    This Introduction contextualizes the research presented in Sexology and Translation in relation to recent debates about the shape and methods of the history of sexuality. In so doing it also addresses head on some of the challenges that occur when distinct linguistic, disciplinary, and cultural contexts are brought into critical dialogue. The collection extends understanding of how the intersections between national and transnational contexts as well as the relationship between science and culture and discourse and experience, shaped modern sexuality. It substantively and theoretically reshapes existing scholarship on the histories of sexuality and modernity by demonstrating that the modern concept of “sexuality” was forged across the modern world at the intersections between science and culture via an intricate, and sometimes surprising, web of influences, disavowals and allegiances that turned erotic desires, sexual acts, intimate relationship and queer bodies into the contested markers of modernity

    Book synopsis: This three-volume collection focuses on writings by and about cross-dressing women from the early nineteenth century up until the beginning of World War II. In so doing, it provides a new perspective on one of the most decisive periods in the history of feminism. The anthology brings together for the first time key texts from the sexological and the literary realms, as well as newspaper articles, letters and photographs, which document the phenomenon of cross-dressing women in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British culture. The collection also includes translations from European texts that impacted on British understandings of cross-dressing during this time. A fascinating work, each of the volumes is introduced separately with a critical essay, and is divided thematically to include sections devoted to theories, fictions and fictionalisations, and lives. Together, these volumes make available important source material for the history of feminism

    Suicidal subjects: translation and the emotional foundations of Magnus Hirschfeld’s sexology

    Attention to translation between languages can offer glimpses at the elusive evidence of past emotions and the circumstance in which they are formed. This uses a translation framework to examines the writings on homosexual death and suicide by the Jewish sexologist and homosexual rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935). It is prompted by the realization that while we know of many queer lives which have ended tragically as a result of legal persecution, violent attack or the inability to cope with heteronormative social and emotional pressures, we know surprisingly little about the traumatic impact of these deaths on the lives of their contemporaries and the shaping of modern queer culture more broadly. By paying attention to Hirschfeld’s writings in German and English on homosexual suicide, its causes and its reception, this chapter shows that lesbian and homosexual suffering caused emotional shockwaves that rippled far across the geopolitical boundaries of the modern world

    Introduction: transnational lesbian cultures

    This Introduction sets out the aims and scope of this special journal issue. The issue examines the transnational shape and shaping of lesbian lives and cultures in and across China, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It uses the expression “transnational lesbian cultures” to suggest that despite sometimes radically different sociopolitical and cultural contexts, the lived experiences of same-sex desire and their emotional attachments create particular affinities between women who love women, affinities that reach across the distinct cultural and social contexts that shape them. The articles brought together explore lesbian subcultures, film, graphic novels, music, and online intimacies. They show that as a cultural and political signifier and as an analytical tool, lesbian troubles and complicates contemporary sexual politics, not least by revealing some of the gendered structures that shape debates about sexuality in a range of critical, cultural and political contexts. While the individual pieces cover a wide range of issues and concerns—which are often highly specific to the historical, cultural, and political contexts they discuss—together they tell a story about contemporary transnational lesbian culture: one that is marked by intricate links between norms and their effects and shaped by the efforts to resist denial, discrimination, and sometimes even active persecution

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
