Aplication of Universal Desing for Learning to teach karst dissolution in a UNESCO Global Geopark
El presente trabajo se centra en la aplicación del Diseño Universal para el Aprendizaje (DUA) para la enseñanza de la disolución kárstica a estudiantes del tercer ciclo de Educación Primaria, en el marco de un Geoparque de Mundial de la UNESCO. A través de ello, se pretende destacar la importancia de los Geoparques como recursos valiosos en didáctica del medio natural, permitiendo que los estudiantes pueden desarrollar una mayor apreciación por nuestro patrimonio geológico y entender la necesidad de proteger y conservar estos recursos valiosos para las generaciones futuras.
A través de la experimentación en el aula y la aplicación de los principios del DUA, se han diseñado actividades educativas que enfatizan la diversidad del alumnado con variedad medios que facilitan el aprendizaje. Estas actividades están diseñadas para permitir a los estudiantes explorar y comprender de manera efectiva la karstificación que experimentan algunas rocas para dar lugar a cuevas kársticas.
La actividad principal de este trabajo consiste en la disolución de un bloque de sal en agua. Este experimento práctico permite a los estudiantes observar la formación de características geológicas que son similares a las encontradas en las regiones kársticas. A través de la observación directa y el análisis de los resultados, los estudiantes pueden identificar las características distintivas del karst y comprender los procesos geológicos que contribuyen a su formación.
Este trabajo proporciona una metodología innovadora para la enseñanza de la geología en el aula, utilizando los principios del DUA y el entorno único de Geoparque Montañas do Courel para fomentar un aprendizaje efectivo y significativo.This work focuses on the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to teach karst dissolution to Primary school students within the context of a UNESCO Global Geopark. This teaching highlights the value of geoparks as a valuable resource for environmental education, enabling students to develop a greater appreciation for our geological heritage and understand the need to protect and conserve these precious resources for future generations.
Through classroom experimentation and the application of UDL principles, educational activities have been designed that emphasize student diversity and facilitate learning through a variety of means. These activities are designed to allow students to effectively explore and understand the process of karstification, which transforms certain rocks into karst caves.
The main activity of this thesis involves the dissolution of a salt block in water. This practical experiment allows students to observe the formation of geological features similar to those found in karst regions. Through direct observation and analysis of the results, students can identify the distinctive features of karst and understand the geological processes that contribute to its formation.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Geomorfología y evolución de cuevas alpinas en los Picos de Europa, Cordillera Cantábrica(España)
Tesis con mención internacionalLas cuevas y el karst alpino presentan gran interés geomorfológico, paleoambiental e hidrogeológico, ya que su evolución está relacionada con el glaciarismo, el levantamiento del relieve y el descenso del nivel de base de los ríos. No obstante, el estudio de las cuevas alpinas es complejo debido principalmente a los problemas de acceso a ellas. Los Picos de Europa, con el 14 % de las simas más profundas del mundo, son idóneos para el estudio de las cuevas alpinas. Los objetivos de esta Tesis Doctoral son: (1) desarrollar y optimizar una metodología de trabajo para el estudio de las cuevas alpinas, y (2) construir un modelo evolutivo de las cuevas de los Picos de Europa en el contexto de la evolución pliocena-cuaternaria de estas montañas, analizando la influencia de las glaciaciones, litología, estructura geológica, acuífero kárstico y paleoclima en la espeleogénesis. El modelo se basa en el estudio de tres cuevas piloto que en total comprenden 7,7 km de conductos y representan el 1,9 % de las cuevas documentadas de los Picos de Europa. La metodología multidisciplinar combina de forma práctica técnicas de la espeleología, geomorfología, geocronología, geología estructural y estratigrafía, así como un Sistema de Información Geográfica donde representar toda la información espeleológica y científica a escala de macizo, cueva y conducto de cueva. De esta metodología, destacan los mapas geomorfológicos de las cuevas y del macizo kárstico, 26 dataciones U/Th, el nuevo método SpeleoDisc y la implementación de cuevas en el modelo hidrogeológico KARSYS. La geomorfología de las cuevas de los Picos de Europa se establece a partir de tres cuevas piloto que presentan entre 2,3-2,6 km de longitud y 215-247 m de profundidad. Estas cuevas están formadas por: 47 % de cañones y pozos vadosos, 45 % de niveles de cuevas situados a 1.238-1.275, 1.163-1.179 y 1.083-1.096 m de altitud, 7 % de pasajes modificados por gravedad, y 1 % de conductos soutirage. Las tres cuevas muestran un patrón ramificado de conductos que se clasifican en 5 grupos en función de su dirección e inclinación. El modelo espeleogenético señala que las cuevas de los Picos de Europa se originaron en, al menos, el Pleistoceno Medio, aunque su edad podría alcanzar el Plioceno. Las cuevas se formaron en un acuífero kárstico alpino multifase y fuertemente compartimentado, en relación a un descenso de 400 m del nivel freático en el caso de las cuevas piloto. La evolución de las cuevas se puede dividir en 6 fases. Fase 1: desarrollo de los niveles de cuevas en un karst cuyas aguas freáticas se dirigían hacia el SE, aflorando probablemente en la Garganta del Cares. Fase 2: comienzo del dominio de condiciones vadosas con desarrollo de los cañones y pozos vadosos y los principales procesos de gravedad, ya en un acuífero kárstico alpino y compartimentado cuya parte norte fue capturada por el Río Casaño. Fase 3. Relleno sedimentario de las cuevas durante 220-145 ka (MIS 7-6) por sedimentos fluviales y espeleotemas relacionados con la fusión glaciar y la erosión de rocas estefanienses. Fase 4. Vaciado de las cuevas durante 125-45 ka (MIS 5-3), con paleoinundaciones durante el MIS 5d relacionados con fusión glacial estival y el bloqueo temporal de las surgencias kársticas por los glaciares. Fase 5. Aparente pausa en la karstificación entre 45-25 ka (MIS 3-2) probablemente ligada a una mayor aridez y menor temperatura. Fase 6. Reactivación de la karstificación desde 25 ka (MIS 2-1) con desarrollo de espeleotemas ligado a un aumento de la temperatura y precipitaciones. El desarrollo de las cuevas estuvo condicionado por la estratificación y 7 familias de discontinuidades, la geometría y funcionamiento del acuífero kárstico, el Último Ciclo Glaciar, y el paleoclima durante el MIS 7-1
A GIS‑supported Multidisciplinary Database for the Management of UNESCO Global Geoparks: the Courel Mountains Geopark (Spain)
Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Granada/CBUA. The work was funded by the Courel Mountains UGGp.The management of a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) requires a vast wealth of miscellaneous scientific knowledge that
can be successfully organised using a Geographical Information System (GIS). This paper presents a pragmatic GIS database
to assist in the suitable governance of the Courel Mountains UGGp (2017) in Northwest Spain. The database is structured in
66 coverages compiled from public sources and previous works or produced through traditional mapping (combining fieldwork
and photointerpretation) and GIS tools. The acquired data was later homogenised and validated by a multidisciplinary
team and archived in independent coverages. Forty thematic maps illustrate the broad range of cartographic information
included in the GIS database. Among them, 25 basic maps provide an overview of the UGGp and 15 new maps focus on
crosscutting and technical issues. All maps illustrate the huge potential of GIS to create new resources combining coverages
and adapting the legend according to their purpose and audience. The database facilitates the suitable publishing of consistent
outputs (e.g., brochures, books, panels, webpages, web serves), as well as the elaboration of technical data to assist the
park management. The database furnishes information on the design of education actions, touristic routes, activities and
Geopark facilities. The GIS database is also a supportive tool for scientific research and provides the necessary knowledge
to conduct geoconservation actions based on land use, geological hazards and the occurrence of natural and cultural heritages.
Altogether, the GIS database constitutes a powerful instrument for policy-making, facilitating the identification and

Going with the flow: Sedimentary processes along karst conduits within Chalk aquifers, northern France
Sediment-filled caves, conduits and voids are common inmany karst regions. These voids and the sediment they
contain are important palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental archives, but often have an adverse impact on engineering
projects, mineral extraction and hydrogeology.Most studies into fluvial sedimentation in karst aquifers
have focussed on more traditional karst areas. However, the nature and extent of fluvial sedimentation within
caves and conduits in the important Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group aquifer (NW and Central Europe), and
their impacts are lesswell known. This is principally due to a lack of accessible Chalk caveswith exposed 3D sediment
archives for study. Fortunately, the discovery of the World's longest Chalk cave system by underground
quarrying at Caumont in the Seine valley near Rouen, northern France, has exposed numerous sediment sections
along 2.4 km of passage. Detailed analysis of the stratigraphy, mineralogy, sedimentology, provenance and the
chronology of the exposed sediments including the novel use of Gamma-ray spectrometry, reveals complex stratigraphy
and lateral facies distribution along a karst conduit. The depositional model comprises five
allostratigraphical units since the mid-Chibanian, separated by periods of erosion. The units are derived from
hyper-concentrated and sediment-laden flows, and include thalweg, channel, slackwater, backswamp
speleothem facies and debris flow deposits that are interbedded. Speleothems precipitated during MIS 7, 6, 5e
and 1. During MIS 7–6, detrital sediments filled almost all Chalk conduits, similar to other caves in the
European Atlantic Margin, coevally with the Penultima (Saalian) Glacial Cycle and a maximum of the Earth eccentricity.
Detrital sediments are derived from the erosion of local Chalk bedrocks as well as metamorphic and
igneous rocks of remote areas, such as Morvan massif and Massif Central. The depositional model is consistent
with the conception of the Chalk as a karst aquifer. Significant sediment aggradation caused upwards dissolution
(paragenesis), conduit occlusion and subsequent genesis of new conduits by flow diversion, potentially altering
the functioning of the chalk aquifer and the interpretation of Chalk hydrogeology (e.g., dye-tracing tests).PALECONOR project funded

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
