A study for the restoration of a platform-island oil terminal
The interest in off-shore multi-purpose platforms resides in the wide opportunities involved in it, for example considering the development of large marine infrastructure in the near future. An available off-shore site where testing marine energy converters (exploitation of wave, tidal and hydrokinetic energy, magnetohydrodynamic generator, linear converter) developing and implementing marine aquaculture, can short the gap to the next off-shore activities. Since near the city of Genova there is an abandoned but still well conserved and robust offshore island it is interesting evaluate the cost and intervention to restore it making it an ideal site to explore the new frontier offered by living the oceans off-shore. This paper deals with the restoration study of an existing off-shore structure for oil discharging operations sited 1 miles off the port of Multedo, in the city of Genova, propsing different exploitation scenario
Impact of different photoperiodic treatments on Spinoso Sardo globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus Fiori) head traits and elementary composition
Globe artichoke is an important crop native to the Mediterranean Basin. Spinoso Sardo (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus Fiori) is a widespread Sardinian cultivar that strongly contributes to the agricultural economy of Italy. In this research, Spinoso Sardo was cultivated under natural (control) or extended (15 and 17 h) photoperiods. The effect of day length on few morphological traits, harvest time, elemental composition was evaluated. Head morphology was little influenced by photoperiod, whereas significant differences were observed in peduncle diameter, showing larger values in natural conditions compared to the other day lengths. The harvest time, expressed as days after emergence, display difference among treatments with highest value for natural condition (193 days) and the lowest value for the 17-h day length. The difference in elementary compositions based on C, N and C/N was evaluated in capitula, stem and leaves (leaves of rosette and peduncle). C content did not show any differences among treatments and among organs, while N and C/N were significantly affected by the day lengths. The maximum N % was found in leaves under 15 h photoperiod (3.6%), while the lowest score was detected in floral stem under control conditions (1.5%). The highest C/N was found in capitula under control conditions (72.5), while the lowest value was found in leaves under 15-h photoperiod (10.8). Total protein content based on the N% is significantly affected by the plant organ (P<0.0001), photoperiod (P=0.0084) and the interaction between these two factors (0.0068). These results showed that the day length deeply influenced the Spinoso Sardo morphological and elemental structure and composition
Evaluation of biodiversity and conservation strategies in Pancratium maritimum L. for the NorthernTyrrhenian Sea
Pancratium maritimum L. is an Amaryllidaceous species whose presence is severely endangered in its original range, the sandy coasts of the Mediterranean sea. A molecular analysis has been performed to evaluate the genetic distance among populations coming from different locations, in order to define the best repopulating strategy. The plant genome, analysed by AFLP markers, was found to be extremely homogeneous and conserved, evoking vegetative or autogamous reproductive habits. Seeds from two different locations showed a good germination capability in greenhouse tests, indicating the potential presence of an efficient sexual reproduction. The combination of molecular data and germination tests would support the hypothesis of an autogamous reproduction for this species
The Evolution of the ATLAS Computing Model
Despite the all too brief availability of beam-related data, much has been learned about the usage patterns and operational requirements of the ATLAS computing model since Autumn 2007. Bottom-up estimates are now more detailed, and cosmic ray running has exercised much of the model in both duration and volume. Significant revisions have been made in the resource estimates, and in the usage of those resources. In some cases, this represents an optimization while in others it attempts to counter lack of functionality in the available middleware. There are also changes reflecting the emerging roles of the different data formats. The model continues to evolve with a heightened focus on end-user performance, and the state of the art after a major review process over winter 08/09 is presented
Note vegetazionali sugli aspetti a Euphorbia dendroides L. e Anthyllis barba-jovis L. in Liguria
[Indications for permanent cardiac pacemaking].
Technical improvements have considerably extended the indications for the implantation of pacemakers. Nearly all forms of bradyarrhythmia and some forms of tachycardia, including sinus node disease, have gradually been added alongside stable A-V blocks, while preventive implantation is now commonly indicated in asymptomatic forms and bradycardia due to drugs. The recent appearance of rapid-pulse and scanning pacemakers has further extended their indication to cover other forms of ectopic and reciprocating tachycardia
