Oral History Interview with Robert Bass, May 22, 2008
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert G. Bass. Bass was born in Walnut, Illinois on 18 November 1922. He was drafted into the Army in February 1943. After three months of basic and combat military police training at Fort Riley, Kansas, Bass was accepted in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Indiana. The program was disbanded in early 1944 and Bass was sent first to an armored infantry unit and then to the 243rd Combat Engineers, training at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. On 22 October 1944 the unit sailed to Europe. After a brief stay in England, they crossed the English Channel to La Havre. In December, they were in Belgium in the area where the Battle of the Bulge was being fought. In early 1945 they were on the move to Germany attached to the 1107th Engineering Group, doing road work, clearing mines and building bridges in support of the 87th Infantry. They built a pontoon bridge across the Rhine, crossed, and continued east to Schmolln. They were there when Germany surrendered. Bass and the unit were sent to Erfurt to process German prisoners of war. Erfurt being in the Russian Zone, they relocated to Bavaria. There they supervised public works projects being done with POW labor and trained for an eventual move to the Pacific Theater. After the Japanese surrender, Bass’s return to the States was delayed by lack of transportation. He finally departed Europe on 22 December 1945
Sea bass, groupers and snappers
Studies on sea bass (Lates calcarifer) broodstock were directed at techniques to maximize egg production. Now known are the: optimum luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) dose range to induce spawning, optimum egg size responsive to LHRHa induction, appropriate time for induction, proper storage conditions for LHRHa, and induction of spermiation in males. Gonadal maturation and spawning are successfully induced by LHRHa and/or 17 alphamethyltestosterone. An experiment on photoperiodic induction of sexual maturation is being conducted to produce seed year round. Increased information on larval morphology and physiology of sea bass led to improvements in feeding strategies and transport techniques. Studies on nutrient requirements and practical diets are currently being undertaken for different stages/sizes of sea bass. An economic assessment found an integrated sea bass production system viable.
Studies on groupers (Epinephelus spp.) have been geared towards broodstock development including induction of sex inversion by hormonal control, intraspecific interaction, and sex control using synthetic anabolic steroids. Spontaneous maturation and successive spawnings of captive Epinephelus suillus were achieved in 1990. Larval rearing techniques used for other marine fish species were tried but with limited success. Culture techniques in ponds and floating cages using SEAFDEC-formulated diets or commercial pellets are being developed.
Studies on snappers (Lutjanus spp.) have been started with the identification of species common in Panay Island

Charlotta Bass receives a book from author Albert E. Kahn, August 1950, Los Angeles
Photograph of Charlotta Bass, right, with author Albert E. Kahn. The photo was taken at the Los Angeles airport before Bass left on a trip to Europe. Bass holds an autographed copy of Kahn's latest book, "High Treason." In 1939, Kahn became Executive Secretary of the American Council Against Nazi Propaganda and exposed Nazi atrocities in Europe. He later edited "The Hour," a newsletter that uncovered German and Japanese conspiratorial activities in the Americans during World War II. This photograph appeared in the California Eagle
