Who can I use in my role play?” A pilot-study evaluating the use of ChatGPT to build counseling students’ intake interviewing skills
A pilot-study evaluating the fidelity of ChatGPT in client simulations
Generative AI (genAI) is expanding in counselor education. This pilot study evaluated ChatGPT 4o\u27s voice mode for simulating client scenarios during 53-minute mock-intake sessions with master’s-level counseling students. Analyzing eight domains (authenticity, consistency, emotional expression, empathy, cultural dynamics, self-awareness, goal setting, and role play confusion), ChatGPT’s responses showed good to excellent fidelity when compared to a typical client. Limitations such as formulaic and idealized responses raised authenticity concerns. ChatGPT offers a scalable, cost-effective tool for pre-practicum training, with potential to enhance skill development across the curriculum. Educators are encouraged to integrate genAI thoughtfully, prioritizing ethical considerations and iterative prompt refinement
Initiation and Implementation of a Training Management Package for the East Timor Defence Force
This study reviewed the four specific literature areas; the Kings College Study; reviewing the cornerstone of East Timor's national strategy and security requirements, the Army Training System (ATS) and Army Needs Assessment model, the Office of Defence Force Development (ODFD), Force Development Plan (FOP) and the Logistic Contractor's (LC) Concept of Operations. These areas are linked and had an effect on the overall design of the study and its aim to develop an effective methodology for raising, training and sustaining the Logistic Support mechanisms for the East Timor Defence Force (ETDF). Further supplementation was gained from the following civilian sources; The Concept of Program in Adult Education, by A. Thomas, Needs and Needs Assessment in Continuing Professional Education, by B. Brennan, A State of the Art Methodology for Vocational Training by C. Campbell, The Politics of Responsibility: A Theory of Program Planning Practice of Adult Education, by R. Cervero and A. Wilson and the Development and Validation of an Instrument to Measure Adult Educators' Power and Influence: Tactics in Program Planning Practice, by Yang, B, Cervero, R.M, Valentine, T. and Benson, J. These literature areas revealed similarities within relevant civilian doctrine or areas of study and added balance to this dissertation. The author then deployed on three Tours of Duty (TOD) within East Timor, analyzing, interviewing and collating data. The TOD's fulfilled specific, whilst interrelated, activities; firstly a Reconnaissance TOD, ascertaining the depth and breadth of donor support required, secondly a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) TOD ascertaining the specific trade skill sets required to fulfill donor nation obligations, and lastly, a U.N. TOD with the U.N. Transitional Authority in East Timor (UNTAET) as the Logistic Advisor (LA) within the Office of Defence Force Development (ODFD), developing, initiating and instigating the Logistic Support mechanisms. Three hypotheses were investigated within this dissertation; Hypothesis One, the ETDF does not possess the corporate knowledge or personnel skill-sets required to undertake logistic management and delivery. Hypothesis Two, the ETDF has operated for twenty-five years as a guerilla army and has no formal awareness of the requirements, strategically, tactically, logistically or financially of how to operate as an conventional armed force. Hypothesis Three, the ETDF has no formal training infrastructure and has limited numeracy and literacy skillsets amongst its soldiers. A qualitative, experimental approach involving six case studies was utilized
Between dwelling and rail: seeking mutual benefit in transit oriented development and railway station expansion in the peri-urban area
A new approach is needed for redeveloping peri-urban railway stations in the Netherlands, like Amsterdam Lelylaan,to solve a set of pressing issues in their specific context: the monocentric character of many of our cities, the poor quality of public space around peripheral railway stations, and the disconnection between the local and the city scale. As our country is urbanising and the influence of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is growing, the smaller station turns into an instigator for new urban developments just outside of the ring highway in cities like Amsterdam, where 50.000 new dwellings will be realised by the year 2030, in existing built environments. In the peri-urban sphere, at the urban fringe, stacked apartments next to station areas are offering the density that lets many more inhabitants benefit from living in the city, through the infrastructure network: living somewhere, travelling and working somewhere else, connected on a city scale. But at the moment, these peri-urban railway stations are small and outdated, and often unattractive. Spoorbouwmeester Eric Luiten (Spoorbouwmeester, 2018) points out how changes in the transit network through the years have especially impacted smaller railway stations in peripheral areas: gradually, increased efficiency and technology have resulted in ticket offices atthese stations going vacant. No more amenities are needed today at these stations than a ticket machine and a platform. These stations show that they have no social significance or added qualities, locally, which in turn reflects onto the quality of their surrounding public space. The station areas were designed only as a necessity. The perceived issue is that the transit oriented city diminishes local values and qualities and replaces them with infrastructure, nodes and efficiency on a non-local scale. At this moment when new urban developments focus on public transport nodes, the railway station is in the middle of this change as something that is both part of the network and part of the local built environment.Today, contrasting developments are taking place: we are designing our cities with TOD focusing on the efficiency of the connected city, but at the same time aim to enhance the quality of local public space around station buildings and peripheral neighborhoods. We are building mixed-use buildings that are extremely well connected to amenities elsewhere in the city while also offering as much as their inhabitants need inside or near the building itself. Architects and urban planners as well as Bureau Spoorbouwmeester are looking to redevelop railway stations together with their environments as an integral master plan. This integral approach was used for the first time with the NSP program for the six largest railway stations in the Netherlands. As a result of this successful program, the interweaving of station and urban plan has become a standard in the vision of Bureau Spoorbouwmeester and the appointment of a Landscape Architect as their director ensures this new policy. With this duality of city network and local qualities, a great challenge is taking shape for the peri-urban railway station. On one hand, there is the realisation that we need to integrate the station into its local environment to enhance the quality of the surrounding public space and liveability of the neighborhood which in many cases of post-war neighborhoods is considered an issue. On the other hand these stations and new urban developments are advertising connectivity and mobility within the city network as the new way of living, a diversification of life through the possibilities of the transit oriented city and the sharing of spaces that it offers. The station area now has these two very different perspectives, but the next step should be to study these two perspectives alongside eachother, and to start blurring them: the station as the perfect mediator, offering a place that is connected to city life and at the same time extends this city life and its livelyhood into the local public sphere.City of the Futur

The Rhetoric of Sensibility: Argument, Sentiment, and Slavery in the Late Eighteenth Century.
PhDThis dissertation argues that by adapting the style and techniques of
sentimental novels, poetry, and drama to persuasive writing a significant
number of late-eighteenth century political writers were able to develop a
distinct and recognisable rhetoric of sensibility. It develops this argument by
examining eighteenth-century views on the use and purpose of rhetoric, and by
looking at writing in one of the most wide-ranging debates of the lateeighteenth
century, the debate over abolition of the slave trade. Chapter One
looks at traditional ('neo-classical') rhetoric and contrasts this with some of the
many varieties of the eighteenth-century 'new rhetoric'. Chapter Two looks at
particular rhetorical strategies employed during the sentimental period and
identifies the main tropes of the rhetoric of sensibility. Chapter Three examines
the relationship between slavery and literary sentimentalism, looking at the way
in which imaginative writers used sentimental rhetoric to advance the idea of
anti-slavery. It also considers the extent to which abolitionist poems, plays,
and novels themselves contributed to the development of a sentimental
rhetoric. Chapter Four examines the use of sentimental rhetoric in nonfictional
slavery-related tracts and pamphlets. It explores the ways in which
the sentimental rhetorical strategies outlined in Chapter Two were adopted by
both pro and anti-slavery writers of the 1780s. Chapter Five discusses how
William Wilberforce, the main parliamentary advocate for abolition, used
sentimental rhetoric in his early parliamentary speeches. The conclusion
examines anti-slavery writing after the collapse of the first abolition campaign
in 1792. In particular, it examines the use of sentimental rhetoric in responses
to the revolutions in France and Haiti and suggests that after this date
sentimental rhetoric, though never entirely disappearing, was progressively
supplanted by other forms of rhetoric
Representations of Voodoo : the history and influence of Haitian Vodou within the cultural productions of Britain and America since 1850
This thesis is the first major investigation into the representations of Vodou
within the cultural productions of Britain and America. It also opens up
opportunities for further research to be undertaken in the representations of
Vodou, Haiti and the culture and religions of other Caribbean countries.
This thesis explores the representations of 'Voodoo,' the widely accepted and
recognised term for the re-imagined religion, in Britain and America since 1850.
The history of the Caribbean and Haiti is examined before considering the
influence that the religion of Haitian Vodou has had on cultural production.
Through a historical perspective the thesis will consider the evolution of Vodou
during the horrors of slavery. The historiographic representations form the basis
of the productions and are explored to contextualise Vodou in the British and
American imagination. All genres of literature are examined, from the first
mention of Vodou in the eighteenth century through to the present day. This is
followed by an examination of the cultural reproductions of Vodou in film,
animation, theatre and television to explore the diversity of the representations.
The wider societal influences are considered throughout this work to
contextualise the productions of 'Voodoo'.
This thesis argues that the cultural reproductions of Vodou since 1850 have not
changed greatly, despite various efforts to redress the misrepresentations, they
remain rooted in colonialism. It will argue that many of the cultural productions
are reliant on previous representations. They do not in the majority introduce
authenticity, instead opting for the more sensational approach. Many of the
representations will be shown to be derogatory to the religion, culture and people
of Haiti and the diaspora. This is despite Vodou as a religion having survived,
gained strength and continuing to thrive in the twenty-first century
Authors', Institutions' and Countries' rankings in regional and urban science : an analysis for nine top international journals from 1991 to 2000
This paper examines the most productive authors, institutions and countries in regional and urban science from 1991 to 2000 using information on published articles (and pages) from a sample of widely recognized journals in this field: ARS, JUE, JRS, IJURR, IRSR, PRS, RSUE, RS and US. We also consider the relation between the country of the institution named in articles and the country in which the journal is published, in order to know if there are a home publication bias in regional and urban science. Analysis was made for the whole decade and by subperiods, this allowed us to make a more dynamic interpretation of the results- El siguiente artículo examina los autores, instituciones y paises más productivos en la ciencia regional y urbana desde 1991 hasta 2000 usando información sobre artículos publicados de una muestra de revistas ampliamente reconocida en este campo: ARS, JUE, JRS, IJURR, IRSR, PRS, RSUE, RS y US. También se analiza la relación existente entre el país de la institución en que el autor desarrolla su investigación y el país de edición de las revistas donde se publican los trabajos con el objetivo de analizar si existe ¿sesgo doméstico¿.
