Fil: Batista, Pablo Rodrigo. Treatment of Canine Pyometra With the Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Antagonist Acyline: A Case Series
To describe the effect of the third-generation gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist acyline in the treatment of 4 diestrous bitches with the cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex. The 4 bitches were treated with 330. μg/kg of subcutaneous acyline on day 0 and antibiotics, and followed up for 2 weeks. One closed-cervix case showed cervical dilatation 36 hours after treatment, and all the 4 animals showed resolution of clinical signs starting on day 3 posttreatment. Ultrasonographic uterine diameters and luminal contents decreased in the bitches having high progesterone serum concentrations before treatment but not in those with low levels. Serum progesterone importantly decreased from high to basal concentrations in the 3 "ultrasonographically cured" animals. No local or systemic side effects related to the treatment were observed. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist acyline may have a promising place for the medical treatment of cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex in dogs.Fil: Batista, Pablo Rodrigo.
A systematic review of reproductive physiology of jaguars (Panthera onca)
The jaguar (Panthera onca), the largest felid in the Americas, has been classified by IUCN as „near-threatened‟. The purpose of this review was to gather the current knowledge on jaguar reproduction. Information from over forty-five sources has been selected. Jaguars have been classified as polyestrous with generally an inducedovulation, with a moderate incidence of spontaneity. Estrus, estrous cycle and pseudopregnancy lengths varied from 4 to 17, and 22 to 63, and 14 to 67 days, respectively. Ejaculate volume is around 3.9 ml and the spermatogenic cycle takes 57.7 ± 0.07 days. In spite of its low gonadosomatic index, the whole spermatogenic process in jaguars is more efficient than that of the domestic cat. Although minor seasonal variation in most reproductive traits has been found at the studied latitudes, local rains seemed to have an effect. Gestation takes from 91 to 111 days. Females queen one to four immature cubs. As evidenced by the wide range reported for most reproductive parameters further work is still necessary to achieve fundamental knowledge that could facilitate breeding, management and conservation activities.Fil: Ortiz, Gala. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Ultrasonographic quantification of the endometrium echogenicity and heterogeneity in canine physiological and pathological conditions using computer-assisted analysis
The aims of this study were: To ultrasonographically describe and compare endometrial echogenicity and heterogeneity using digital analysis in normal and bitches suffering from pyometra, cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and endometritis; and to evaluate the effect of clinical, bacteriological and histopathological uterine parameters on endometrial echogenicity and heterogeneity. Forty-one post pubertal intact bitches were included. According to clinical, ultrasonographic, anatomopathological and histopathological uterine evaluation, the animals wereclassified as: Pyometra (PYO; n=6); CEH (n=8); Endometritis (END; n=13); Normal group (NG;n=14). Endometrial images were analyzed with ImageJ software to obtain echogenicity andheterogeneity, represented as the mean gray value (MGV) and standard deviation of gray (SDG),respectively. The effect of the group, clinical, bacteriological, ultrasonographic and histologicalvariables on MGV and SDG were analyzed by a generalized linear model. PYO exhibited higherMGV (P0.1). Body weight decreased MGV (P<0.01), whileincreasing degrees of inflammatory reaction (P<0.01), edema (P<0.01), hemorrhages (P<0.01)and vascular congestion (P<0.01) were associated with higher MGV. Inflammatory reaction(P<0.01) and ulceration (P<0.01) increased SDG. Ultrasonographic images evaluated usingcomputer assisted image analysis were useful to differentiate pyometra from other uterine conditions in dogs. However, this technique could not differentiate among CEH, END and NG. Uterineechogenicity and echotexture, which clearly represent the different histopathological patterns, contribute to the diagnosis of the definite diagnosis of some canine uterine diseases.Fil: Arioni, Sol. Uterine blood flow evaluation in bitches suffering from cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and CEH-pyometra complex
Doppler ultrasound is a useful diagnosis tool to evaluate uterine blood flow in different canine reproductive states. The aim of this study was to describe and compare uterine blood flow in bitches suffering from cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and CEH-pyometra complex. Ninety diestrous bitches were clinically, hematologically and ultrasonographically classified into 4 groups: 1) Clinical signs, leukocitocis, CEH and uterine luminal contents (CEH-P, n=31); 2) Asymptomatic bitches with CEH and uterine contents (CEH-C, n=15); 3) Asymptomatic bitches with CEH without uterine contents (CEH, n=16); and 4) Normal diestrus bitches (ND, n=28). The widest cross-sectional diameter (D) and uterine wall thickness (W) of uterine horns were measured using two-dimensional ultrasound. Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) of uterine arteries were measured by Doppler ultrasound in all the bitches. Peak systolic velocity and EDV were higher in CEH-P than in CEH-C, CEH and ND (P 0.1). Conversely, RI showed lower values in CEH-P than in the other three groups (P 0.1). When all the bitches were considered, correlation between RI and D was r=-0.69 (P 0.1). It is concluded that the uterine artery blood flow velocity of bitches suffering from pyometra was higher, not only from normal bitches, but also from females with endometrial hyperplasia. Furthermore, endometrial hyperplasia, accompanied or not by luminal contents, had a higher blood flow velocity than normal uterus. Hemodynamic parameters appear as useful markers to differentiate uterine pathological conditions.Fil: Batista, Pablo Rodrigo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina.
