Attendees were early career researchers and delegates from DLR Projektträger willing to learn more about Open Access and Open Science. My talk comprised aspects of intellectual property rights and licenses, forms of open access, what authors can to to make OA happen and what Open Science means, especially against the backdrop of research integrity. One of my objectives was to make delegates understand that they can make Open Access happen together with the publishers they wanted to work with.</p

Quality Control and Evaluation of Scientific Web Resources
No full textScientific information in the Internet has become crucial for the scientific work. Libraries which operate scientific information services such as Quality Controlled Subject Gateways (QCSG), portals or virtual libraries therefore need to evaluate the quality of scientific resources in order to index them. The following article encloses media-theoretical thoughts on the scientific information space within the new medium Internet and its implications for the contained media products as well as an overview on evaluation approaches. Additionally the article offers practical help such as detailed quality criteria and an analysis of the evaluation process. The practical help is given in a way that allows (subject-)specific adaptation.Qualitätskriterien und Evaluierungswege für wissenschaftliche Internetressourcen. Wissenschaftliche Informationen im Internet gewinnen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Um sie als zuverlässige Ressourcen für die wissenschaftliche Arbeit zu erschließen, müssen sie auf ihre Qualität geprüft werden – eine Aufgabe, die vermehrt von wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken über ihre Internetdienste wie Subject Gateways, Digitale oder Virtuelle Bibliotheken wahrgenommen wird. Der vorliegende Artikel bietet eine medientheoretische Diskussion zum wissenschaftlichen Informationsraum im Internet und den medienbedingten Auswirkungen auf die Inhalte sowie einen Überblick zur Entwicklung von Evaluationsansätzen für Internetressourcen. Die theoretischen Abhandlungen werden durch einen umfangreichen Serviceteil ergänzt, der detailliert Qualitätskriterien und den Evaluierungsprozess in einer Weise aufzeigt, welche die Anpassung an (fach-)spezifische Anforderungen ermöglicht.Critères de qualité et évaluation des ressources scientifiques de l’Internet. L’information scientifique dans l’Internet est devenue importante pour le travail scientifique. C’est pour cette raison que les bibliothèques qui offrent des services d’information scientifique tels que Quality Controlled Subject Gateways, portails et bibliothèques virtuelles doivent évaluer la qualité des ressources scientifiques afin de les indexer. L’article présent propose des idées média-théoriques concernant l’espace de l’information scientifique dans le nouveau médium Internet et concernant les implications pour les produits média inclus. L’article offre de même un aperçu sur plusieurs approches d’évaluation. En plus l’article propose des aides pratique comme des critères de qualité et une analyse du procès d’évaluation. Open Access taken serious means more than free content
No full textThis is a talk I recorded for the CLSTL Conference 2019 https://events.iitgn.ac.in/2019/CLSTL/welcome-to-clstl-2019/ at the Indian Institute of Technology in Gandhinagar. In this short presentation I describe our approach at University of Göttingen to consider free access to content just as one aspect of Open Access. Lessons from Two Academic Contexts for Sustaining the Scholarly Book
No full textMany academic libraries have embraced an active publishing role in recent years, an important component in libraries’ efforts to address mounting pressures throughout the scholarly communications cycle. Libraries in the United States and Germany have been especially assertive in this arena. This article focuses on one particular aspect of libraries’ publishing efforts in Germany and the U.S.: interventions to make the production and dissemination of the scholarly book (in print and electronic formats) more economically sustainable and its content more open. This article discusses the role of the scholarly book for early-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences and reflects on intercontinental differences. The article considers the library efforts in the context of broader, university-based publishing activities in both national contexts, particularly the relationship of library publishing and university presses. The authors discuss how differences and commonalities between the academic and economic contexts in the U.S. and Germany have led to institutional responses that diverge and converge in significant ways and they suggest that such a comparison can usefully inform scholarly communications strategies in both countries. The article considers broad national trends and also draws on examples from the authors’ home institutions: the State and University Library at Göttingen and Cornell University Library in Ithaca, New York.In den letzten Jahren haben zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken mit ihren Publikationsdiensten verlegerische Verantwortung übernommen und reagieren damit auf zunehmende Probleme des wissenschaftlichen Kommunikationssystems. Bibliotheken in den USA und Deutschland sind dabei besonders aktiv. Dieser Artikel geht dabei einem besonderen Aspekt der bibliothekarischen Publikationsdienste nach, wie nämlich wissenschaftliche Infrastrukturen Produktion und Verbreitung des wissenschaftlichen Buches (in Print und elektronischen Formaten) ökonomisch nachhaltig gestalten können und deren Inhalte möglichst frei verfügbar machen. Außerdem diskutieren wir die Rolle des wissenschaftlichen Buches für die wissenschaftliche Karriere in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften im interkontinentalen Vergleich. Der Artikel stellt diese bibliothekarischen Publikationsaktivitäten in ihren nationalen Kontexten dar und geht besonders auf Universitätsverlage ein. Dabei arbeiten wir heraus, wie Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der akademischen und ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen in den USA und Deutschland sich in den jeweiligen Infrastrukturen abgebildet haben, um über diesen Vergleich sinnvoll voneinander lernen zu können. Der Artikel geht auf übergreifende nationale Trends ein und verdeutlicht diese mit Fallbeispielen aus den Institutionen der Autoren: der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Göttingen und der Universitätsbibliothek Cornell in Ithaca, New York
