Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
An Implementation of Real-Time Traffic Signs and Road Objects Detection Based on Mobile GPU Platforms
Sakarya University Scientific Research Foundation [2021-7-24-20]This work was supported by Sakarya University Scientific Research Foundation (Project No.: 2021-7-24-20).Thanks to the rapid development of computer vision and deep learning technologies, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have recently become widespread. These systems aim to increase driving safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents. Modern cars usually have ADAS systems integrated into their electronics, but other vehicles do not have such an integrated system. This paper presents a portable and image-based ADAS system for real-time detection of traffic signs, vehicles, and pedestrians. To realize real-time detection, the developed system uses the YOLO v5 algorithm. This single-stage detector is very popular as it has high detection speed and accuracy. The model was trained on the Tesla P100 graphics processing unit (GPU) with nearly 2500 images and 8 hours using GTSRB and study-specific dataset to analyze the developed system. Then, the implementation metrics (F1 score, P, R, PR curves) were calculated to evaluate the training and testing performances of the model. In addition, the model was compared in low-power, high-performance embedded platforms and in a computer to measure the real-time performance. The comparison results for (Jetson Xavier AGX, Jetson Xavier Nx, Jetson Nano and Test PC) achieved a speed of (43.59, 23.17, 6.4 and 3.41) frames per second for real-time detection, respectively. Considering the excellent accuracy and high speed, this study will guide researchers in demonstrating the efficiency and suitability of real-time road object detection with YOLO v5 on mobile platforms
Real-time Recyclable Waste Detection Using YOLOv8 for Reverse Vending Machines
Increasing challenges in waste management necessitate optimizing the efficiency of recycling systems. Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) offer a promising solution by incentivizing recycling through user rewards. However, inaccurate waste detection methods hinder the effectiveness of RVMs. This study explores the potential of the YOLOv8 deep learning algorithm to enhance real-time waste classification accuracy in RVMs. We propose a YOLOv8-based framework for real-time detection of seven key recyclable materials. The model is trained on a combined dataset comprising the public TrashNet dataset and a study-specific dataset tailored to materials and variations encountered in RVMs. Performance evaluation metrics include F1-score, precision, recall, and PR curves. Results demonstrate the superior performance of the YOLOv8-based approach compared to other popular deep learning algorithms, including YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv9. The YOLOv8 model achieves an accuracy rate of over 97%, significantly outperforming other algorithms. This improvement translates into enhanced recycling efficiency and reduced misclassification errors in RVMs. This research contributes to the development of more sustainable waste management systems by improving the efficiency and accuracy of RVMs. The YOLOv8-based framework presents a promising solution for real-time waste detection in RVMs, paving the way for more effective recycling practices and reduced environmental impact
MongoDB Based Real-Time Monitoring Heart Rate Using Websocket For Remote Healthcare
With the gradual development of Industry 4.0, the internet of things (IoT) concept has become an even more current and fundamental study topic. Consisting of devices and objects with communication capability, IoT is a network that uses internet infrastructure, especially for data collection, display, decision-making, control, and optimization of processes. Recently, patient tracking systems have become even more critical with Covid19 and have diversified in health for IoT topics such as biomedical device tracking and disease diagnosis. Within the scope of this study, a prototype of a patient tracking system was developed over the sensor in order to contribute to the biomedical field. We aimed to observe real-time heart rates using WebSockets to demonstrate its use in the medical field via the web application. Monitoring the heart rate using a WebSocket can help doctors make faster and better diagnoses. The current technology study instantly collected the patient's heart rhythm with the pulse sensor. The pulse data collected in real time was then transferred to a web platform with the NodeMCU ESP 8266 board. With this platform, the patient was monitoring in real-time. With the opportunities provided by the study, the doctor implemented an application monitors the instantaneous pulse of the patients
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
