The Confederate Graves Survey Archive of the Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans consists of surveys of cemeteries throughout Texas, and portions of Oklahoma and New Mexico. The surveys document the interment of Confederate States of America military veterans. United States of America (Union) veterans, as well as able-bodied men at the time of the Civil War, are also documented. 13 boxes entitled "Grave Surveys" contain grave surveys listed county-by-county, 3 boxes of "Unit Files" list surveyed individuals by their military unit. Finally, 17 boxes contain "Veteran Files" that document each veteran by name in "last name, first name, middle initial" format. An index that cross-references each of the collection series (Grave Surveys, Unit Files, and Veteran Files) is included, as are institutions to surveyors on how and what to document while conducting surveys.Rose Hill Cemetery #165, Merkel, Taylor County, Texas | Veterans Interred: Wilson, Charles N.S. The disposal of the property of monastic houses, with a special study of Holy Trinity Aldgate.
PhDThis thesis is a study of the disposal by the Crown of the
monastic property in the city of London and its suburbs which came
into royal possession at the dissolution of the houses concerned.
The period covered extends from 1532, the year in which the first
London house was dissolved, to the death of Henry VIII in 1547, by
which date the bulk of the property had been alienated; but
occasional reference is made to subsequent transactions. The property
studied comprises that of both monasteries situated in London and.
those elsewhere in England, and while attention is focussed upon
land and buildings used for secular purposes the disposal of monastic
sites and of spiritual income receives some notice.
The results of the investigation are presented in two parts,
one particular and the other general. Part I, a detailed study of
the first house to be dissolved, the priory of Holy Trinity, Aldgate,
includes, besides four chapters dealing with the Crown's management
and disposal of its property, three others furnishing a background to
its surrender and examining the surrender itself. In these some light
is thrown upon the circumstances and motives of the episode, including
the roles of Cromwell and Audley. Part II begins with a survey of all
monastic property in the area and an estimate of its annual value.
Succeeding chapters examine three aspects of the processes of disposals
the purchase of large quantities of the property by operators on a large
scale, and, where known, its subsequent handling by them; the transfer,
by gift or lease, of many smaller parcels to servants and officers of
the Crown; and the impact of such transactions upon a single London
parish, that of St. Mary le Bow
Robert Buchanan 1841-1901: an assessment of his career.
PhDRobert Buchanan was widely regarded during his
lifetime as a poet of distinction, a capable and powerful
novelist, and a critic of some perception, yet his name is
now associated only with one regrettable episode, while
those of lesser men and women continue to be remembered for
work inferior to his. A man possessing large reserves of
energy, and pressed to write for a living at an early age,
he produced much work that deserves the oblivion it has
found; but his early verse, expressing his profound compassion
for the sufferings of the unfortunate in the simplest
language, some of his ballads, and not a little of his
later more vatic verse, is still worthy of study. As a
novelist his work is provocative and readable, but too
often descends to the level of the sentimental melodrama
which earned him, for a while, a very good income from the
stage. As a critic he was not profound, but was quick to
detect and praise expression of his own sympathy for humanity
that came to represent for him art's highest aspiration;
Dickens, Browning and Whitman were his heroes, and for the
last two he did sterling work in helping them to gain widespread
recognition. As a polemist he rushed into several
arenas, for some of which his talents were not especially
suited; but he publicly supported C. S. Parnell and Oscar
Wilde when few found the courage to do so. An interesting
man of impressive variety and undoubted talent has found an
undeserved neglect, and a full-scale critical biography of
Robert Buchanan is long overdue
