Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Entering the Interspace
This thesis document explores the relationships between topography, transportation infrastructure, and the experiential self within the urban context of Atlanta Georgia. The site undergoing exploration exists at the crossroads of two major interstates, 1-85 and I-20, and is composed of the disparate pieces of terrain situated between heavily programmed highway corridor spaces and the laboriously engineered topographies existing within them. A series of carefully constructed landforms seeks to represent the revelatory power of personal engagement with this terrain using spatial, functional and performative criteria. The designs also seek to epitomize the power of topographic operations as a principle aspect of landscape architectural design
Eating the Landscape You Live In: How Can Contemporary Communities Be Incorporated into the Agricultural Landscape?
This thesis explores the idea of creating settlements that function aesthetically, as well as economically, by designing and incorporating human living conditions into productive agrarian landscapes. The project designs a village based on the practices associated with sustainable food production at the local community scale. Production practices are examined first and priority placed on these techniques over the typical human settlement pattern. The project examines exactly how humans will be able to occupy the spaces within agricultural production. Human needs are also considered and adaptations made, which can provide an improved way of living by promoting biodiversity through the production that exists in the landscape.
Long before any type of urban developments, transportation routes, and mass production existed; people had to survive on natural resources that grew and lived in their regions. Every small town or village should take advantage of the potential for designing with edible green space in mind because they may not always enjoy the luxury of having produce shipped from afar to their local groceries. For landscape architecture in general, this should be a topic that more people incorporate, even in little increments, to designed spaces. If we are going to replace the natural environment with the built environment, it is only fair to augment parts of that built environment with landscape which provides direct benefits for human and other ecosystems.
This topic is important because landscapes can be designed in ways which incorporate the edible plant repertoire of regions, while following seasonal changes in the plants as well. By creating space within a settlement for sustainable agriculture, we are allowing organisms to thrive and continue the cycles of nutrient replenishment in the soil. The project investigates the possibility of deriving settlement design from production plant operations

Urban Assemblages explores a landscape strategy for the adaptive reuse of abandoned
homes throughout the West End neighborhoods of Birmingham Alabama with the goal of making these properties once again valuable to local communities. Urban Assemblages seeks to empower these communities to become involved in this transformation process.
The thesis explores creative deconstruction techniques, repurposing of existing materials,
and establishing worker training programs focusing on the trades of deconstruction and material salvaging. It further proposes fostering an ongoing relationship between
local art organizations and local communities as a strategy to re-establish neighborhood
enthusiasm for the potential of abandoned sites. Urban assemblages is explored through the theoretical framework of assemblages. Assemblages are utilized as a method of framing a set of complex conditions to more thoroughly understand them
Conservation Design: Linking Development to the Land
Alabama contains well over 500 abandoned mines across the northern part of the state and while some mining zones continue to degrade the landscape over time, others have been reclaimed naturally and left in an ambiguous state. One of these areas is the Cahaba River watershed, which is internationally known for its biodiversity. In recent times, however, it has come under pressure of development and pollution from nearby tributaries. Specifically, the land between Cahaba Heights and Lake Purdy, currently undeveloped wilderness, is disappearing because of residential development from the north and the constant expansion along Highway 280 from the south.
This research investigates how to develop this land in a profitable way for a private developer, but in a productive way for the city using a conservation methodology, initially devised by landscape planner Randall Arendt. The premise is straightforward: a private land developer benefits from the construction of a clustered housing development that works with the land instead of the land working with the development, while the city retains a large portion of the land for public recreation. The resulting landscape not only becomes a quaint neighborhood in the woods, but also creates public amenity in a natural setting
Urban Floodplain Design: Utilizing the Regenerative Disturbance of Flooding to Create Form and Habitat Within the Urban Landscape
Village Creek watered the industrial machine that became Birmingham, AL. Once seen as the lifeblood of the city, attitudes towards Village Creek have deteriorated due to a century of poor development decisions. By creating an ecological corridor along Village Creek, its natural floodplain can be recovered. Through subtle design interventions the regenerative process of the annual flooding can be embraced to give form and create habitat within the landscape. The large scale goal of the research is to promote dispersal and connectivity of an assemblage of species along Village Creek while also providing social and cultural connections for Village Creek floodplain residents.
The project focuses on the flood plain of Village Creek in Ensley where numerous homes have been removed due to annual flooding damage. The situation currently is a large tract of once residential land that now stands as ambiguous terrain between downtown Ensley and Village Creek. The research methodology is to establish conditions that enable the landscape to respond to the regenerative power of the flooding events of Village Creek. To do this, initial conditions will be set to engage the geomorphological processes of deposition and erosion allowing them to organize and give form to the landscape.
These geomorphological processes will be engaged by creating deposition structures from asphalt on the site and placing fluvial rods on the stream bank. Setting up these conditions will engage the natural processes that already occur in the hydraulic landscape. This strategy of engaging disturbance-colonization-succession implemented over time along the entire length of Village Creek will lead to the reintroduction of a riparian corridor along the waterway. This will promote the development of wildlife habitat and improvement of water quality of the stream. It will also give the residents along Village Creek an open space for social interaction and recreation
