No full textDie demografische Entwicklung ist seit Langem Thema öffentlicher Debatten. Weitgehend unbemerkt geblieben sind jedoch die deutlichen regionalen Unterschiede der Geburtenraten in Deutschland. Sinkende Fertilität ist nicht überall zu beobachten, in manchen Regionen ist sie sogar ähnlich hoch wie in den als besonders familienfreundlich geltenden Ländern Schweden und Frankreich. Barbara Fulda zeigt anhand einer Fallstudie zweier Landkreise, weshalb die bisherigen Erklärungen die deutlichen regionalen Unterschiede nicht ausreichend dokumentieren: Historisch gewachsene kulturelle Normen von Elternschaft und Familie sind zu berücksichtigen

How to target apoptosis signaling pathways for the treatment of pediatric cancers
No full textApoptosis represents one of the most important forms of cell death in higher organisms and is typically dysregulated in human cancers, including pediatric tumors. This implies that ineffective engagement of cell death programs can contribute to tumor formation as well as tumor progression. In addition, the majority of cytotoxic therapeutic principles rely on the activation of cell death signaling pathways in cancer cells. Blockade of signaling networks that lead to cell death can therefore confer treatment resistance. A variety of genetic and epigenetic events as well as dysfunctional regulation of signaling networks have been identified as underlying causes of cell death resistance in childhood malignancies. Apoptosis pathways can be therapeutically exploited by enhancing proapoptotic signals or by neutralizing antiapoptotic programs. The challenge in the coming years will be to successfully transfer this knowledge into the development of innovative treatment approaches for children with cancer

No full textTogether with its astrological text, the figurative zodiac of a Fulda manuscript from around 800 (Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, F III 15a) appears as the oldest known manuscript testimony of this type of iconography. Particularities of text and illustrations of the zodiacal signs - especially those of the Gemini - suggest that they have not been copied directly from ancient sources, but rather from models transmitted by precarolingian monastic communities. Several figures of the pictorial series to which the zodiac belongs point to the British isles.Pourvu d'un texte astrologique, le zodiaque figuré du manuscrit de Fulda (Bâle, Universitätsbibliothek, F III 15a), datant des alentours de 800, offre le témoignage manuscrit vraisemblablement le plus ancien, connu à ce jour, de cette iconographie. Les particularités des passages textuels et des illustrations des signes zodiacaux -celles des Gémeaux notamment - suggèrent qu'ils n'ont pas été copiés directement de sources antiques, mais plutôt à partir de modèles transmis par des communautés monastiques précarolingiennes. Ce zodiaque, ainsi que plusieurs autres illustrations de la série picturale dont il fait partie, indiquent comme origine les îles Britanniques.Obrist Barbara. Culture's influence regionally differing social milieus and variations in fertility rates
No full textHow can we understand subnational differences in fertility rates? The most common explanations see the key to these differences in the socio-structural composition of a region's population and its structural conditions. However, such explanations fail to account for fertility rate differences in regions with similar populations and structures. This paper analyzes two social milieus in southern Germany and argues that variations in their fertility rates can only be understood through their cultural differences. Family extension patterns as well as opportunity structures (such as the availability of childcare facilities) are substantially influenced by the regionally differing cultural norms formed and held by social milieu members. To better explain differences in fertility rates and to understand the regionally differing effects of family policy measures, demographic research therefore needs to include culture in its understanding of demographic behavior.Warum unterscheiden sich regionale Geburtenraten in Deutschland? Die Forschung begründet die großen Unterschiede mit der soziostrukturellen Zusammensetzung der Bevölkerung und den strukturellen Bedingungen einer Region. Unterschiede der Fertilitätsraten zwischen Regionen, deren Bevölkerung und Struktur sich ähneln, können hierdurch jedoch nicht erklärt werden. Die Analyse zweier sozialer Milieus in Süddeutschland zeigt, dass kulturelle Unterschiede ein weiterer wichtiger Erklärungsfaktor sind. Erstens werden strukturelle Gegebenheiten (zum Beispiel Angebote der Kinderbetreuung und das Vereinsleben) durch die Angehörigen eines sozialen Milieus als Träger regionaler sozialer Normen ausgestaltet, was Auswirkungen auf die Lebensbedingungen von Familien hat. Zweitens werden Milieumitglieder durch diese kulturelle Normen in ihrem Familienerweiterungsverhalten beeinflusst. Um regional unterschiedliche Auswirkungen familienpolitischer Maßnahmen auf Fertilitätsraten zu verstehen, sollte zukünftige demografische Forschung kulturelle Unterschiede berücksichtigen
