Open Materials Discourse: Enhancement of Recall within Technology-Mediated Teams Through the Use of Online Visual Artifacts
Get PDFThis paper provides the materials used to conduct the Basoglu, Fuller, and Valacich (2012) study of individuals’ recall of information within technology-mediated teams (i.e., virtual teams). In the Basoglu et al. (2012) study, three input factors—visual artifacts (i.e., a computer-generated image of each team member), team size, and work interruptions—were manipulated to assess their influence on a person’s ability to recall important characteristics of their virtual team members. In the current paper, we provide step-by-step instructions for the experimental design, procedures, consent form, and the questionnaire administered by Basoglu et al. (2012). Our objectives are to provide researchers with the necessary materials to replicate the Basoglu et al. (2012) study and use its methodological techniques to guide their own research
Analysis Of The Performance Of The Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking In Building Integrated Photovoltaic Systems
No full textBuilding-integrated/applied photovoltaic (PV) systems have been widespread recently in terms of electrical energy generation in buildings. These systems are applications with much lower power than land type large-scale systems, addressing the area/building where they are installed rather than centralized production. In this framework, maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) approaches at module level and sub-module level, balcony railing, Carport or solar tile etc. will be investigated in terms of building integrated PV systems (BIPV). Solar panels act as a building material, insulation material and energy generator in BIPV applications. In building-applied (BAPV) examples, the solar panel is mounted on the building. However, there is no difference between BIPV and BAPV in terms of electrical model. A unique method will be developed for MPPT at module level and sub-module level for such applications. Depending on the power processing strategy in the optimizer power stage, amplifier, synchronous reducer or bidirectional differential power processing topologies will be examined and the most suitable power converter for the module and sub-module level will be determined. Technically, comparisons of the performances of MPPT strategies were made in the MATLAB/Simulink program at the central, module level or sub-module level, and it was shown that the power that can be obtained from the PV module or sub-module increases with the MPPT at the module and sub-module level. © 2023 IEEE.Alewijnse DMT Marine Equipment Eekels Libert
War related sexual violence and it's medical and psychological consequences as seen in Kitgum, Northern Uganda: A cross-sectional study.
Get PDFBACKGROUND: Despite the recent adoption of the UN resolution 1820 (2008) which calls for the cessation of war related sexual violence against civilians in conflict zones, Africa continues to see some of the worst cases of war related sexual violence including the mass sexual abuse of entire rural communities particularly in the Great Lakes region. In addition to calling for a complete halt to this abuse, there is a need for the systematic study of the reproductive, surgical and psychological effects of war related sexual violence in the African socio-cultural setting.This paper examines the specific long term health consequences of war related sexual violence among rural women living in two internally displaced person's camps in Kitgum district in war affected Northern Uganda who accessed the services of an Isis-Women's International Cross Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE) medical intervention. METHODS: The study employed a purposive cross-sectional study design where 813 respondents were subjected to a structured interview as part of a screening procedure for an emergency medical intervention to identify respondents who required psychological, gynaecological and surgical treatment. RESULTS: Over a quarter (28.6%) of the women (n = 573) reported having suffered at least one form of war related sexual violence. About three quarters of the respondents had 'at least one gynaecological complaint' (72.4%) and 'at least one surgical complaint' (75.6%), while 69.4% had significant psychological distress scores (scores greater than or equal to 6 on the WHO SRQ-20). The factors that were significantly associated with war related sexual violence were the age group of less than or equal to 44 years, being Catholic, having suffered other war related physical trauma, and having 'at least one gynaecological complaint'. The specific gynaecological complaints significantly associated with war related sexual violence were infertility, chronic lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and sexual dysfunction. In a multivariable analysis the age group of less than or equal to 44 years, being Catholic and having 'at least one gynaecological complaint' remained significantly associated with war related sexual violence. CONCLUSION: The results from this study demonstrate that war related sexual violence is independently associated with the later development of specific gynaecological complaints
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The Thursday Murder Club: Launching a megabrand author - a publishing case study
Get PDFIn 2020, the Christmas book charts in the UK made headlines: Barack Obama’s eagerly awaited autobiography, The Promised Land, was beaten to the top spot by The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, a debut cosy crime novel set in a retirement village. Not only did Osman’s book beat the former US president’s expected bestseller, it also broke records, becoming the fastest-selling debut crime novel of all time. Although Osman has a certain level of fame in the UK from his TV appearances on shows such as Pointless, his celebrity status does not entirely explain the novel’s huge sales. This article tracks the acquisition, publication, and promotion journey of The Thursday Murder Club in order to understand the industry and cultural context of its success and to interrogate the role of celebrity in the creation of author brands. The findings suggest that the unexpected scale of the success of the book owed to a number of factors, including in-depth editing by the novel’s agent, editor, and author to tighten up the plot, an extensive and strategic promotional campaign, the pandemic (which drove interest in the book’s genre and themes), and the quality of the writing. We find that the book’s success was accentuated by Osman’s celebrity status rather than being entirely reliant on it. This research adds to the growing scholarship on celebrity authorship by means of an in-depth case study and provides insight into the processes behind publishing a ‘celebrity’ book and launching a megabrand author
