Influence of exposure environments on the durability of slagblended Cements
© ICDCS 2018. All rights reserved. Both chlorides and sulphates combine in seawater to affect the durability of reinforced concrete structures located in marine environments. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on slag blended cement systems, cured for 7 days, before exposure to a combined solution of sodium chloride (30 g/L) and sodium sulphate (3 g/L). Two slags of different chemical compositions, designated as slags 1 and 2 were respectively blended with Portland cement CEM I 52.5R at 30 and 70 wt.% replacement levels. Mechanical tests on mortar samples were complemented by microstructural examination and chemical characterisation on paste samples, all using a constant w/b ratio of 0.5, to investigate the influence of exposure environment. The exposure environments include water and ponding in combined chloride-sulphate solution at 20 °C and 38 °C (to reflect temperate and tropical climates). The results show that temperature has a significant effect on the durability of slag blends. Reduced sorptivity at higher temperature led to reduced chloride penetration at early age. This effect is less so at later age. Compressive strength generally improved with increase in chloride penetration. SEM-EDX elemental analysis provided a good basis for following chloride penetration profile. XRD analysis showed the conversion of monosulphate to ettringite, Friedel's salt and Kuzel's salt upon exposure to salt solution, which possibly led to improved sorptivity and mechanical properties
Monitoring the development of microcracks in reinforced concrete caused by sustained loading and chloride induced corrosion
Chloride-induced corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete structures is one of the main problems affecting their durability and it has been studied for decades, but most of them have focused on concrete without cracking or not subjected to any structural load. In fact, concrete structures are subjected to various types of loads, which lead to cracking when the tensile stress in concrete exceeds its tensile strength. Cracking could increase transport properties of concrete and accelerate the ingress of harmful substances (Cl -, O2, H2 O, CO2). This could initiate and accelerate different types of deterioration processes in concrete, including corrosion of steel reinforcement. The expansive products generated by the deterioration processes themselves can initiate cracking. The success of concrete patch repairs can also influence microcracking at the interface as well as the patch repair itself. Therefore, monitoring the development of microcracking in reinforced concrete members is extremely useful to assess the defects and deterioration in concrete structures. In this paper, concrete beams made using 4 different mixes were subjected to three levels of sustained lateral loading (0%, 50% and 100% of the load that can induce a crack with width of 0.1mmon the tension surface of beams - F 0.1) and weekly cycles of wetting (1 day)/drying (6 days) with chloride solution. The development of microcracking on the surface of concrete was monitored using the Autoclam Permeability System at every two weeks for 60 weeks. The ultrasonic pulse velocity of the concrete was also measured along the beam by using the indirect method during the test period. The results indicated that the Autoclam Permeability System was able to detect the development of microcracks caused by both sustained loading and chloride induced corrosion of steel in concrete. However, this was not the case with the ultrasonic method used in the work (indirect method applied along the beam); it was sensitive to microcracking caused by sustained loading but not due to corrosion.</p
Influence of sulfide on the onset of chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement in alkali-activated slags
In alkali-activated slags (AAS), where ground granulated blast furnace slag is used as the main precursor, the presence of reduced sulfur species yields a highly reducing pore solution environment. This study investigates the influence of sulfide on steel passivation in alkali-activated slag mortars immersed in alkaline (1 M NaOH) and alkaline chloride-rich (1 M NaOH with 5 M NaCl) solutions, and the dependency of chloride-induced pitting on the immersion time and the concentration of sulfide in simulated alkali-activated slag pore solutions (containing 0.80 M OH- and 0 M, 0.01 M and 0.45 M HS-) by means of electrochemical techniques. Surfacesensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and Raman spectroscopic analysis of the corrosion products formed on the steel surfaces, both in alkali-activated slag mortars and in simulated pore solutions, shows that sulfide has a very important influence in altering – but not necessarily in a deleterious way – the characteristics of the steel surface under these conditions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
