What is Fiction? Theorising \u27Fictional Narrativisation\u27
No full textDie 2008 an der Universität Göteborg erschienene Dissertation des Germanisten J. Alexander Bareis hat den Anspruch, auf der Basis der medienübergreifenden Fiktionstheorie des US-amerikanischen Philosophen Kendall L. Walton sowie narratologischer Konzepte eine integrative Theorie des spezifisch literarischen fiktionalen Erzählens zu entwickeln. Während dieser Anspruch nur teilweise eingelöst wird, eignet sich die Arbeit hingegen gut als konzise Einführung in Waltons Fiktionstheorie, die in der Germanistik bisher wenig rezipiert wurde, sowie in zentrale Fragestellungen der weiteren Fiktionsforschung.Germanist J. Alexander Bareis published his doctoral thesis on Fiktionales Erzählen (Fictional narrativisation: On the theory of literary fiction as make-believe) at the University of Gothenburg in 2008. His aim is to develop an integrative theory of specifically literary methods of \u27fictional narrativisation\u27. This theory is founded on combining the transmedial theory of fiction by the American philosopher Kendall L. Walton with narratological concepts that are central to any analysis of fictional narratives. Although the theory of \u27fictional narrativisation\u27 falls short of its aim, Bareis\u27 thesis is worthwhile reading for its insights into the central concerns and aporia of theories of fiction. Moreover, it provides a very good introduction to Walton\u27s transmedial approach to theorising fiction
