An ABORT-like detector with improved mismatched signals rejection capabilities

    No full text
In this paper, we present a GLRT-based adaptive detection algorithm for extended targets with improved rejection capabilities of mismatched signals. We assume that a set of secondary data is available and that noise returns in primary and secondary data share the same statistical characterization. To increase the selectivity of the detector, similarly to the ABORT formulation, we modify the hypothesis testing problem at hand introducing fictitious signals under the null hypothesis. Such unwanted signals are supposed to be orthogonal to the nominal steering vector in the whitened observation space. The performance assessment, carried out by Monte Carlo simulation, shows that the proposed dectector ensures better rejection capabilities of mismatched signals than existing ones, at the price of a certain loss in terms of detection of matched signals

The work investigates the symbolic value of the flag in terms of its link with political values in the constitutional order. Given some general considerations, it turns to current analysis of the meaning of the flag in the Italian and European Union perspective

A closed-formula solution to the color-trace decomposition problem

    No full text
In these notes we present a closed-formula solution to the problem of decomposing traces of Lie algebra generators into symmetrized traces and structure constants. The solution is written in terms of Solomon idempotents and exploits a projection derived by Solomon in his work on the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem

Micro-organisms: everyday knowledge predates and contrasts with school knowledge

    No full text
Some ways of looking at – and seeing – micro-organisms by lower secondary school pupils (ranging in age from 11 to 14) have been singled out by means of the administration of a questionnaire and by encouraging pupils to reason out their answers. The study confirms the need to induce pupils to express their prior knowledge in order to improve teaching; allows the collection of a number of a very popular misconceptions (mould infecting food after it goes bad and why; micro-organisms travelling throughout the body and why; good and bad bacteria facing-off in combat in our body); and indicate mass media (mainly advertising spots and TV programmes) as pupils’ elective source of informations in the absence of any contribution at Italian school

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE 3D IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES APPLIED TO WATERLOGGED WOODEN ARTIFACTS FROM SHIPWRECKS

    No full text
The fragility of organic artefacts in presence of water and their volumetric variation caused by the marine life on or surrounding them dictate that their physical dimensions be measured soon after their extraction from the seabed. In an ideal context, it would be appropriate to preserve and restore all the archaeological elements, rapidly and with the latest methods. Unfortunately however, the large number of artefacts makes the cost of such an operation prohibitive for a public institution. For this reason, digital technologies for documentation, restoration, display and conservation are being considered by many institutions working with limited budgets. In this paper, we illustrate the experience of the University of Salento in 3D imaging technology for waterlogged wooden artefacts from shipwrecks. The interest originates from the need to develop a protocol for documentation and digital restoration of archaeological finds discovered along the coast of Torre S. Sabina (BR) Italy. This work has allowed us to explore recent technologies for 3D acquisitions, both underwater and in the laboratory, as well as methods for data processing. These technologies have permitted us to start defining a protocol to follow for all waterlogged wooden artefacts requiring documentation and restoration
