    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Genética e Melhoramento de PlantasNos últimos anos, várias metodologias têm sido empregadas no intuito de avaliar o desempenho de híbridos de milho. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar qual o potencial do melhor preditor linear não viciado (BLUP) e das distâncias genéticas na predição de híbridos de milho. Foram utilizadas noventa progênies S0:2 provenientes de três populações oriundas de três híbridos simples comerciais. Utilizaram-se 30 progênies da população A (híbrido 30F45), 31 da população B (híbrido Dow 657) e 29 da população C (DKB333B). Todas as 90 progênies foram genotipadas com 25 marcadores de microssatélites (SSR), sendo 9 dessas marcas ligadas à QTL para produtividade de grãos. A partir das análises moleculares, foram obtidas as similaridades genéticas e o parentesco, empregando-se a distância modificada de Roger e o coeficiente de Lynch e Ritland, respectivamente. Com base nas similaridades genéticas, foram selecionadas 17 linhagens que foram intercruzadas em um sistema de dialelo parcial, com o objetivo de recuperar os cruzamentos mais e menos divergentes. Assim, foram avaliados 60 híbridos em dois locais em látice triplo 8x8. Também foram utilizados os resultados de similaridade e parentesco para a construção da matriz genética aditiva e de dominância que, posteriormente, foram empregadas em associação com o BLUP, para a predição dos valores genotípicos e da CEC dos híbridos não avaliados. Para isso, foram simulados cinco graus de desbalanceamento (5, 10, 20, 30 e 40). Os valores de similaridades genéticas também foram utilizados na predição dos híbridos, ou seja, correlacionaram-se as DMR com a produtividade, CEC e heterose dos híbridos avaliados. Para teste de significância da correlação entre DMR com a produtividade utilizou-se um teste empírico via simulação Monte Carlo. Neste estudo, foi observado que 71% dos híbridos interpopulacionais apresentaram desempenho superior aos híbridos genitores (30F45, Dow657 e DKB333B). Além disso, observou-se que as distâncias genéticas apresentaram média capacidade preditiva da produtividade (0,546), da capacidade de combinação (0,567) e da heterose (0,661). A simulação Monte Carlo apresentou-se como uma alternativa viável para teste de correlação entre distâncias genética e produtividade, principalmente por verificar se o tamanho da amostra utilizado para estudo de correlação é adequado. No que se refere às predições utilizando o BLUP, pode-se observar que os valores de correlações entre os valores genotípicos preditos e as médias observadas variaram de 0,55 a 0,70, dependendo do grau de desbalanceamento. Resultado semelhante foi observado para as predições da CEC, ou seja, variaram de 0,61 a 0,70. Além disso, constatou-se que o coeficiente de parentesco de Lynch e Ritland associado ao BLUP proporcionou predições mais acuradas, quando comparado às predições obtidas pela similaridade no estado, estimada pela distância modificada de Roger. O método (BLUP) demonstrou ser uma alternativa viável na predição de cruzamentos não realizados, porém, sua eficácia é maior quando coeficientes de similaridade adequados são utilizados para a construção da matriz de parentesco.In the last years, several methodologies have been used to predict the untested maize hybrids performance. Thus, the aim of this work was to ascertain the potential of the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and the genetic distance in the prediction of maize hybrids performance. Ninety S0:2 progenies from three populations of three single cross hybrids were utilized being thirty progenies from population A (P30F45 hybrid), thirty-one from population B (DOW657 hybrids) and twenty-nine from population C. The ninety progenies were genotyped with twenty-five SSR markers, with nine QTL's markers linked to grain yield. Starting from the molecular analysis, the genetic similarities and the relationship were obtained by Roger's modified distance and the Lynch and Ritland coefficient respectively. Based on the genetic similarities, 17 progenies were selected and crossed in a partial diallel design, to recover the must and least divergent crosses. Thus, sixty hybrids were evaluated in two environments using 8x8 lattice design with three replications. The similarity and relationship results were used to construct additive and dominance matrixes that were utilized in association with BLUP for prediction of the untested maize hybrids. Five unbalanced degrees were simulate (5, 10, 20, 30 and 40).The genetic similarities values were also used for hybrids predictions, in other words, they were correlated with yield, SCA and heterosis of the appraised hybrids. For significance test of correlation among DMR and yield, the Monte Carlo empirical test was applied. In this study it was observed that 71% of the interpopulation hybrids showed superior performance in relation to the parental hybrids (30F45, Dow657 e DKB333B). In addition, it was observed that the genetic distances presented a medium capacity to predict yield (0.546), specific combining ability (0.567) and heterosis (0.661).The Monte Carlo simulation demonstrated to be a viable alternative for correlation test between genetic distance and yield, mainly for verifying if the sample size is suitable. Considering the BLUP predictions, it can be observed that the correlations between the genotypic values predicted and the phenotypic means varied from 0.55 to 0.70 depending on the unbalanced degree. Similar results were observed for the SCA predictions, which varied from 0.61 to 0.70. Besides, it was verified that the Lynch and Ritland coefficient associated with BLUP provided more accurate predictions when compared to the similarity in state predictions estimated by the Roger's modified distance. Thus, it is possible to infer that BLUP methodology demonstrated to be a viable alternative to predict the performance of untested hybrids, however, this efficiency is larger when appropriate similarity coefficients are used to construct the relationship matrix

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
