Recent Perceptions of Rural Australia in Italian and Italian Australian Narrative
Italian settlement in rural and outback areas of Australia during the late 1800s and early 1900s has remained a largely unsung saga while most Italians migrating to Australia after 1947 ultimately settled in urban areas. Few narrative writers have written about non-urban Australia in substantially social realist terms. More recently, this trend had taken a post-modern perspective in a few Italian Australian and Italian writers who depict the Australian outback as providing a solution to the protagonists' life quest and promote a discourse on nature as a dynamic, positive and vital element that contrasts with man's static negativism
Characterization of Chemoresistance in Pancreatic Cancer: A Look at MDR-1 Polymorphisms and Expression in Cancer Cells and Patients
Pancreatic malignancy is the fourth cause of cancer-related death in Western countries and is predicted to become the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality by 2030. The standard therapies (FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel) are not resolutive because this type of cancer is also characterized by a high chemoresistance, due in part to the activity of the ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) pumps accounting for the reduction in the intracellular concentration of the drugs. In this work, we analyze the occurrence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the MDR-1 gene, in different pancreatic cancer cell lines, and in tissues from pancreatic cancer patients by DNA sequencing, as well as the expression levels of MDR-1 mRNA and protein, by qRT-PCR and Western Blot analysis. We found that gemcitabine-resistant cells, in conjunction with homozygosis of analyzed SNPs, showed high MDR-1 basal levels with further increases after gemcitabine treatment. Nevertheless, we did not observe in the human PDAC samples a correlation between the level of MDR-1 mRNA and protein expression and SNPs. Preliminary, we conclude that in our small cohort, these SNPs cannot be used as molecular markers for predicting the levels of MDR-1 mRNA/protein levels and drug responses in patients with PDAC
a construção do país.
On February 6th 2013 the Court has granted New Zealand permission to intervene in the Whaling in the Antarctic case under article 63 of the Statute. Taking into account the concern expressed by Japan, the Court has accepted to modify the procedural rights of the original parties due to the intervention of the third state. This unprecedented decision is difficult to reconcile with the Rules of Court. The author discusses the various legal arguments that may justify the decision of the Court
Tapered fibers for optogenetics: Gaining spatial resolution in deep brain regions by exploiting angle-selective light injection systems
This work describes a method to inject light into tapered optical fibers (TFs) in order to achieve site-selective and wide-volume optical control of neural activity with a single optical setup. The method relies on a Galvanometric - Resonant mirrors scan head, employed to inject light into the fiber to: (i) select a specific subset of guided modes obtaining localized illumination or (ii) to scan between the different guided modes at high-rate to obtain full NA-like light injection on time scales >0.2 ms. This is shown by analysing the light emission profiles from the TF with different voltage biases applied to the Galvanometric and the Resonant mirrors, and comparing them with a standard Full NA light-injection. With the aim to find the experimental parameters to obtain efficient Full NA - like emission profile, the Emission Length and the First Emission Diameter of TFs were extracted and compared with an ideal wide-volume emitter. Both Galvanometric and Resonant scanners methods shown a good agreement with the reference values of the standard Full NA injection, allowing neuroscientists to switch from site-selective to wide-volume illumination using a single optical setup. © 2019 IEEE
Depth-resolved fiber photometry with a single tapered optical fiber implant
Fiber photometry is increasingly utilized to monitor fluorescent sensors of neural activity in the brain. However, most implementations are based on flat-cleaved optical fibers that can only interface with shallow tissue volumes adjacent to the fiber. We exploit modal properties of tapered optical fibers (TFs) to enable light collection over an extent of up to 2 mm of tissue and multisite photometry along the taper. Using a single TF, we simultaneously observed distinct dopamine transients in dorsal and ventral striatum in freely moving mice performing a simple, operant conditioning task. Collection volumes from TFs can also be engineered in both shape and size by microstructuring the nonplanar surface of the taper, to optically target multiple sites not only in the deep brain but, in general, in any biological system or organ in which light collection is beneficial but challenging because of light scattering and absorption. © 2019, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc
