Science as Thinking Reason
The author discusses the evolution of Heidegger’s conception of science and brings out its limits as well as its possible developments. An eminent representative of contemporary thinking in the theory of knowledge, Paolo Parrini stands in a line of critical realism in the Kantian neopositivist tradition. This paper returns to and develops the lectio delivered at the award of the ‘Giulio Preti’ Prize in November 2008. </jats:p
Shedding light on dark genes: enhanced targeted resequencing by optimizing the combination of enrichment technology and DNA fragment length
The exome contains many obscure regions difficult to explore with current short-read sequencing methods. Repetitious genomic regions prevent the unique alignment of reads, which is essential for the identification of clinically-relevant genetic variants. Long-read technologies attempt to resolve multiple-mapping regions, but they still produce many sequencing errors. Thus, a new approach is required to enlighten the obscure regions of the genome and rescue variants that would be otherwise neglected. This work aims to improve the alignment of multiple-mapping reads through the extension of the standard DNA fragment size. As Illumina can sequence fragments up to 550 bp, we tested different DNA fragment lengths using four major commercial WES platforms and found that longer DNA fragments achieved a higher genotypability. This metric, which indicates base calling calculated by combining depth of coverage with the confidence of read alignment, increased from hundreds to thousands of genes, including several associated with clinical phenotypes. While depth of coverage has been considered crucial for the assessment of WES performance, we demonstrated that genotypability has a greater impact in revealing obscure regions, with ~1% increase in variant calling in respect to shorter DNA fragments. Results confirmed that this approach enlightened many regions previously not explored
Una tecnica innovativa ed efficiente per gestire lo scenario floristico presente sulla banchina stradale
La manutenzione del patrimonio stradale comprende anche l'intervento di sfalcio della vegetazione erbacea e arbustiva lungo le banchine e le relative pertinenze (quali cigli e scarpate). Questo servizio è fondamentale per il decoro del territorio, ma sopratutto per la sicurezza dei cittadini, per garantire la fruizione della carreggiata e per non ostacolare la visibilità della segnaletica orizzontale e verticale. E' noto altresì come l'incontrollato proliferare delle erbe infestanti porti all'intasamento delle cunette e dei sistemi di raccolta ed evacuazione delle acque meteoriche. Inoltre, la presenza di masse vegetali secche si associa a enormi rischi di incendio, oltre che implicare aspetti problematici di ordine igienico-sanitario. Al contrario, un cotico erboso possibilmente polifita, con prevalenza, garantisce la protezione delle scarpate da fenomeni di erosione e provvede alla rimozione di inquinanti aerodispersi. Storicamente, il compito di tenere sotto controllo la vegetazione spontanea presente lungo le banchine stradali è stato affidato a periodici interventi meccanici di sfalcio.Tali operazioni sipresentano come particolarmente impattanti sulle comunità biologiche, richiedono organizzazioni logistiche non banali e sono impegnative sotto il profilo economico; analoghe considerazioni sono valide per i metodi basati sull'impiego del calore e della fiamma, preoccupanti in quanto capaci di provocare traumi ambientali di non poco momento. Una soluzione che coniuga già nel medio periodo convenienza di bilancio, ecosostenibilità, qualità del risultato anche in termini paesaggistici è la costituzione e il successivo mantenimento di un fitto ed equilibrato consorzio erbaceo permanente con le caratteristiche appena descritte. Ciò è possibile con un numero ridotto di interventi chimici selettivi, finalizzati al vivace contrasto alla vegetazione concorrente rispetto a gramigna e convolvolo, per dare spazio a queste due specie, notoriamente capaci di garantire una copertura equilibrata, stabile e di basso profilo verticale. Uno dei prodotti da tempo utilizzati per tale scopo, noto con il nome commerciale di Rodeo Gold, contiene glifosato, senza aggiunta di tensioattivi e/o coformulanti. L'uso è autorizzato dal mistero della salute. Il prodotto è da considerarsi sicuro nei confronti di operatori, cittadini, animali domestici, fauna e ambiente in genere, non è volatile, non si muove nel terreno nè in orizzontale nè in in verticale, si degrada velocemente nel suolo in sostanze riconosciute dalla natura e quindi non inquina e sfugge ai fenomeni di bioaccumulo; viene assorbito solo dalle foglie e non interferisce nè con lo sviluppo radicale nè con la germinabilità dei semi presenti nel terreno. Il presente volume descrive le attività sperimentali svolte in un biennio in condizioni di piena aderenza alla realtà e finalizzate alla valutazione di parametri biologici, chimici ed ecologici in un test di confronto tra trattamenti convenzionali (sfalcio meccanico) e applicazioni di Rodeo gold

Study and analysis of the panel painting of the Madonna del Rosario with Dominican and Franciscan saints is kept in the church of Maria SS. del Rosario in the Parrini village, a small fraction of Partinico, in the province of Palermo. The restoration intervention allowed the discovery of an initials that reveal the author: the painter, perhaps Venetian, Geronimo Rizzardi, a mannerist artist inserted in the context of the city of Palermo at the end of the sixteenth century
Il doppio e la figura artificiale in Hoffmann
L'elaborato verte sull'indagine del tema del doppio e della figura artificiale in alcune opere dell'autore E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), figura importante all'interno del Romanticismo tedesco.
Dopo aver introdotto il doppio all’interno del contesto romantico ed aver passato in rassegna la sua trattazione nelle varie epoche storiche, focalizzandosi poi sui risvolti psicoanalitici da esso implicati, passeremo a contestualizzare l’autore e la sua poetica all’interno del periodo storico-culturale oggetto della nostra analisi, soffermandosi sulle influenze da parte di altri autori, in particolare Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853).
Nello specifico verranno presi in esame tre diversi generi letterari, ai quali corrispondono tre opere diverse: per il genere fiaba l'analisi si incentra su Der goldene Topf (1814), per il racconto il focus verte su Der Sandmann (1815), poi confrontato con il racconto Die Automate (1816), mentre per il genere romanzo ci incentreremo su Die Elixiere des Teufels (1815-1816). L'obiettivo di tale ricerca volge a dimostrare la piena padronanza del tema del doppio da parte dell'autore oggetto del nostro studio, la quale condurrà ad esiti sempre diversi ed originali, diversi per ogni genere letterario esaminato, così come il ricorso al tema della figura artificiale che assume sfaccettature diverse a seconda del contesto di riferimento.
The paper focuses on the investigation of the theme of the double and the artificial figure in some works by the author E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), an important figure within German Romanticism.
After having introduced the double in the romantic context and having reviewed its treatment in the various historical periods, then focusing on the psychoanalytic aspects involved by it, we will move on to contextualize the author and his poetry within the historical-cultural period, which is object of our analysis, focusing on the influences of other authors, in particular Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853).
Specifically, three different literary genres will be examined, to which correspond three different works: for the fairy tale genre the analysis focuses on Der goldene Topf (1814), for the tale the spotlight is on Der Sandmann (1815), then compared with the tale Die Automate (1816), while for the novel genre we will focus on Die Elixiere des Teufels (1815-1816). The aim of this research is to demonstrate the full mastery of the theme of the double by the author object of our study, which will lead to different and original results, different for each literary genre examined, as well as the use of the theme of the artificial figure that takes on different facets depending on the context of reference
Hermeneutics and Epistemology
In a collection of essays published in the 1970s under the title Vernunft in die Zeitalter der Wissenschaft, Gadamer confronts developments in analytical epistemology, arguing about epistemology from a hermeneutical point of view. Relations between the two traditions remain difficult. Paolo Parrini was among the few who opened to a real dialogue, neither superficial nor formal. He considered the hermeneutical tradition from an epistemological point of view, finding many connections via a third view between metaphysical realism and strong relativism. This theoretically dense and challenging perspective was expressed in two essays – “Ermeneutica ed epistemologia” (1998) and “Ermeneutica ed epistemologia 2: Heidegger, Kant e la verità” (2011). Parrini focused on the concept of Offenheit der Erfahrung in Gadamer’s Wahrheit und Methode and, later, on Heidegger’s theory of truth as alètheia. In this paper the author argues that original results of Parrini’s research confirm the fruitfulness of the encounter between hermeneutics and epistemology. He tries at the same time to identify some friction points and theoretical constraints, for further comparative development, in theory of language and theory of history, on which Gadamer’s ontological hermeneutics lies. The first tends to eliminate any distance between experience and language; the second presents conflicting aspects about identity conditions of past events, as investigated in history. Desde sus comienzos, la lucha libre mexicana ha reflejado la pluralidad social del país. En las diferentes arenas del país donde se practica el llamado deporte espectáculo se pueden observar luchadores hombres, luchadoras mujeres, minis, luchadores y luchadoras extranjeras. Como parte de ese espejo social que es el pancracio, también hay un espacio para quienes rompen con la heteronormatividad y transgreden los modelos tradicionales de masculinidad. Ellos son los luchadores exóticos, un grupo de gladiadores que han sido asociados a lo homosexual, y que al paso del tiempo han construido una identidad que hoy en día cuestiona el origen del término.Since its foundation, Mexican wrestling reflects Mexican social diversity. On different arenas where this sport, also named as spectacle, is practiced, men, women, little men and a group of wrestlers, called exotics, can be seen. As a part of this social mirror, wrestling offers an space for these guys that break down hetero normativity and transgress traditional models of Mexican masculinities.
