No full textEste artículo intenta explicar por qué los consejos que Álvaro Alonso Barba dio al Gobierno
de Felipe IV para mejorar su política minera fueron aparentemente desatendidos. Analiza un
conjunto de documentos desconocidos del Archivo de Indias sobre la cuestión y publica algunos
de ellos. Estos documentos nos ayudan a comprender el último período de la vida de
Alonso Barba, su viaje a España, que no había sido bien comprendido por los historiadores.
Nuestra propuesta es que el Gobierno escuchó seriamente sus consejos técnicos. Sin embargo,
no quiso seguir su sugerencia de privatizar las minas andaluzas y, a causa de los costes de
la guerra contra Portugal, no dispuso de fondos para llevar a cabo las mejoras técnicas que
sugería.This paper tries to explain why the advice that Álvaro Alonso Barba gave to the Government
of Philip IV concerning the improvement of its mining policy apparently went unheeded. It
analyses a group of unknown documents in the Archivo de Indias concerning this question
and edits some of them. These documents help us to understand the last part of Alonso Barba’s
life, specifically his journey to Spain, which has not been well understood by historians. Our
proposal is that the Crown listened seriously to his technical advice. However, the Crown did
not wish to follow his suggestion to privatize the mines and (because of the costs of the war
against Portugal) did not have the funds to carry out his suggestions concerning technical
improvements
