Background and Objectives: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is important to measure as it is an indication of outcome after stroke. Our objectives were to assess HRQOL in patients 3 months after stroke and to identify factors that predict HRQOL in stroke survivors. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 67 first-ever stroke patients hospitalized in the Ministry of Health Ankara Diskapi Yildirim Beyazit Education and Research Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic. HRQOL was measured by means of the Stroke Impact Scale-16 (SIS-16). Patients were characterized by age, sex, duration of education, comorbidities, stroke type, affected side, concordance (pa-retic arm=dominant hand), cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]), and functional status (Functional Independence Measure [FIM]). We used a linear regression model to examine the influence of de-mographic and clinical characteristics on the different SIS-16 domains. Results: The mean (SD) for age of the 67 patients was 62.03 (13.22) years (range, 33 to 81 years). The MMSE and FIM scores were significantly correlated with the SIS-16 score (P< .001). Linear regression analysis showed that age and functional status were the major independent determinants affecting HRQOL (P=.002 and P< .001,respectively). Conclusion: In this study, we found that age and functional status had a powerful influence on HRQOL. Comprehensive therapy programs aimed to improve HRQOL should focus on improving functional disability, particularly in older stroke patients. There is a need for long-term follow-up studies in stroke patients throughout all recovery stages to evaluate HRQOL in more detail

Explicit Intertextual Connections in Driscoll’s Her Perfect Family: A Reader-Centric Analysis

    No full text
This study examines explicit intertextuality and its impact on the reader in Teresa Driscoll’s crime novel, Her Perfect Family, published in late 2021. Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality stands as a significant milestone in postmodernist literature, positing that any new text is inevitably influenced or enriched by prior writings. British author Driscoll employs explicit intertextuality throughout the work, incorporating references to renowned English writers such as George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, D.H. Lawrence, Mary Shelley, and Lewis Carroll in various chapters. As a result, the reader perceives a connection between these authors and the chapters, contributing to the overall reading experience. It becomes evident that Driscoll, as a contemporary postmodernist novelist, draws from the themes and characters of these established literary figures to enhance the intricacies of her plot. By providing clues and insights relevant to the contemporary context, the author cleverly weaves explicit intertextual references into the narrative, engaging readers in a process akin to solving a puzzle, and creating connections. Moreover, Driscoll assumes the role of an instructor, posing critical questions about the aforementioned acclaimed authors, their works, and their characters. This approach makes the reader feel like a student, encouraging them to establish intertextual connections in Her Perfect Family and to understand the plot more easily

In this thesis we will be analysing a film by Iztok Kovač and Sašo Podgoršek titled Vertigo Bird. Through semiotics we are trying to understand structures of movement and their meaning which is to be sought in a interdisciplinary anner. The author first sets the setting of the film, which is the mining town of Trbovlje. Many of the dance scenes are filmed in mining infrastructures, e. g. workers\u27 changing rooms, bathroom facilities or a pool. Furthermore, the author then tries to understand dance through anthropological concepts and definitions. These emphasize the meaning of cultural systems from which meanings of dance in certain cultures greatly differ. The author analyses this through semiotics and Barthes\u27 theories of cultural codes and different approaches to analysis. Originally, Kovač created the Vertigo Bird as a theathre performance which is another aspect we are trying to understand in the analysis. The theories which are being used inn the analysis throughout this study are altterly applied to the film as a whole. An interdisciplinary approach is crucial when analyzing meaning and structures in films such as Vertigo Bird, as their content and all of its underlying messages could not be understood in depth with a unilateral view

Diploma paper deals with the question of validity of guarantee agreement between the contracting parties. The author is focused primarily on the validity of the obligation of a particular guarantor – all this is done on a case study, a concluded credit agreement between the lender and the customer and at the same time a guarantee agreement between the creditor and the four guarantors. A concluded contractual relationship and the characteristic of these relationships, as dictated by the legislature and practice, are analyzed in the first part. The adequacy of conduct of the parties is also evaluated here. An essential part of the diploma work is presented in the second part, which is mainly focused on the guarantee institution and the objections of the guarantor, which are selected and suitable according to the given situation and are also theoretically substantiated. For the analysis of the described contractual relationship the author makes use of the current legislation under which she seeks to establish the validity of guarantor’s commitment to the creditor.

AbstractAim of the workThe purpose of this study was to investigate the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) characteristics, functional capacity, depression and anxiety as well as quality of life (QoL) in RA patients with chronic radicular low back and leg pain diagnosis which was determined by using electroneuromyographic (ENMG) evaluation.Patients and methodsIn this study, 32 female RA patients with radicular low back and leg pain for at least 3months were recruited. Electroneuromyographic (ENMG) evaluation was performed in all patients and accordingly grouped: group 1: normal ENMG (n=7; 22%), group 2: patients with polyneuropathy (n=8; 25%) and group 3: patients with radiculopathy (n=17; 53%). Disease activity was assessed by disease activity score (DAS28) and functional disability by modified Health Assessment Questionnaire (mHAQ). Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale-2 was used to assess QoL and Beck Inventory for assessment of anxiety and depression.ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 54.7±10.3years and disease duration 14.9±8.3years. The DAS-28 and functional disability were significantly increased (p=0.005 and p=0.01) in group-2 compared to the other groups. There were no significant differences in the depression and anxiety scores among the 3 groups. Significantly impaired QoL parameters (Hand-finger function, arm function, social activity and pain) were present in the polyneuropathy group. There was no difference in assessment parameters between the normal and radiculopathy groups.ConclusionsChronic radicular low back and leg pain in patients with RA may be due to probable lumbar radiculopathy as well as an indicator for polyneuropathy

The present study focuses on the intertextual similarities in Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane in comparison with Caryl Churchill’s Vinegar Tom. In any case, the primary objective of this intertextual analysis is not to demonstrate that McDonagh benefited from Churchill's Vinegar Tom. Indeed, Churchill and McDonagh are well-loved playwrights who will always maintain their places among the original authors of world literature. Intertextuality as a literary theory, started to be applied in academic studies after a claim made by Julia Kristeva in 1966. In Kristeva’s viewpoint, every newly written work is a blend of previous works. According to the intertextual theory, authors rewrite other texts by incorporating them into their own work. Since their general culture and knowledge consist of various events up to that point, the authors conduct the intertextual process unconsciously. Furthermore, when analysing two or more texts, the reader becomes the critic during the intertextual interpretation. In this sense, while each reader comes from a different cultural background, they will find different similarities between texts. As a result, in intertextual interpretation, the reader engages in a completely original process. McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane staged in 1996, is resembled both to Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Psycho and Quentin Tarantino films by critics. However, even though their plots are completely different, I strongly believe that McDonagh’s play is similar to Caryl Churhill’s Vinegar Tom that was performed twenty years earlier. In this framework, the main characters Alice and Joan in Churchill’s play display similarities with Maureen and Mag in McDonagh’s work that was staged twenty years later. It presents the sense that Churchill's main characters have aged twenty years in McDonagh's play. Another parallel is that both plays take place in rural areas. Poverty as a prominent theme is a further parallelism in both plays. Structured Abstract: The current study compares Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane to Caryl Churchill's Vinegar Tom for intertextual similarities. After Julia Kristeva's claim in 1966, intertextuality as a literary theory began to be used in academic studies. Every newly written work, according to Kristeva, is a combination of previous works. In any case, the primary objective of this intertextual analysis is not to demonstrate that McDonagh benefited from Churchill's Vinegar Tom. The reader, as a critic, makes comments in a new text they are reading by comparing it to previous texts they have read before. As a result, the reader engages in a completely unique process of intertextual interpretation. Critics have resembled McDonagh's 1996 production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane to both Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho and Quentin Tarantino films. Despite the fact that their plots are completely different, I believe that McDonagh's play is pretty similar to Caryl Churhill's Vinegar Tom, which was performed twenty years before. In their plays, both Churchill and McDonagh employ short sentences as spoken language, resulting in a natural expression. Over the course of more than half a century, Churchill, one of the greatest living British playwrights, has produced significant, impactful, and deeply committed work. She has written around fifty plays, each of which presents a unique creative challenge. Churchill addresses to moral issues in her stage plays and favours a feminist-socialist viewpoint. As a result, her plays frequently focus on issues of identity reflection, and personal preservation. The playwright handles a progressive and intriguing style to depict these struggles. Vinegar Tom is one of Churchill's most feminist and socialist works, having debuted in 1976. The play is divided into twenty-one scenes and tells the story of four women accused of witchcraft. At the conclusion of the play, which takes place in the seventeenth century, two of these women are executed. The other two women were eagerly awaiting their hanging at the finale of the play. During the writing of the play, Churchill admits that the book Witches, Midwives and Nurses by Deirdre English and Barbara Ehrenreich had a strong influence on her. Churchill employs postmodern techniques in Vinegar Tom to undermine women's roles in society and to question traditional and social beliefs about them by revealing their suffering throughout history. In this regard, the play attempts to depict the relationship between medieval mentalities toward witches and women in a patriarchal society. Churchill also tries to demonstrate the position of poor, single, and elderly women in the seventeenth century, as well as how they were perceived as victims. Martin McDonagh, an Irish-born Londoner, began his professional theatre career when he was twenty-six years old. Although there are not many plays written by McDonagh, the prizes for these works are plentiful. Apart from theatre, the author is also a filmmaker, having even won an Oscar for his movie Six Shooter in 2006. The Beauty Queen of Leenane, McDonagh's first play, was staged in 1996 and is divided into nine scenes. The play follows Maureen, a daughter, and her mother, Mag, who live together. When Maureen falls in love for the first time, she is deceived by her mother who is killed by the daughter at the end of the play. McDonagh’s later works contain the similar physical violence that we have noticed in his first play. The first striking parallel between the two plays is that the characters in Vinegar Tom and The Beauty Queen of Leenane are similar. Both Churchill's and McDonagh's plays portray parallel personalities, but the main characters in The Beauty Queen have slightly more money than those in Vinegar Tom. The protagonists in Churchill's play, Alice and Joan, have a tense daughter-mother relationship. The main characters in The Beauty Queen are Maureen and Mag, who also have a stormy daughter-mother relatio
