Strategies for trapping organochlorine organic pollutants with carbonaceous materials
The challenge is to prevent their adverse effects on the biota or their migration to other compartments of the agroecosystem. The use of nanoporous carbonaceous materials originated from plants can be one way. The objective of this thesis is ta select from a panel of carbon matrices those capable of effectively trapping contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), as well as chlordecone (CLD). These matrices differ from each other by their properties (biochar vs activated carbon), conditioned by the pyrolysis and/or activation process used, as well as by the nature of the raw material used. The challenge is to produce, characterize and select the most efficient carbonaceous materials to maximize this sequestration. ln vitro environmental availability or bioaccessibility tests were used to perform a screening and then in vivo tests were set up to validate the effectiveness on a small number of carbonaceous materials. The in vivo tests were developed on three models of biota. An interaction emerges between the type of test, the carbon matrix used and the contaminants. lt appears that the effectiveness of the strategy depends on the target biota or the assessment method used. Regarding contaminants, it appears that the structure of the molecule could be at the origin of different behaviours. Regarding carbonaceous matrices, activated carbons were more efficient than biochars. Specific surface and microporosity are necessary conditions for the efficiency of activated carbons and mainly explain the difference in efficiency between biochars and activated carbons
Modulation of intestinal absorption of chlordecone (CLD) using sequestering substances : Application on contaminated zones breed
In order to maintain the latter while protecting consumers of terrestrial animal products, several strategies are being studied. This thesis is focused on one of them which consists of sequestering chlordecone in order to significantly reduce its bioavailability for the animal. The experimental approach was carried out in stages, based on three pillars: biochar or activated carbon as sequestering materials, the use of artificial soils and the concept of relative bioavailability to assess sequestration performance. Tests conducted with activated charcoal (based on dates kernels, coconut or lignite) have shown that chlordecone is sequestered in an aqueous medium or in animals, but for the latter it only works if chlordecone and sequestering matrix had a prolonged contact time (or maturation) with ingestion by the animal. These results show the interest of in situ sequestration, ie directly in the contaminated soil likely to be ingested by the animals. As activated charcoal has a high cost, a priori less expensive carbonaceous materials have been tested: biochars based on various wood species. These biochars produced at two pyrolysis temperatures (500 and 700 ° C) were characterized from a physical point of view (porosity) and selected via an in vitro environmental availability test. In vivo tests (on piglets) did not show that these selected biochars were able to effectively sequester chlordecone, since the relative bioavailability was not different from one (reference = standard soil without organic matter). The presence of peat in the artificial soil does not prevent trapping by exogenous carbonaceous matrices. The in vitro test used and the in vivo test give equivalent tendencies to reduce the relative bioavailability, which is interesting in a logic of validation of the in vitro test. These positive results show that the strategy of sequestration by highly carbonaceous materials is possible, requires properties of microporosity and access to pores close to those of an activated carbon, but contingent on the experimental conditions implemented, they must be continued and validated on natural soil
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Chlordecone (CLD) is a persistent organic pollutant extensively used in banana plantations in the French West Indies (FWI) between 1972 and 1993. This insecticide has contaminated approximately one-third of the islands' agricultural soils and has permeated various environmental compartments. Consequently, CLD has infiltrated the food chains, leading to adverse health effects on the local population. A depuration strategy has recently been proposed to ensure the compliance of livestock animals before slaughter. During the depuration period, animals eliminate CLD primarily through fecal excretion, either in its parent form or as its metabolite, chlordecol (CLDOH). The proper management of the resulting contaminated animal effluents becomes paramount. Anaerobic digestion (AD) was explored as a potential bioremediation strategy to treat these contaminated effluents. Several approaches were tested, starting with batch conditions, where CLD concentrations were monitored in artificially contaminated organic wastes after incubation under mesophilic (37.5 ºC) and thermophilic (55 ºC) conditions. The concentrations of CLD significantly decreased, while simultaneously, various transformation products (TPs) emerged, indicating efficient degradation of CLD under methanogenic conditions. The degradability of CLDOH, the metabolite found in animal waste, and the fate of the formed TPs were investigated for the first time. The findings revealed an important decrease in the levels of these compounds and an increase in the concentrations of their derivatives. To validate the feasibility of the proposed remediation strategy, animal dejections supplemented with CLD were continuously fed into a lab-scale digester. A substantial decrease in CLD was observed, suggesting that CLD can also be degraded in conditions similar to the ones that can potentially be implemented in the FWI. In conclusion, this work affirms that AD, particularly under thermophilic conditions, is a promising technique for treating animal effluents contaminated with CLD and CLDOH. Toxicological studies on the formed transformation products appear necessary to validate the use of this technique in the field
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Valorization of agro-alimentary waste (dates stones - Phoenix dactylifera) for the removal of organochlorine pesticides from contaminated water
The objective of this thesis is to propose an innovative approach for the depollution of contaminated water by organochlorine pesticides used an adsorption technique on activated carbons from date stones (species : Phoenix dactylifera, types : Ajwa, Anbari et Khudri). Then, study the retention capacity of these column materials in the laboratory with applications on contaminated sites (effluents of agriculture and wastewater treatment plants). The preparation of better activated carbons from date stones by a simple process of pyrolysis preceded by a chemical impregnation with phosphoric acid. Several parameters will be studied in order to determine the optimal conditions of the adsorption such as dose of the adsorbent, pH of the solution, initial concentration of pesticides and time of contact, since the adsorption capacity of an activated carbon depends in part on the capability between the pore size and the dimension of the adsorbed molecules. Therefore, it is essential to optimize the production of activated carbon
Contamination of soil and groundwater by pesticides in the region of Akkar-Northern Lebanon : risk assessment on human health
Akkar is the second agricultural zone in Lebanon. Pesticides are intensely applied in agricultural activities, and the groundwater has been reported to be highly contaminated by some pesticides. Due to the absence of a public network for water distribution, groundwater is used as the main source for drinking water of local inhabitants. The present study focus firstly on the evaluation of groundwater and soil contamination by OCPs, OPPs and ONPs and by heavy metals in order to characterize the degree of contamination. Secondly, it is focusing on the risk assessment of pollution on the population of Akkar. High levels of pesticides were detected in many villages in Akkar plain groundwater. Similarly, high concentrations of OCPs were detected in agricultural soil. A huge difference between the contamination levels in cultivated area and tillage land. Moreover, a significant variation has been established between soil depth. Results showed that some prohibited pesticides are still currently used in Akkar. To complete the background of pollution, trace metallic element As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Cd have been studied. The results showed that soils are moderately polluted by Cd. In parallel, a health study was conducted, the prevalence of nervous disorders; birth defects; cancer and other chronic diseases were exceeded those values reported in other regions. A significant correlation has been established between wells water consumption and the appearance of some diseases.More researches could be realized to identify pesticides levels in human blood or urine. Also it will be necessary to manage pesticides use in this region to reduce their effects on human health
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Study of water and sediment contamination by pesticides
Since the explosion of the chemical industry in the twentieth century and the use of synthetic products, increasing amounts of chemicals, have continued to be released into the environment. However, in recent decades, there has been a growing concern about the fate of these chemicals that threaten water resources. Increased knowledge on the analytical performance and toxicological data on active products has led authorities in industrialized and developing countries to impose various restrictions. Monitoring of contaminants in aquatic environments has been put in place to achieve good ecological state of the environment. Among the most dangerous and the most commonly detected in aquatic organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, their derivatives and pesticides. These contaminants present in trace amounts in aquatic environments. Analyzes require appropriate analytical methods to be both specific and sensitive. The objective of this thesis is to develop analytical methods for the extraction of several families of organic contaminants (pesticides, hydrocarbons ...) in water and sediment. A mathematical model Umetrics was used to study the influence of each interest parameter. Compared to conventional methods, this model reduces the number of experiments, and have very good yields. The optimized methods were then applied to study the natural environment in France and Lebanon
