Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

UAV GPS-Denied Navigation via Coastal Navigation Motion Planning
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are flying robots capable of inspecting and collecting data without risking human safety. Most UAVs require a Global Positioning Service (GPS) sensor to determine where they are in the environment (localize themselves). GPS can be disrupted by extreme weather, buildings, or signal jamming, creating GPS-denied environments. Without reliable localization, UAVs risk navigation errors or crashing. Researchers developed a Coastal Navigation technique allowing UAV localization without GPS by detecting landmarks while moving towards a location. In this work, we introduce a Coastal Navigation-based motion planning algorithm where the UAV creates an optimal path to a location based on balancing minimizing the trajectory distance and minimizing location uncertainty. We evaluate our work with two experiments simulating a UAV mission in urban and island environments, where the UAV follows multiple paths and records its distance from the goal and localization uncertainty at each time step. Each path is defined by a parameter k, which balances minimizing travel distance and minimizing uncertainty. Our results show that a k value of 0.5 provides an effective trade-off between accurate localization and efficient routing, while other values prioritize one objective over the other. Localizing an RF Transmitter using Received Signal Strength
This poster details work conducted by student researchers in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Robotic Department's Swarm Control Lab. Localization of RF transmitters has been attempted using various means and computational algorithms to achieve the most accurate estimates of a source's location in noisy systems. We examined a method proposed by F. Koo and J. Cha to test these algorithms using the received signal strength at multiple receiver locations. The theory behind Koo and Cha's method was found to be compatible with our desired hardware and application in aquatic sensory drift nodes. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Marine Data-Ferrying Using Swarms of Autonomous Underwater Robots to Network Sensor Modules with a Surface Ship
The emerging field of Ocean Big Data (OBD) aims to create efficient methods of collecting marine data used for military, environmental research, oil & gas, and fishing industries. Traditionally, sensors must be deployed, retrieved and then have their data collected. With the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), sensor packets can be placed, recharged and have data collected without being retrieved each time. Our team has modified an OpenROV (an open source AUV) to deploy, retrieve, recharge and collect seismic data from sensor packets. While AUVs are often used for surveying tasks, tasks that require an underwater robot to interact with its environment directly are still manually operated. Sensor Implementation in Autonomous Narrative-Capturing Robot
This research poster showcases the progress made in developing and testing sensor software and hardware for use in a robot capable of producing a cohesive story from visual and other sensory input. An algorithm capable of instructing a robot to record and thread events into a structured narrative is a novel concept that may provide revolutionary insights into automation. To provide the algorithm with useful information, working sensors must collect data relevant to the desired narrative. The robot operates using the body of an RC car and a Raspberry Pi computer for a brain. Hardware units compatible with the robot’s computer were tested to develop software intended to realize the robot’s operation. A prototype emergency brake program was developed using an ultrasonic sonar distance sensor and micro servo motor. Code for the robot’s inertial measurement unit and GPS operations were also improved. Extensive field testing with the robot’s GPS indicated promising accuracy and precision from the unit.
