Tra tarda antichità e medioevo: un nuovo progetto archeologico per la villa del Casale di Piazza Armerina
The collection, curation, analysis, and recontextualization of archaeological legacy data from the Roman villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina
(EN) in their relation to the wider Mediterranean guide the research initiated in 2021. The new project was inaugurated by an agreement
between the Archaeological Park of Morgantina and the Roman Villa del Casale of Piazza Armerina and the University of Bologna,
under the umbrella of CISEM (Interuniversity Center for Studies on Late Antique Housing in the Mediterranean), and collaborations with
the CNR-ISPC, the University of Enna “Kore” and the University of South Florida’s Institute for Digital Exploration.
In the western area of the villa, two excavation campaigns were carried out in 2022 and 2023 as part of an international Summer School
that involved students and teachers from the University of Athens, Bologna, Cyprus, Krakow, Oviedo, Seville, the Peloponnese,
Stockholm, and Wroclaw, as well as the University of South Florida. New geophysical investigations were carried out in addition to the
excavation and study of archaeological materials. This new research serves as the starting point for the curation of all previous textual
and material documentation, which will be managed in a digital environment to further develop the site in accordance with the principles
of protecting and transmitting cultural heritage to future generations
Yet Another Populist Party? Understanding the Rise of Brothers of Italy
From its 2012 beginnings as a marginal radical right splinter group, in the 2022 general election 'Fratelli d'Italia' (Brothers of Italy, FdI) was the most voted party and its leader, Giorgia Meloni, became the first Italian female Prime minister. While both leader and party can be classified as belonging to the populist radical right family, we argue that FdI must be understood also as a 'rooted newcomer', i.e. a party that can count on pre-existing organisational resources, building its appeal also on symbolic elements already familiar to the electorate when the party was formed. Focusing on the supply side, we tackle some of the main open questions related to the party's ambivalent nature, often fluctuating between a post-fascist profile and a frequently reiterated support for other European radical right illiberal leaders and more moderate positions. We identify the politics of illiberalism as the key challenge the party faces in its transition from opposition to government
Bone defects healing by hyaluronic acid: preliminary results.
Aim. The aim of this study is to evaluate the capability ofHyalossTM matrix (Fab – Fidia Advanced Biopolymers –Pd – Italy), a biomaterial based on hyaluronic acid, usedas organic scaffold in bone repair in post-extractive defects.Materials and methods: 20 post-extractive sockets wereselected, with similar size defects in the same patientand in the same hemiarch. Hyaluronic acid with high molecularweight (HyalossTM matrix, Fab – Pd – Italy) wasmixed with autologous bone obtained using Safescraper® curve (Meta – Re – Italy) to repair post-extractivesites. Safescraper® is a cutting edge system thatallows to the collection of autologous bone withoutusing traditional, incision-based collection techniques, which could cause discomfort to the patient. Results: Clinical and hystological evaluations were performed, four months after grafting, in the maxilla and inthe mandible. From a clinical point of view HyalossTMmatrix mixed with autologous bone and patient’s bloodbecomes a substance similar to gel, which is easy to insertin to the defect. From a hystological point of view, inthe treated site there is the presence of an erosive activity, with accelerated angiogenetic and bone remodellingactivities. Conclusions: The preliminary results show an accelerationof the bone deposit process and of its remodellingdue to the presence of HyalossTM matrix, which, from a clinical point of view, improves the handling and applicationof the bone matrix inside the defects and, from ahystologic point of view makes it possible to obtainbone regeneration in less time when it is used with autologousbone
Different shades of leadership A comparative assessment of leaders’ traits in explaining the vote for Populist Radical Right parties
Populist Radical Right parties (PRR) have gained prominence in many European countries, with leadership often considered a key factor in their electoral success. Despite this, limited research has explored how voters’ perceptions of leaders’ traits influence support for PRR parties. This study delves into the impact of perceived leaders’ traits on the vote for PRR parties, using original survey data collected during recent general elections in six European countries (Italy 2022, France 2017, Germany 2017, Austria 2017, UK 2017, Netherlands 2017). Combining descriptive findings and regression analyses, our results reveal three key insights: (1) Voters differentiate among leaders’ traits, with the influence of each trait varying across different party types; (2) the effect of leader’s perceptions on all traits is significant also after taking into account party identification; (3) PRR parties are particularly adept at attracting voters based on positive assessments of leaders’ strength and empathy, more so than other party types
Exploring the political culture of Fratelli d’Italia with a novel middle-level elite survey
We introduce a novel dataset derived from a comprehensive survey targeting both elite and middle-level elites of Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia, FdI), the most-voted party in the Italian 2022 general elections and whose leader, Giorgia Meloni, is currently holding the office of Prime Minister. The dataset encompasses various aspects, including socio-demographic characteristics, prior political experience, motivations for joining the party, attitudes towards several political issues and institutions, policy preferences and populist orientation. Several questions have identical wording to those in recent mass surveys, facilitating comparisons between FdI elites, FdI voters and the broader Italian population. After detailing the fieldwork and main features of the sample, we illustrate potential uses of the dataset, such as examining the ideological cohesion of the party and the populist attitudes of its elites and voters
Housing policy toward the rental sector in Italy: a distributive assessment
We study the distributive effects on Italian households of the three most relevant housing subsidies targeted to renters: a national rent supplement scheme introduced in the context of the reform that liberalised the rental market in the late 1990s, a tax credit for renters that has been recently strengthened, and the implicit economic support given to tenants in the social housing sector, through below-market rents. The analysis is performed on data from the Eu-Silc survey for Italy and, in the case of the housing allowances, also on register data from some of the largest Italian towns. We consider in particular the ability of these schemes to target low income households and their effects on the overall levels of poverty and inequality. Results from our analysis show a good targeting but very limited effect on social protection, with the partial exception of social housing.housing policy, housing benefits, social housing, tax credit, poverty, Italy.
