GJ: As far back as I can remember I wrote and wanted to write. When Monika Fludernik was going through my papers prior to writing her book about me, she came across a story in the Victoria College school magazine which I must have written when I was 13 or 14. I was shocked and amazed ..

The article presents the biography of Gabriel of Szadek and his work Apologia pro Collegii Posnaniensis, de Trino et Uno Deo assertionibus, adversus Samosatenicorum Anabaptistarum animadversions (1583), which was written in response to Poznan Jesuits’ pronouncement against Szymon Budny on the matter of Holy Trinity. The author also reminds the circumstances in which this work was printed and its further history

How, Twenty Years Ago, The George Eliot Fellowship Found Gabriel Woolf

Starting a new friendship is often a very chanoey business and none more so than the friendship which developed between The George Eliot Fellowship and one of its staunchest supporters, Gabriel Woolf. Gabriel\u27s recent 20th visit to Warwickshire to present his ann\J.al programme of Readings has reminded us how much of a fluke our finding him really was. In 1969 the Fellowship planned to mark the 150th anniversary of George Eliot\u27s birth with a week of celebrations in Nuneaton. We were then a very small society with a very inexperienced committee but, nothing daunted, we hoped to put the George Eliot Country on the literary map. Looking back after twenty years it is clear that our celebrations had a distinctly homespun look about them, and yet they were all immensely successful. One of the major events of the week was to be the opening of a special exhibition of George Eliot memorabilia in Nuneaton Museum, hopefully by an eminent person. The week was fast approaching and no-one had been found to perform the opening. It seemed that a golden opportunity to make this particular mark was going to be lost. One evening, quite late, the Fellowship secretary was taking a bath and was listening to the radio. Into the steamy atmosphere floated a beautiful voice reading, in the BBC Radio series \u27A Book at Bedtime\u27, Middlemarch. I cannot now believe that I had not earlier heard other episodes of the serialised reading; it was, after all, in an unprecedented 45 episodes, and I was in the first flush of my long term of office and up to my eyebrows in George Eliot\u27s anniversary. Perhaps my desperation had now reached such a state that I decided there and then to invite this actor with a wonderful voice to open our exhibition. After all, I thought to myself, although this is just a job of work to an actor he must have some feeling for the novel if he can read it so well and so sensitively. He may know little or nothing of its author. So desperate was I that this seemed not very significant. He would have to do! I was clutching at the proverbial straw, and the straw turned out to be Gabriel Woolf. In response to my invitation, Gabriel Woolf phoned me from London to accept with great pleasure. I was astonished to discover that not only did he love Middlemarch he also loved George Eliot and knew a great deal about her. Indeed, he had been commissioned by the BBC to write a radio portrait of her to mark the same 150th anniversary. The actor who \u27would do\u27 was an authority on the novelist and a devotee beyond our wildest hopes. We could not have chosen anyone more suitable for the occasion for, when he performed the opening ceremony in June 1969, he told his audience how he had fallen in love with George Eliot at first paragraph. To get some local colour for his radio portrait he stayed in the area for a few days and the friendship was sealed

Cambio de código, confianza y conexión: Cambio de código en la comedia de Gabriel Iglesias

    No full text
The author of this study presents a qualitative content analysis of Gabriel Iglesias’ use of code-switching within his comedy performances, specifically in two of his Netflix stand-up specials, “Gabriel Iglesias: I’m Sorry for What I Said When I Was Hungry” (2016) and “Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias: One Show Fits All” (2019). This study examines how Gabriel Iglesias asserts his authority as a Latinx performer to his primarily Spanish-speaking audience. In this analysis, I argue that the code-switching in Gabriel Iglesias’ comedy is an intentional act to build trust with the end goal of communicating humor with both his English-speaking and Spanish-speaking audiences. This study found that Gabriel Iglesias intentionally code-switches to Spanish in three distinct instances: when using personal idioms, to maintain authenticity in narratives, and when speaking directly to or about his audience

Composición y estilo en el canto I de la Historia de los amores de Abindarráez y Jarifa Abencerrajes, de Francesco Balbi da Correggio (1593)

The continuation of the Abencerraje published in Milan (1593) by Francesco Balbi da Correggio has been relegated to a marginal role in the studies related to Hispanic epic poetry or in the versions of the well-known Moorish novella; however, it probably deserves greater attention in order to review, partially at least, some critical judgments that have become widespread about this literary work. This article addresses some aspects related to its composition and style, in particular in the Chant I, which is significant for hosting relevant elements. It is observed how, together with a consolidated literary baggage of the Italian epic genre during the Renaissance (Ariosto), the author has also assimilated traditional Hispanic readings outside the praxis of contemporary epic authors

In the thirties, the Mediterranean spirit was a fashionable concept. Gabriel Audisio, author of Youth of Mediterranean Sea and Ulysses or intelligence, influenced an entire generation of young Algerian intellectuals and the most of all Albert Camus, who writes : «My heart is naturally Greek. » In every aspect of the life and work of Camus, we find Greece, her ideas, her gods and often Homer's thems.Negli anni trenta, lo spirito mediterraneo è un concetto alla moda. Absorbing new subjects: holography as an analog of photography

    No full text
I discuss the early history of holography and explore how perceptions, applications, and forecasts of the subject were shaped by prior experience. I focus on the work of Dennis Gabor (1900–1979) in England,Yury N. Denisyuk (b. 1924) in the Soviet Union, and Emmett N. Leith (1927–2005) and Juris Upatnieks (b. 1936) in the United States. I show that the evolution of holography was simultaneously promoted and constrained by its identification as an analog of photography, an association that influenced its assessment by successive audiences of practitioners, entrepreneurs, and consumers. One consequence is that holography can be seen as an example of a modern technical subject that has been shaped by cultural influences more powerfully than generally appreciated. Conversely, the understanding of this new science and technology in terms of an older one helps to explain why the cultural effects of holography have been more muted than anticipated by forecasters between the 1960s and 1990s

Batorego 15 41-902 Bytom Keywords: leukotriene E4, infants, allergy, urine. Summary Objective LTE4 is the end point of cysLTs pathway and its only stable product. Its role was discussed in asthma and AEDS. We aimed to investigate the impact of genetic and environmental factors ( sex, maternal positive family atopy history, breastfeeding, passive smoking and pet exposure ). 60 newborns ( including 30 boys ) were enrolled in the study. Each child was examined at 12 months and urine samples for urinary LTE4 measurement were collected. All samples were processed using ACETM Enzyme Immunoassay Kit ( Cayman Chemical, Ann Arbor, MI, USA ). The mean level of urinary LTE4 at 12 months was 186,99 pg/ml ( median: 159,0; CI 95%: 157,79- 221,59 ). The Shapiro- Wilk test showed that the distribution of the levels of urinary LTE4 were abnormal. 12- month- old girls had higher urinary LTE4 levels than boys ( mean: 270,50 vs. 193,55 ), but maternal positive atopy history, pet exposure, tobacco smoking or length of breastfeeding had no impact on urinary LTE4 excretion. Conclusions In conclusion, most of genetic or environmental factors do not change levels of urinary LTE4 in infants
