    Replication data for: Volume kinetics of crystalloid and colloid solutions administered to healthy anesthetized cats

    The dataset contains physiological vital sign and biochemical data collected from awake and anesthetized cats who were given a fluid bolus (either 20 mL/kg of a balanced isotonic crystalloid solution (PLA) or 5 mL/kg of 6% tetrastarch 130/0.4 solution (T-HES) administered over 15 minutes. Plasma dilution was calculated as a surrogate for 'fluid' concentration in the plasma along with cumulative urine output as the primary input data to do volume kinetic modeling in Phoenix NLME software. The dataset contains 2 XLS spreadsheets that contain the formatted data for import into Phoenix- one for each fluid type, and 1 XLS spreadsheet that contains the combined datasets that was used for descriptive statistical analysis. Finally the dataset contains 2 PDF documents that are copies of the HISTORY of the Phoenix output that allows the user to uncover the settings and approach that was used to model the data and complete the Phoenix Volume Kinetic Analysis

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Examining potential impacts of Capacity for Care (C4C) as a strategy to manage shelter cat populations

    Capacity for Care (C4C) is a management strategy designed to address feline welfare issues in animal shelters and provides solutions for efficiently managing shelter populations. Managed shelter intake, as recommended by C4C, is an effective method to control shelter populations. The goal of this research was to determine the impact of waitlists and strategies to divert intake, on cats whose owners were seeking to relinquish them. To address these goals, one quantitative and one qualitative study were conducted. Findings suggest that managed intake resulted in 31% of cats being retained or rehomed without shelter assistance, but follow-up information about these outcomes was limited. Shelter workers perceived gaining support from staff, and understanding from the public, to be major challenges after implementing C4C. Further research is needed to understand potential impacts of C4C on the welfare of cats in the community who are waiting to be admitted to a shelter

    Assessment of Crystalloid and Colloid Volume Kinetics During Isoflurane Anesthesia in Cats

    Fluid therapy is constantly evolving with new information that challenges current clinical practice. Intravenous fluid therapy in the perioperative and critical care settings can help preserve effective circulating blood volume to maintain systemic tissue perfusion and adequate cellular oxygen delivery. However, inappropriate use of fluid therapy can also result in inadequate resuscitation leading to tissue hypoperfusion or excessive fluid administration leading to tissue edema. General anesthesia can have profound effects on cardiovascular stability and the ideal fluid prescription in the perioperative setting remains a topic of debate. Volume kinetic analysis is an innovative adaptation of traditional pharmacokinetic principles that allows IV fluids to be studied like pharmaceutical drugs, providing new information on their volume of distributions, elimination rates, and half-lives under various physiological conditions. This research project investigated the volume kinetics of a balanced crystalloid solution (20 mL/kg Plasma-Lyte A) and a colloid solution (5 mL/kg 6% tetrastarch 130/0.4) administered over 15 minutes on separate occasions in healthy cats under general anesthesia. Overall fluid elimination under anesthesia is markedly reduced for both fluid types, leading to prolonged elimination half-lives. Volume kinetic analysis suggests that a bolus of Plasma-Lyte A resulted in significant fluid retention and relatively short plasma expansion effects, whereas 6% tetrastarch achieved similar plasma expansion with more sustained effect. In addition, a novel non-invasive 3-dimensional bladder volume estimation method that utilizes bladder circumference tracings obtained from orthogonal bladder ultrasonographic images was assessed and validated for bladder volume estimation. This method may be used to obtain urinary excretion non-invasively for future volume kinetic studies. The agreement between bladder volume estimation using the novel 3-dimensional method was demonstrated against a previously published linear bladder dimension formula and actual measured bladder volumes.Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust2023-06-0

    Evaluation of Volume Kinetic Modelling and Analysis for the Assessment of Acute Fluid Shifts in Cats

    Fluid therapy is a rapidly evolving yet imprecise clinical practice based upon broad assumptions, species-to-species extrapolations, outdated experimental evidence, and individual preferences. Fluid therapy can cause significant harm through fluid overload which increases morbidity and mortality. With limited evidence to support our current fluid administration practices in cats, greater understanding of the volume kinetics (pharmacokinetics) of intravenous fluid and body water physiology in this species would provide valuable data to support safer effective fluid therapy practices. This research project explored the potential of volume kinetic modelling analysis as determined by hemoglobin dilution and estimated urine output in unveiling the distribution, elimination, plasma volume expansion, half-life, and comparative potency of three commonly prescribed intravenous fluids in healthy cats. The feasibility of a novel non-invasive 3-dimensional bladder volume estimation method utilizing bladder circumference tracings obtained from point-of-care bladder ultrasonographic images was also investigated. Approximately equipotent doses of blinded balanced crystalloid solution (Plasma-Lyte A, 20 mL/kg), hypertonic saline solution (5% sodium chloride, 3.3 mL/kg), and synthetic colloid solution (6% tetrastarch 130/0.4, 5 mL/kg) infused over 15 minutes on separate random occasions revealed similar peak plasma volume expansion. The half-life and potency of these solutions were consistent with reports from human and canine studies. Intriguingly, the distribution of all infusions from the central compartment was rapid while the elimination was slow in comparison to other species; suggesting that cats may have different physiological responses to intravenous fluid infusion, which may explain their susceptibility to fluid overload. Computer simulations of hypothetical fluid infusions to achieve and maintain plasma volume expansion at steady state revealed the need for substantial reduction in the infusion rate following initial fluid bolus. Lastly, non-invasive 3-dimensional bladder volume estimation was achieved and showed promising potential in terms of feasibility and agreement with a recently published feline geometric linear bladder dimension formula. Bladder circumference tracings were easy to perform, reliable, and reproducible among individuals with limited point-of-care ultrasonography experience and remained robust when dealing with images of various diagnostic qualities.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Evaluation of the effects of general anesthesia on the ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter of dogs

    The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of anesthesia on the ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter of dogs. Dogs without signs of elevated intracranial pressure, glaucoma or optic nerve disease were anesthetized and optic nerve sheath diameter was recorded at three time points: following pre-medication, after induction, and prior to discontinuing isoflurane. Mixed model analysis was used investigate the effects of time, anesthetic parameters and patient characteristics on sheath diameters. Fourteen dogs were enrolled. A positive linear relationship was detected between body weight and optic nerve sheath diameter (P < 0.01). Optic nerve sheath diameter increased linearly following induction (P < 0.01), and it decreased when anesthetic duration exceeded 120 minutes (P = 0.01). No other patient or anesthetic parameter affected optic nerve sheath diameter. Optic nerve sheath diameter is affected by body weight and anesthesia, both of which should be considered when serial monitoring is performed

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
