No full textSeattle, Washington, United StatesElazar Behar discusses his parents, his family’s life on the Greek island of Rhodes, and their immigration to New York in 1917 – they came to Seattle the following year. Behar talks at length about the work of his father, David J. Behar, for Congregation Ezra Bessaroth Synagogue as haham, hazzan, counselor, community representative, and dispenser of aid. Behar discusses the social, religious, political, and economic development of the Sephardic community in Seattle; and describes in great detail how the Sephardim celebrated the Jewish holidays, the Sabbath, as well as family and personal celebrations. Behar describes the affairs of Ezra Bessaroth including its move to Seward Park. Additional topics include the purchase of the Bikur Holim, attempts to merge the Sephardic congregations, the demise of the Ahavath Achim Congregation, his father’s relationship with Ashkenazi rabbis, Sephardic Jewish education, thwarted attempts to modernize services, and Sephardic contributions to the Jewish community at large.
