The Paradox of Emotions in the Theatre of Jean-Paul Sartre
The aim of this essay is to illustrate Jean-Paul Sartre's solution to
Diderot's Paradox of the Actor. The first object of the analysis is the explicit
response that Sartre offered to the Paradox: that is, the one provided through
the theory of “unrealization” in L’imaginaire and L’idiot de la famille. In this
case, Sartre shows how the paradox is actually based on a false alternative.
Secondly, the essay examines the problem of emotions in the Esquisse d'une
théorie des émotions and in the Kean drama. Responding to Diderot through
a dramatization of his philosophy, Sartre radicalizes the paradox itself,
including in expressive success – thanks to the “depersonalizing” process of
unrealisation – that very emotion which for Diderot was incompatible with
judgement. Finally, the essay examines the Sartrian theory of “counter-
mystification”, and shows how it was inspired by a comparison with Brecht
and Artaud.

Quality and Safety in Commercial Baby Foods
Nutrient-rich baby foods are required with particularly high standards of quality and safety expressed through product specifications or attributes. These foods are generally subjected to thermal processes that could involve a reduction of essential elements, as well as in the formation of potentially harmful molecules. This paper aimed at detecting the presence, in some baby foods, of compounds derived from Maillard reactions, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and total Maillard Reaction Products (MRPs), as well as at evaluating the hypothetical levels of HMF daily intake by infants and children fed with the tested products. Baby food samples included milk powders, lyophilized meat-based foods, powdered creams based on cereals, homogenized jarred foods based on processed cheese, fish, vegetables, and meat. As far as the healthiness of the tested foods is concerned, significant quantities of total MRPs were found. The lyophilized meat-based foods samples showed the highest levels of total MRPs. At 380 nm, all the samples exceeded the total MRPs concentration of 1000 mg/100g. The analysis revealed the presence of HMF in all the samples under study. However, none of the samples exceeded the threshold concentration of 20 mg/Kg. The highest values were recorded for the category of lyophilized meat-based foods and for a sample of homogenized veal-based food. The results for the hypothetical daily levels of HMF intake by babies showed that, for the age group over 12 months, a value of 3.6 mg was reached. The largest percentage contribution was imputable to the homogenized jarred foods based on proteins and vegetables
Capillary thinning analysis
The data analysis package is composed of three distinct scripts designed to be run in Matlab with png image files. ContactAngle.m measures the contact angle of a liquid bridge and the spreading distance on the substrate for a series of images during liquid bridge thinning. Startpoint_Symmetry finds the minimum radius for a series of liquid bridge thinning images, identifies the start and end point of thinning, and gives information about the overall symmetry of the trials. EC_binning identifies the fitting region, fits and reports relaxation time for elastocapillary thinning fluids. For all three scripts, an example dataset is provided to demonstrate script functionality. This collection of scripts is a package for analyzing extensional rheology data of liquid bridges. While this was created with Dripping-onto-Substrate datasets, this data analysis package may be useful for other liquid bridge thinning applications such as CaBER. Any pre-processing of images, such as binarizing, converting to png or cropping, can be completed with ImageJ.This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. CON-75851, project 00074041. Improvement of Cellulose Hydrolysis Process and Cost Savings
The hydrolysis process to obtain the so-called “reducing sugars” represents the main step involved in the
production of the second generation bioethanol. This product can be obtained directly from various types of green
biomass, replacing the use of cereals cultivations, with obvious benefits to the environment and the economy of
agricultural production. However, it is necessary to improve the hydrolysis process of the cellulose to achieve this
goal. To this purpose, we applied a chemical process formerly used. The values of sugars yield were increased by
about 40% with respect to the previous study. Further significant cost savings were accomplished, resulting from
the recovery of the by-product, calcium sulfate, commercially known as gypsum

The bridge: suggestions about the meaning of a pictorial motif
Developing research begun at the Warburg Institute in 1983, this paper reflects on the construction of meaning in a work of art, through the analysis of the bridge’s function in painting. It tries to reply to some objections the author received there from Gombrich, about the chance of finding a stable content in the configuration of the bridge. Hence, the study reconsiders the concept of ‘motif’ applied to this structure. In a semiotic perspective a motif is partially independent as regards to a single textual organization, because it has a mobile and migrant feature. However, it is also partially flexible as it depends upon the same organization. The inquiry shows that bridge’s internal structure corresponds to the category of a ‘junction’, with two opposite items, ‘conjunction’ and ‘disjunction’. The development of this theoretical object can be carried out also by figures that are not ‘bridges’, in the natural sense of the word. Furthermore, its meaning does not depend upon the number of examples we can find but only upon their relevance for constructing a ‘grammar of cases’. Differently from the traditional iconographical approach, but also from panofskian iconology, the analysis moves not only towards the simple or complex content of a figure but also towards its description
ENZO BENEDETTO E "FUTURISMO-OGGI". CORRISPONDENZA (1969-1992)
The poet, author, journalist and painter Enzo Benedetto, was born in Calabria with Rome as his adopted city. Since 1923, he belonged to the Futurist Movement. In 1969, he founded, in Rome, the review «Futurismo-oggi» providing its direction until 1993 the year of his death.
The research concentrates on the copious and selected correspondence concerning the period 1969-1992, between the Director and several collaborators of the roman periodical. This review has represented in the second half of the twentieth century a defence, propaganda and exploitation of the Marinetti's avant-garde.
Biographic and bibliographic outlines of the correspondents and the list of the names follow the index of the documents.
At the end the whole filing of «Futurismo-oggi» is of the equivalent standard of the research-plan Iride 900
