Theory of Magnetic Properties in Quantum Electrodynamics Environments: Application to Molecular Aromaticity
In this work, we present ab initio cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) methods which include interactions with a static magnetic field and nuclear spin degrees of freedom using different treatments of the quantum electromagnetic field. We derive explicit expressions for QED-HF magnetizability, nuclear shielding, and spin-spin coupling tensors. We apply this theory to explore the influence of the cavity field on the magnetizability of saturated, unsaturated, and aromatic hydrocarbons, showing the effects of different polarization orientations and coupling strengths. We also examine how the cavity affects aromaticity descriptors, such as the nucleus-independent chemical shift and magnetizability exaltation. We employ these descriptors to study the trimerization reaction of acetylene to benzene. We show how the optical cavity induces modifications in the aromatic character of the transition state leading to variations in the activation energy of the reaction. Our findings shed light on the effects induced by the cavity on magnetic properties, especially in the context of aromatic molecules, providing valuable insights into understanding the interplay between the quantum electromagnetic field and molecules
Lithium-Metal Batteries Using Sustainable Electrolyte Media and Various Cathode Chemistries
Lithium-metal batteries employing concentrated glyme-based electrolytes and two different cathode chemistries are herein evaluated in view of a safe use of the highly energetic alkali-metal anode. Indeed, diethylene-glycol dimethyl-ether (DEGDME) and triethylene-glycol dimethyl-ether (TREGDME) dissolving lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium nitrate (LiNO3) in concentration approaching the solvents saturation limit are used in lithium batteries employing either a conversion sulfur-tin composite (S:Sn 80:20 w/w) or a Li+(de)insertion LiFePO4cathode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) clearly show the suitability of the concentrated electrolytes in terms of process reversibility and low interphase resistance, particularly upon a favorable activation. Galvanostatic measurements performed on lithium-sulfur (Li/S) batteries reveal promising capacities at room temperature (25 °C) and a value as high as 1300 mAh gS-1for the cell exploiting the DEGDME-based electrolyte at 35 °C. On the other hand, the lithium-LiFePO4(Li/LFP) cells exhibit satisfactory cycling behavior, in particular when employing an additional reduction step at low voltage cutoff (i.e., 1.2 V) during the first discharge to consolidate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). This procedure allows a Coulombic efficiency near 100%, a capacity approaching 160 mAh g-1, and relevant retention particularly for the cell using the TREGDME-based electrolyte. Therefore, this work suggests the use of concentrated glyme-based electrolytes, the fine-tuning of the operative conditions, and the careful selection of active materials chemistry as significant steps to achieve practical and safe lithium-metal batteries
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Adsorption and decomposition of ZDDP on lightweight metallic substrates: Ab initio and experimental insights
Lightweight alloys substitute steel in a wide range of industrial applications. It is still unclear whether the lubricant additives currently employed to reduce friction of sliding metallic parts are also efficient on non- ferrous substrates. In particular, the functionality of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs) in contact with Al- and Mg-containing alloys still needs to be understood. In this work, we describe the properties of ZDDP at Al(111), Al(001), Al(331), Mg(0001) and Mg17Al12 surfaces and interfaces. Our calculations indicate that molecular fragments originated from ZDDP chemisorb more strongly on the intermetallic phase Mg17Al12 with respect to aluminum and magnesium, due to the higher surface energy of the mixed substrate. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that the kinetics of the additive decomposition is significantly different on Al and the mixed phase. These results are supported by atomic force microscopy sliding tests, which revealed that the tribofilm formation is observed only on the latter substrate. This work suggests that the tribological performance of lightweight alloys can be enhanced by increasing the additive-surface chemical interactions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
