    Music for classical guitar by South African composers : a historical survey, notes on selected works and a general catalogue

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 296-309).This is the first comprehensive investigation of music for, or including, the classical guitar by South African composers. The focus of this research has been, firstly, to uncover as much of the repertoire as possible, and, secondly, to collate, study, catalogue and report on the information. A brief historical survey of the guitar in South Africa provides the context within which this study was conducted. The primary sources of quantitative data collection were through the archival catalogues of the South African Music Rights Organisation and through personal contact with guitarists, composers and guitar teachers. Other sources consulted were publishers, broadcasting corporations, recording companies, libraries and the internet. The body of the dissertation comprises biographical sketches, background notes, analyses and technical notes on 17 selected solo and chamber works dating from 1947 to 2007 by some of South Africa's most prominent composers and guitaristcomposers. The repertoire ranges in style from the traditional and ethnically inspired to the experimental and abstract. As this is an empirical survey, each selected entry includes details on instrumentation, duration, level of difficulty, number of pages, scordatura, commissions or requests, sources or publishers, premières and recordings. A biography of each composer is provided as well as background notes which offer an overview of the selected work. The notes discuss historical, cultural, musical and extra-musical influences, and frequently include references to interview material. The commentaries on the selected works, with musical examples, include an analytical component describing structure, form, stylistic and compositional elements, while the technical observations include performance suggestions and a grading for each work

    Metrology and proportion in the window tracery of medieval Ireland : an empirical study of Ormond and Connaught

    THESIS 9580.1THESIS 9580.2THESIS 9580.3This study developed a methodology to investigate whether evidence could be found for the application of systems of proportion and metrology to the design of late medieval window tracery in Ireland. Source data was collected for over two-hundred windows, across three medieval kingdoms, using the three-dimensional measurement technique of stereo photogrammetry. Measurements of window width and height, light width and height, mullion width, tracery field height, and arch span were extracted for each window. Two full building investigations were made using terrestrial laser scanning to generate three-dimensional ground plans and models of a range of architectural details. Measurements from the windows, plans, and details were interrogated using a set of Visual Basic for Applications macros in Microsoft Excel to indicate the preferred unit(s) of measurement and any evidence of the presence of defined ratios between significant features

    The Application of Web 2.0 Technologies as an Experimental Method of Teaching Remote Sensing at DIT, Ireland

    This paper describes the implementation of an experimental method of delivery for a module of remote sensing material to second year students on the BSc (Hons) in Geomatics at the Dublin Institute of Technology. The project began as a reaction to poor levels of student engagement and unsatisfactory grades, as well as the requirement to focus more on real-world type problems due to the implementation of a work-placement semester for third year students. Both pedagogical considerations (movement towards formative feedback, interactivity and group-based work) and the effect of technological drivers, such as the popularity of the internet in general and Web 2.0 tools in particular, led to the design of a two-part project where students engaged in group-work and individual research to explore remote sensing and close range photogrammetry concepts. The students found the new delivery and assessment to be generally successful with 78% recommending that the new format should be retained for future delivery. However, both the students and the lecturer involved envisage a number of changes, particularly in relation to group size and time management, for future deliveries

    On the Matching Accuracy of Rasterised Scanning Laser Altimeter Data

    ABSTRACT For certain applications irregularly distributed scanning laser altimeter data need to be rasterised -such as for use in GIS systems and for creating DEMs. Also, least squares matching on a raster grid can enable the measurement of planimetric and height shifts between overlapping strips of laser data. The shifts are a manifestation of errors in the laser altimeter, most of which are caused by the positioning elements of the system (GPS and/or INS). These translations form the input into a block adjustment to correct for relative and absolute errors. Here a discussion of the issues related to deriving a regular grid of 2.5D points from the original data is presented, with particular reference to the interpolation method, grid size, and quantisation level. An interpolation method based on a TIN of the original points with a grid size that relates as closely as possible to the point density at acquisition is found to give the best results. 8-bit quantisation is found to be sufficient for height differences of up to 100m

    Delivering Energy Savings for the Supply Chain Through Building Information Modelling as a Result of the Horizon 2020 Energy BIMcert Project

    The global buildings sector is now responsible for 40% of final energy consumption as well as accounting for 33% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. This has resulted in a growing urgency to address energy and emissions from buildings and construction, to meet restrictive 2020 targets as specified by the European Union (EU). To achieve these targets a number of funding initiatives have been put in place through Horizon 2020 with a focus on BIM, due to it having the potential to rapidly produce energy outputs that enable design teams to analyse and compare the most cost-effective, energy-efficient options. However, despite the recorded benefits that BIM can bring to the design, there is still a lack of understanding of how it can be used on site by the supply chain to impact energy savings directly. In order to address this industry-wide concern a Multi-International consortium, bid, won and then launched the Horizon 2020 Energy BIMcert project in March 2018 with the goal to educate all areas of the supply chain in the use of BIM, so as to achieve better energy efficiency during the design, construction and ongoing maintenance of an asset. An online platform will be launched in September 2019, which will deliver blended training that combines theory, practice, and eLearning that will enable workers to train more effectively. This paper will explore the initial stages of this project and will focus on how the findings from a survey and series of workshops conducted within the member states of the Energy BIMcert consortium has helped establish the training needs of the industry. These findings were cross-referenced with a state-of-the-art literature review on BIM pedagogy, which has resulted in the formation of the curriculum and learning outcomes for a number of BIM focused training units. Further to this, the paper will discuss how the delivery of the blended training and associated materials will affect current energy saving targets

    Harnessing Developments in Technology and Merging them with new Approaches to Teaching: a Practical Example of the Effective use of Wikis and Social Bookmarking Sites in 3rd Level Professional Education

    While innovations such as Problem-Based Learning and elearning have informed pedagogical practice on the Geomatics honours Bachelor of Science degree programme at the Department of Spatial Information Sciences, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Ireland, few attempts have been made to date to harness technological developments and merge them with new approaches to teaching. However, the recent conceptual change in authoring and usage of the World Wide Web from relatively static to fully interactive (Read-Write Web) provided an opportunity to embrace a change in technology as a means of modifying teaching practice to create a more student-centred environment. This paper describes a project currently running at the DIT, with 2nd year students on the aforementioned four-year honours degree programme in Geomatics, where the students are required to use Web 2.0 sites for social bookmarking (www.delicious.com) and wiki creation (www.pbwiki.com) to enable collaborative research and writing, in the context of a module on introductory level remote sensing. No prior knowledge of wikis or social bookmarking sites is expected and instruction in the usage of these tools is an integral part of the task. The students have been divided into small groups of four or five, given specific and independent tasks to accomplish, and given full autonomy in how elements of the task were subdivided. This particular arrangement has resulted in the emergence of a number of interesting organisational strategies within the groups, the practical details of which will be discussed during this paper. Through appropriate weighting of this task within the overall module students have been given the opportunity to become accustomed to the new form of teaching and learning, with its potential for confusion or misinterpretation caused by unfamiliarity, without needing to worry about potentially significant assessment penalties. The usage of online sites, which are accessible to the students only through unique logins or identifiers, has made individual assessment within groups significantly easier and more successful than was previously possible. Initial student feedback has been very positive, indicating that this method of learning is seen as interesting, challenging and effective, and that it is very fair in ensuring that non-contributing group members are not carried; a matter which is of significant concern to many hard-working students
