Social media technologies initially used for socializing, and entertainment have in recent years expanded their reaches into learning activities providing an open space for students’ engagement. The positive effect of such technologies on pedagogy is to make learning applicable to the cyber environment to achieve independent and collaborative learning. Students learn to communicate and collaborate electronically. This requires rethinking the way pedagogical activities are carried out to develop synergistic learning relationships to create the best learning model in line with this new educational paradigm. This paper investigates Algerian students’ engagement to understand the developmental implications of academic achievement. The author seeks to advance the use of instructional interactions in two ways: i: enhancing the academic validity of social networking, ii: making the link to students’ collaborative learning explicit. Data is collected from 300 students. Findings show that social media are used for a multitude of purposes and Facebook is most popular

Abstract The fast-paced changing information environment calls for continual development of libraries and information institutions to cope with the changes of the digital environment. To ensure this, there is a need to understand the current employment trends to identify the competencies and skills required of professionals. The advent of information and communication technology (ICT) has created a real paradigm shift in Library operations so information professionals are working at the leading edge of the internet and the web technology; leading to more web-based services. Moreover, the digital environment is reshaping the whole context within which information is being generated, processed, and delivered through online networks. This has strategic significance for library professionals in facing the challenges of this ever-changing information environment in which ICT is the major source for survival and development. This is having a direct impact on library development; a development which is reflected in the literature as required by the emerging market place. The inevitable consequences for professionals are to be equipped with the necessary skills, traits and competencies applicable to the cyber environment to meet the demands of the ever changing job market. The paper identifies the characteristics required of library and information (LIS) workers to serve the expanding and changing information market of the 21 st century, as reflected in job announcements posted on the listserv of the IFLA from January to October 2014 to create a synergy between the profession and the current employment trends. A sample set of 259 job advertisements posted by academic, public and special libraries are selected and are grouped in four categories these are: 1. Technology-based positions with 48.71% of the advertisements. 2. Public/information services skills listed by 22.87% of the openings. 3. Technical services skills scored 18.64% of the available jobs. 4. Personal attributes are mentioned in 9.74% positions. Most positions are available in Academic libraries

This has led to a new approach to scholarly communication under the digital institutional repositories and the open access to information. These are used by academic institutions at the beginning of the third millennium as a means to highlight its scientific activity and preserve its intellectual memory. Researchers have invested this new medium to present their research and scientific studies using self-archiving. This has the greatest impact in overcoming financial and legal restrictions imposed by commercial publishers therefore, creating a new concept to scholarly communication and provided valuable opportunities for researchers to introduce their intellectual production on a large scale and increase their citation rates. It also allowed the university to identify its intellectual assets with the aim of achieving local and international visibility and increasing its impact factor to improve its ranking among higher education institutions. This study aims to investigate the opinions of faculty members at the University of Constantine2, Abdelhamid Mahri, to learn about their attitudes towards academic digital repositories and their readiness to contribute their scientific production. The study used the descriptive approach to data collection. The findings revealed the willingness of the respondents to deposit their work in institutional repositories, but some expressed concerns about piracy, infringement of their intellectual rights and not being considered in their promotion to higher academic rank

Library and information education in Algeria: a framework for curriculum development

    No full text
We live in an era characterised by the explosion of information. As societies are becaning more and more dependent on information, not only for the generation of knowledge but also for the generation of revenues, it is imperative that each society develops its own information infrastructure. Such development depends to a great extent on the availability of qualified library and information staff. These should be well trained and equipped with the proper knowledge, skills and attitudes to engage in library and information development programmes. Good training requires, among other facilities, an efficient library education system and a relevant curriculum. The intention of this study is to provide a framework for approaching curriculum development in Algerian library schools. Included is an overview of the process of curriculum development as seen through a review of the literature, and a look at different approaches to curriculum development and how curriculum design and planning has changed over the years. In surveying library education programmes in Algeria it was found that arrong other findings there is strong evidence of the lack of qualified teachers and poor teaching/learning facilities to attempt innovations in the curriculum. These issues are examined in the light of accepted standards in order to establish contrasting features, and measure the adequacy of library education in Algeria. The study reviews curriculum developnent activity in the Algerian general education system with emphasis on library education. It brings to attention the essential facts necessary for understanding the environmental factors which led to the current problems and tensions in the Algerian library and information scene. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
