Eroded Land No. 1, 1957
Bates treats the middle ground in an unusually Cubist manner analyzing the farm buildings into angular planes and assembling them. In this bold work, he judiciously places the three primary colours in foreground, distant hills and sky contrasting them with more neutral colours for best optical effect. A black and white source photo for this artwork exists in the Maxwell Bates fonds, Special Collections, University of Calgary Library.
This work is also known as Eroded Land Near Drumheller. It is Bates's first Drumheller landscape. Bates “returned with a difference” in Eroded Land (1962) owned by the Art Gallery of Alberta.
Hugh Buchanan bought this work from Canadian Art Galleries that had purchased it from Bates in June 1957
