Comparing three possible hypoelliptic Laplacians on the 5-dimensional Cartan group via div-curl type estimates

On general Carnot groups, the definition of a possible hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacian on forms using the Rumin complex has been considered in (M. Rumin, “Differential geometry on C-C spaces and application to the Novikov-Shubin numbers of nilpotent Lie groups,” C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris Sér. I Math., vol. 329, no. 11, pp. 985–990, 1999, M. Rumin, “Sub-Riemannian limit of the differential form spectrum of contactmanifolds,” Geom. Funct. Anal., vol. 10, no. 2, pp. 407–452, 2000), where the author introduced a 0-order pseudodifferential operator on forms. However, for questions regarding regularity for example, where one needs sharp estimates, this 0-order operator is not suitable. Up to now, there have only been very few attempts to define hypoelliptic Hodge- Laplacians on forms that would allow for such sharp estimates. Indeed, this question is rather difficult to address in full generality, the main issue being that the Rumin exterior differential dc is not homogeneous on arbitrary Carnot groups. In this note, we consider the specific example of the free Carnot group of step 3 with 2 generators, and we introduce three possible definitions of hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacians.We compare how these three possible Laplacians can be used to obtain sharp div-curl type inequalities akin to those considered by Bourgain & Brezis and Lanzani & Stein for the de Rham complex, or their subelliptic counterparts obtained by Baldi, Franchi & Pansu for the Rumin complex on Heisenberg groups

A theoretical analysis of the Power of Biased Coin Designs

    No full text
Outlining some recently obtained results of Hu and Rosenberger [2003. Optimality, variability, power: evaluating responseadaptive randomization procedures for treatment comparisons. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 98, 671–678] and Chen [2006. The power of Efron’s biased coin design. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 136, 1824–1835] on the relationship between sequential randomized designs and the power of the usual statistical procedures for testing the equivalence of two competing treatments, the aim of this paper is to provide theoretical proofs of the numerical results of Chen [2006. The power of Efron’s biased coin design. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 136, 1824–1835]. Furthermore, we prove that the Adjustable Biased Coin Design [Baldi Antognini A., Giovagnoli, A., 2004. A new “biased coin design” for the sequential allocation of two treatments. J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. C 53, 651–664] is uniformly more powerful than the other “coin” designs proposed in the literature for any sample size

Calvino's Invisible Cities in the Netherlands and Flanders:(In)visibilities in translation and reception

“Calvino’s Invisible Cities in the Netherlands and Flanders: (in)visibilities in Translation and Reception” by Elio Baldi and Linda Pennings traces the reception of Invisible Cities through its (marginal) presence in literary manuals, other writers’ engagements with the book through paratextual reference and parody, and an analysis of the only published translation in Dutch (1981). Academic discussion and critical readings of Invisible Cities have remained relatively scarce, though it is Calvino’s most popular book in terms of the reading public with roughly one reprint every year. Writers demonstrate their appreciation for Calvino via their paratextual homage and occasional (subtle) dialogue with Calvino’s city descriptions, and these engagements indicate which parts of the book most actively resonate with Flemish and Dutch readers. Analysis of the translation shows that many of the stylistic qualities of the original which have a clear semantic role (rhythms, symmetries, repetitions, chiasms, alliterations, the poetic concision of the work) are not sufficiently rendered in the existing translation and, as a consequence, do not reach the Dutch reader, explaining the absence of discussion of these meaningful formal aspects of Calvino’s work in Dutch-language criticism

A Framework for Rapid Development and Portable Execution of Packet-Handling Applications

    No full text
This paper presents a framework that enables the execution of packet-handling applications (such as sniffers, firewalls, intrusion detectors, etc.) on different hardware platforms. This framework is centered on the NetVM - a novel, portable, and efficient virtual processor targeted for packet-based processing - and the NetPDL - a language dissociating applications from protocol specifications. In addition, a high-level programming language that enables rapid development of packet-based applications is presented

Simple simulation schemes for cir and Wishart processes

    No full text
We develop some simple simulation algorithms for CIR and Wishart processes. We investigate rigorously the square of a matrix valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, the main idea being to split the generator and to reduce the problem to the simulation of the square of a matrix valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process to be added to a deterministic process. In this way, we provide a weak second-order scheme that requires only the simulation of i.i.d. Gaussian r.v.'s and simple matrix manipulations
