Comparative kinetic study of the thermal decomposition of nanocellulose produced by H2SO4 hydrolysis, Tempo, and AVAP processes, 2015

No full text
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are of great interest as reinforcing phases for polymer matrix composites; however, CNCs and CNFs prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis and TEMPO process, respectively, have been reported to lack the thermal stability necessary for incorporation in many polymer systems. We have compared the thermal stability of CNCs and CNFs prepared by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis, TEMPO, and AVAP processes and the corresponding starting materials by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). We found that the AVAP process does not appreciably reduce the thermal stability of the nanocellulose relative to the cellulose in the starting material. Sulfuric acid hydrolysis and TEMPO oxidation of cellulose gives CNCs and CNFs, respectively, that have a much lower thermal stability than the cellulose from which they were prepared. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to examine the degree of crystallinity and crystallite size of the nanomaterials and corresponding starting materials; however, the degree of crystallinity determined by XRD showed no correlation with the thermal stability of the nanocellulose materials

Novel is imitation of life. Novelists present a whole life in his novel. Every man has its own words view which is his philosophy. The philosophy of life is the basic theme of every novel. It does not mean that a novelist wants to explain any moral lesson or philosophy like a philosopher. The tradition of philosophical and moral concept in Urdu novels began from very first novelist Deputy Nazeer Ahmad. After him, philosophical concepts in novel were promoted by Rashid-ul-Khari, Praim Chand, Sajjad Zaheer, Qurat-ul-Ain Haider, Ahsan Farooqi, Abdullah Hussain, Khadija Mastoor, Jamila Hashime, Intazer Hussain, Bano Qudseea, Raheem Gul and Mirza Athar Baig. This research article focuses on above said novelists. These novelists have different philosophical views which are explored in this article

A Study of the Otherness of Identity in Teen Novels (A Case Study of Jamila Govin’s Novel the Horse’s Eye)

No full text
Identity is a phenomenon that is created in the course of social communication by establishing a boundary between the self and the other. The significance of this concept during adolescence calls for a rethinking of it in the field of literature. By borrowing Western concepts and values and combining them with Eastern identity characteristics, Jamila Gavin depicts the identity-making and acceptance of immigrants in The Eye of the Horse. It is the purpose of this paper to answer the following questions: how do the identity-making elements of the West challenge and change the identity of immigrants? What role do factors such as otherness, bilingualism, etc. play in shaping an individual's identity? The novel The Eye of the Horse consequently examines the relationship between the characters as symbols of the East and the West, as well as the suspension and consolidation of their identities in a Western-dominant environment. Based on the results of this study, the author has constructed an intermediate space in the novel that integrates both the decentered and the centered attitudes of East and West toward each other, as well as justifying the superiority of the West through the creation of linked subjects that constitute the identity of the teenage characters. As an introduction to the civilized world and globalization, he has also emphasized the naturalization and diminution of indigenous identities

Sufi (Women) in Ritual: An Embodied Experience of Selfhood

In Sufi Women, Embodiment, and the ‘Self’: Gender in Islamic Ritual, Jamila Rodrigues discusses the Sufi ritual hadra as an embodied experience of selfhood and religious symbolism. Taking the female members of the Naqshbandi community in Cape Town and Lefke as an ethnographic case study, the author considers – with mixed success – the gendered dimensions of the ritual. Ultimately, Rodrigues argues that hadra allows Sufi women not only to embody a pious identity, but also to learn about themselves through body movement expressions

Making Space for Light Industry: An Examination of Light Industry Integration through Mixed-use in Amsterdam's Transformation Areas

No full text
The presence of industry within the urban environment is gaining significant traction in a number of cities around the world. It’s growth and importance is fuelled by technology advancements that support both traditional local industry and advanced manufacturing. However, there is a lack of a vision and clear approach regarding industry in cities as well as competing interests for available space in urban environments. Since industry is typically considered as a weak land use, strategic efforts and strong interventions are required to ensure its presence in cities is retained and promoted within the urban fabric (Hill, 2020). This study focuses on examining the conditions that can influence the feasibility of integrating light industry when transforming industrial estates (bedrijventerreinen in Dutch) into new urban mixed-use districts in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. NDSM-Werf, a former shipyard situated on the northern banks of the IJ, is the chosen case study site. In this research, the scope of light industry covers a broad range of industrial and supporting activities that in theory can be incorporated in an urban mixed-use setting. The research methodology includes an extensive literature review, followed by empirical research that is made up of three main components: the Planning & Policy Dimension, the Stakeholder Dimension and the Spatial Dimension. The data collection methods used include documentation analysis in which a range of governmental and non-governmental documents were reviewed; semi-structured interviews with public, private, and third party stakeholders as well as experts; and additional desktop research where applicable. Outputs include the review of planning and policy processes, stakeholder mapping and a spatial analysis that involved the identification of City of Making (CoM) patterns derived from the Foundries of the Future book (Hill, 2020) using the case study site of NDSM-Werf. Main findings include the identification of six key conditions that were found critical to consider to integrating light industry in urban mixed-use developments of transformation areas in Amsterdam. Recommendations are provided at both the city level of Amsterdam and for the NDSM-Werf site in particular, directed at key stakeholders identified in the research. In addition, suggestions for further research into relevant topical areas are presented. Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Management in the Built Environmen

This chapter recounts the dramatic changes in the two women's lives that started in 2011 and were ongoing as of 2014. Because this narrative is a living document, whose ending will necessarily be arbitrary, it includes the sometimes dramatic shifts in plans and circumstances that can rewrite contemporary history in a moment. So it was that shifting events in late spring 2011 and early 2012 produced some different outcomes than what Marzia, Jamila, and the author had expected during their talks in the year before. For Marzia, the changes were more dramatic than her marriage. For Jamila, new circumstances confirmed both her fears about and her hopes for pursuing new options in her life's work.</p

Assessment of Cerebrovascular Reactivity inPatients with Brain Metastases

No full text
Introduction: Radiation is an effective treatment to increase overall mean survival of patients with metastatic brain tumours, however, damage to healthy tissue is inevitable. Radiation can cause dysfunction of the cerebrovasculature which is hypothesised to induce cognitive decline in patients after radiotherapy (RT). A new method, the cerebrovascular stress test, is able to visualise cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) which is the ability of the vessels to dilate after a vasoactive stimulus. Research suggests a link between reduced CVR and cognitive impairment in patients, however, current studies have not yet shown if CVR is reduced in patients with metastatic brain tumours. This thesis aims to assess CVR in patients with metastatic brain tumour at baseline and after RT. Methods: In this thesis, 13 patients with metastatic brain metastases were included and underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan with a vasoactive stimulus at baseline and three months after the same MRI-scan with stimulus. On the same day as the baseline MRI-scan, the patients received RT. CVR maps were calculated using the MRI-scan with the vasoactive stimulus. An additional computed tomography scan was obtained from each patient prior to their first MRI scan. All scanning data was brought into spatial correspondence with a developed image registration pipeline. After the scanning data was registered image analysis was performed using a VOI- and dose-based analysis. Results: The performance of the image registration pipeline was close to optimal for the MRI scans, and 69% for the baseline CT scan. The image analysis found a significant increase of CVR at an increasing distance from the tumour for white matter (WM) (p = 0.050). For grey matter (GM) and WM, a significant increase of CVR was found at 14 pixels away from the tumour in comparison to 2 pixels away from the tumour (WM: p = 0.039, and GM: p = 0.046). In the dose-based analysis, a nonsignificant decrease of mean CVR was found after RT. The decrease in CVR after RT did also not depend on the received dose. Conclusions: This thesis developed an image registration pipeline that can be used in further analysis with this specific patient group and scanning data. The image analysis showed an significant increase in CVR at a distance from the tumour for GM and WM. These results indicate that BM influences the CVR of these patients. However, no conclusions can be drawn based on the dose-based analysis. Additional research needs to be done to relate changes in CVR to cognitive decline in patients with metastatic brain tumours. The APRICOT studyBiomedical Engineering | Medical Physic
