Affective Virtual Reality: How to Design Artificial Experiences Impacting Human Emotions
Computer graphics is—in many cases—about visualizing what you cannot see.
However, virtual reality (VR), from its beginnings, aimed at stimulating all human
senses: not just the visual channel. Moreover, this set of multisensory stimuli allows
users to feel present and able to interact with the virtual environment. In this way,
VR aims to deliver experiences that are comparable to real-life ones in their level of
detail and stimulation, intensity, and impact. Hence, VR is not only a means to see,
but also to feel differently. With the spreading of VR technologies, there is a growing
interest in using VR to evoke emotions, including positive and negative ones. This
article discusses the current possibilities and the authors’ experience collected in
the field in trying to elicit emotions through VR. It explores how different design
aspects and features can be used, describing their contributions and benefits in the
development of affective VR experiences. This work aims at raising awareness of
the necessity to consider and explore the full design space that VR technology
provides in comparison to traditional media. Additionally, it provides possible
tracks of VR affective applications, illustrating how they could impact our emotions
and improve our life, and providing guidelines for their development
Structural Analysis and Visualization of Ecosystems: A Study of Mobile Device Platforms
Platforms enable and drive the creation of new products and services; they also shape and transform industries in fundamental ways. Consequently, platforms have become a core feature of many emerging business models. The success of a platform is inextricably linked to its network, or ecosystem, of enablers and complementors. Drawing on models and theories of complex systems, innovation, and network analysis, this study analyzes the evolving structure of interfirm relations in the mobile device platform ecosystem. This domain is of particular interest due to the emergence of promising new platforms and competition for platform leadership between open and closed business models. The visual approach presented in this study provides insights to the complexity of interfirm relations in the mobile device platform ecosystem, determines a platform’s competitive position, and identifies structural configurations that characterize various types of business strategies. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed
Visualization of Interfirm Relations in a Converging Mobile Ecosystem
The mobile ecosystem is characterized by a large and complex network of companies interacting with each other, directly and indirectly, to provide a broad array of mobile products and services to end-customers. With the convergence of enabling technologies, the complexity of the mobile ecosystem is increasing multifold as new actors are emerging, new relations are formed, and the traditional distribution of power is shifted. Drawing on theories of network science, complex systems, interfirm relationships, and the creative art and science of visualization, this paper identifies key players and maps the complex structure and dynamics of nearly 7000 global companies and over 18,000 relationships in the converging mobile ecosystem. Our approach enables decision makers to (i) visually explore the complexity of interfirm relations in the mobile ecosystem, (ii) discover the relation between current and emerging segments, (iii) determine the impact of convergence on ecosystem structure, (iv) understand a firm\u27s competitive position, and (v) identify interfirm relation patterns that may influence their choice of innovation strategy or business models
Transforming Enterprises through Mobile Applications: A Multi-Phase Framework
Mobile applications have become an important strategic imperative to many leading enterprises. While the potential value and impact of enterprise mobility is understood, only little is known about the transformational capabilities of mobile applications. This research develops a conceptual multi-phase framework of mobile transformations by integrating the emerging literature on mobile business and enterprise transformation with best practice approaches employed in industry. The framework provides a basis for future mobile enterprise oriented studies, enhances our understanding of mobile application opportunities, and facilitates the development of appropriate mobility strategies
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Control of platform-based service marketplaces
Successful platform-based service marketplaces such as Apple's App Store have revolutionized the way of IT service delivery. The ecosystem of platform-based service marketplaces is characterized by an intense dynamic that requires extensive control from their providers. By using a theory-based empirical analysis based on 252 control changes of two app stores in the smartphone industry, a dynamic control theory for platform-based service marketplaces is developed. Finally, the validity of selected findings for a platform-based service marketplace in the automotive industry is explored
The digital platform: a research agenda
As digital platforms are transforming almost every industry today, they are slowly finding their way into the mainstream information systems (ISs) literature. Digital platforms are a challenging research object because of their distributed nature and intertwinement with institutions, markets and technologies. New research challenges arise as a result of the exponentially growing scale of platform innovation, the increasing complexity of platform architectures and the spread of digital platforms to many different industries. This paper develops a research agenda for digital platforms research in IS. We recommend researchers seek to (1) advance conceptual clarity by providing clear definitions that specify the unit of analysis, degree of digitality and the sociotechnical nature of digital platforms; (2) define the proper scoping of digital platform concepts by studying platforms on different architectural levels and in different industry settings; and (3) advance methodological rigour by employing embedded case studies, longitudinal studies, design research, data-driven modelling and visualisation techniques. Considering current developments in the business domain, we suggest six questions for further research: (1) Are platforms here to stay? (2) How should platforms be designed? (3) How do digital platforms transform industries? (4) How can data-driven approaches inform digital platforms research? (5) How should researchers develop theory for digital platforms? and (6) How do digital platforms affect everyday life?Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Information and Communication Technolog
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
