On the Adoption of Genetically Modified Seeds in Developing Countries and the Optimal Types of Government Intervention

    No full text
Given the proprietary nature of most genetically modified (GM) seed technologies, the question arises as to how farmers in developing countries can gain proper access. Based on empirical observations, a theoretical model is developed, focusing on farmers' adoption decisions in response to pricing strategies of a foreign monopolist and a domestic supplier of conventional seeds. Government interventions, such as seed subsidies, encouragement of R&D, and intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement, and their effects on GM coverage and national welfare are analyzed. The possibility of the government obtaining a license to distribute GM seeds domestically through a transfer to the monopolist is also considered. Copyright 2007, Oxford University Press.

46 pagesTo examine the effect of Foreign Direct Investment on domestics firms' productivity, The thesis is constructed by two chapters: in the first chapter, the author examines whether firms' productivity is the determinant that attracts the foreign capital. The result shows that FDI's positive effects on TFP may simply reflect the endogeneity that the FDI invests in more productive firms. Firms with a mature export network. Based on the conclusion in the first chapter, the author estimates the pure FDI effects on firms' productivity with a multi- periods DID method. By comparing the originally domestically-invested, then Foreign- or Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan- invested enterprises with consistently domestically-invested enterprises, the result shows that state- invested firms' productivity benefit more from FDI, particularly, the foreign investment. FDI positive effects for global integration and increases liquidity for private-invested firms

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

THE EFFECT OF EBAY JUMP BIDDING ON FINAL PRICES

40 pagesIn this thesis, I researched the effect of eBay jump bidding on final prices based on Bodoh-Creed et al.’s (2021) dataset. I used multiple regression models to examine the effect. I found that jump bidding on eBay may have a significantly positive effect on the final prices, but the effect became insignificant after using an instrumental variable model.2027-06-1

43 pagesSupplemental file(s) description: Mexico State shape file, Mexico state shape file, Processed dataset, Word version thesis, Do file 6, Do file 5, Do file 4, Do file 3, Do file 2, Do file 1.This study examines how formal sector employment affects the worker’s job search methods in Mexico. It studies how each worker and workplace characteristic is associated with the probability of using each job search method as opposed to private/public agencies using a multinomial logit model. It also examines a differential effect of using friends and family search in different sizes of town: the bigger the size of town, the more rewarding is friends and family search in terms of real monthly wages, and the possibility that the position offers any work-related benefits. In addition, it finds that using formal job search methods such as friends/family search, advertisement, internet search is associated with a slightly larger probability of that position being in the formal sector for males than females, while using direct approach is associated with a significantly larger probability of that position being in the formal sector for females than males. Importantly, it argues that the return to searching through friends and family is bigger in terms of real monthly income in towns of smaller sizes, even though larger towns are associated with higher real monthly income

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
