Preliminary design of a RESPER probe prototype, configured in a multi dipole-dipole array
Electrical resistivity and relative dielectric permittivity are two independent physical properties which characterize the behaviour of bodies when these are excited by an electromagnetic field. The measurement of these properties provides crucial information regarding the practical use of bodies (for example, materials
that conduct electricity), as well as numerous other purposes.
Some studies have shown that the electrical resistivity and dielectric permittivity of a body can be obtained by measuring the transfer impedance using a system with four electrodes, although these electrodes do not require resistive contact with the investigated body [Grard, 1990a, b; Grard and Tabbagh, 1991; Tabbagh et al., 1993; Vannaroni et al., 2004; Del Vento and Vannaroni, 2005]. In this case, the current is
made to circulate in the body by electric coupling, supplying the electrodes with an alternating electrical signal of low or middle frequency (LF-MF). In this type of investigation, the range of optimal frequencies for electrical resistivity values of the more common materials is between ≈10 kHz and ≈1 MHz.
The lower limit is effectively imposed by two factors: a) firstly, the Maxwell-Wagner effect, which limits probe accuracy [Frolich, 1990], is the most important limitation and occurs because of interface polarization effects that are stronger at low frequencies, for example below 10 kHz depending on medium resistivity; b) secondly, the need to maintain the amplitude of the current at measurable levels because, given
the capacitive coupling between electrodes and soil, the current magnitude is proportional to frequency.
Conversely, the upper limit is fixed so as to permit analysis of the system under a regime of quasi static approximation, ignoring the factor of the velocity of the cables used for the electrode harness, which degrades the accuracy of the impedance phase measurements. It is therefore possible to make use of an analysis of the system in the LF and MF bands where the electrostatic term is significant. A general electromagnetic calculation produces lower values than a static one, and high resistivity reduces this
differences. Consequently, above 1 MHz a general electromagnetic calculation must be preferred, while below 500 kHz a static calculation would be preferred, and between 500 kHz and 1 MHz both these methods could be applied [Tabbagh et al., 1993]

sostanziale esito positivo.Published1-362A. Fisica dell'alta atmosferaN/A or not JCRope
Published1-361.7. GPR as an effective tool for safety and glacier characterization: experiences and future development
In recent times, the GPR technique has assumed an important role in glacial environment exploration. Ice thickness, bedrock description, internal water floods or underground channel, glacial structures (as snow layering and crevasses detection) form part of our experience in Antarctica and in high alpine glacier ski areas. In this paper, we present some results of these investigations exploring the possibility of combining our technical expertise on Radio Echo Sounding (RES) instrumentation to develop a system for subglacial environment exploration.Published1-61.8. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Electromagnetic ice absorption rate at Dome C, Antarctica
Radio-echo sounding (RES) is a radar technique widely employed in Antarctica and
Greenland to define bedrock topography but, over the last decade, it has also played an important role
in subglacial lake exploration and hydrogeological studies at the bedrock/ice interface. In recent
studies, bedrock characterization has been improved through analysis of radar power echoes to evaluate
the electromagnetic (EM) properties of the interface and allow the distinction between wet and dry
interfaces. The RES received signal power depends on ice absorption and bedrock reflectivity, which is
closely linked to the specific physical condition of the bedrock. In this paper, an evaluation of EM ice
absorption was conducted starting from RES measurements collected over subglacial lakes in
Antarctica. The idea was to calculate ice absorption starting from the radar equation in the case of
subglacial lakes, where the EM reflectivity value is considered a known constant. These values were
compared with those obtained from analysis of ice-core dielectric profiles from EPICA ice-core drilling
data. Our analysis reveals that the ice absorption rate calculated from RES measurements has an average
value of 7.2 dBkm–1, and it appears constant, independent of the subglacial lake depth in different zones
of the Dome C area.Published849-8547A. Geofisica di esplorazioneJCR Journalrestricte
