogrammar, phonology and pragmatics occurring within this phenomenon. A role of ELF in particular areas such as international business, information technology, aviation and education is shown.
The last part of the thesis contains research conducted by the means of a questionnaire, where the knowledge and preferences of university students in connection with ELF are tested

No full textCílem práce je analýza sociálních a rasových dilemat v díle Doris Lessingové, a to v románu Tráva zpívá. Práce zkoumá především chování hlavní postavy díla, Mary Turnerové, které se práce snaží dešifrovat. Pozornost je soustředěna na nalezení počátků jednání Mary Turnerové a faktory, které její jednání ovlivnily. Práce taktéž obsahuje biografickou informaci o autorce díla, díky které je možné posoudit, zda zvolený román obsahuje autobiografické prvky. Teoretická část práce obsahuje hlavní motivy, které se v díle objevují a slouží jako východisko praktické analýzy. Praktická část práce sestává z analýzy vybraných dilemat, se kterými se postavy v díle střetly. V práci je použito množství citací a ukázek z díla.ObhájenoThe aim of this bachelor´s thesis is to examine social and racial dilemmas in Doris Lessing´s novel The Grass Is Singing. Firstly, it aims to analyse the behaviour of the main character Mary Turner, and the factors that influenced her behaviour. Subsequently, it focuses on finding how many autobiographical aspects were used in the novel. The theoretical part provides information not only on the author Doris Lessing, her life and work, but also on the main motives which are used in the novel. The practical part of the thesis is based on dilemmas encountered by three literary characters - Tony Martson, Mary Turner and Dick Turner. With the help of examples and quotations from The Grass Is Singing, the thesis attempts to show specific dilemmas the above mentioned protagonists have to deal with and their reactions to these "life dilemmas"
The Recent Inflation Crisis and Long-run Economic Growth in India: An Empirical Survey of Threshold Level of Inflation
No full text This article investigates the existence of a threshold level of inflation and how any such level affects the growth of Indian economy. The article also seeks to examine the dynamic short-run and long-run relationship between inflation and economic growth in India. By employing spline regression method to estimate the threshold level of inflation and the long-run and short-run relationships, the results show a statistically significant structural break in the relationship between inflation and economic growth at 4 per cent. The study suggests that if inflation exceeds the threshold point, that is, 4 per cent, it will negatively affect economic growth. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model bound testing cointegration suggests that there are two cointegration vectors when gross domestic product and rate of interest are considered as the dependent variables. This result confirms the existence of the long-run equilibrium relationship between economic growth, inflation, exchange rate and rate of interest. From the long-run analysis, the study found that inflation is positively related to economic growth, whereas the other variables are not significant. JEL Classification: E4, E6 </jats:p
