Efficient low-brightness-pumped Raman amplification of a single high-order Bessel-mode in 335-m of 70-μm-diameter silica-core step-index fiber
We experimentally demonstrate Raman amplification of signal pulses in a high-order Bessel mode (LP06) at a wavelength of 1121 nm in a 335-m step-index fiber with a 70-μm diameter, 0.227-NA pure-silica core. This was pumped by 5-ns multimode pulses at 1065 nm from an Yb-doped fiber MOPA. The mode purity of the amplified pulses is well preserved to 23 dB of average-power gain, to 774 W of peak power in 2 ns pulses at 20 kHz repetition rate, when pumped with a peak power of 942 W. The pump depletion as averaged over the signal pulses reaches 59%. We believe that this is the first demonstration of stable mode propagation and Raman amplification of a single Bessel-like higher order mode in a fiber of hundreds of meters. This shows the potential for efficient power scaling of a single signal mode with low-brightness pumping, comparable with that from continuous-wave multimode diode lasers

An Equivalence between the Kaminski Hierarchy and the Barua Hierarchy
In this paper, we argue several decompositions of ω-regular sets into rational G_δ sets. We measure the complexity of ω-regular sets by the number of rational G_δ sets obtained by the decompositions. Barua (1992) studied a hierarchy R_n (n=1, 2, 3,…), where R_n is a class of ω-regular sets which are decomposed into n rational G_δ sets forming a decreasing sequence. On the other hand, Kaminski (1985) defined a hierarchy B_m (m=1, 2, 3,…), where B_m is a class of ω-regular sets which are decomposed into 2m rational G_δ sets not necessarily forming a decreasing sequence. As a main result, we claim that R_=B_n in spite of the differences of defining conditions.12KJ00004474296論文Articledepartmental bulletin pape
Indian Convertible Bonds with Unspecified Terms: An Empirical Study
Indian convertible bonds have two peculiar features that make them possibly unique in the world: a) the bonds are compulsorily converted into equity without any option, and b) the conversion terms are not specified at the time of issue but are left to be determined subsequently by the Controller of Capital Issues (CCI) who is the government functionary regulating capital issues in India. A naive model would say that the market simply forms an estimate of the likely conversion terms and then values the bond as if these terms were prespecified. This paper examines the market prices of one of the largest issues of Indian convertible bonds with unspecified terms. The empirical investigation convincingly rejects the naive model and demonstrates that changes in the markets expectation of the conversion terms are a significant factor affecting the pricing relationship. These changes are significantly correlated with the stock price itself. We do not, however, find any evidence that the market expects the CCI to adjust the conversion terms on the basis of the actual market price to protect the bondholder. But, there is strong evidence that changes in expected conversion terms affect the share price through the dilution effect. Since the unspecified terms have only added to the uncertainty of the bondholders without giving them any perceived benefits we recommend that this system should be abolished. In a companion paper, Barua and Varma (1991) present a theoretical valuation model for the Indian convertible bonds with unspecified terms. The empirical results in this paper confirm the predictions of that model.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
