Marine landscapes and habitars of Cilento Geopark (Italy) - linking geo- and biodiversity using a multiscalar approach.

The Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni Geopark Administration appointed the Geological Survey of Italy (ISPRA), in collaboration with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the University “Parthenope” of Naples (DISAM), to map the seascapes off Cilento down to a depth of 100 m, as part of the official Geological Map of the Park. The map was realized at 1:110,000 scale for the entire Geopark, covering a marine area of 460 square kilometers, up to a depth of 100 m. A detailed map of the marine protected area “Santa Maria di Castellabate” was produced at 1:30,000 scale. The seafloor was described according to a classification based on geomorphology, geological composition, and dominant organisms. The cartographic representation is largely based on the morphological features derived by a detailed bathymetry, completed using geological seabed data compiled by the Italian Geological Mapping Project at 1:50,000 scale (CARG Project). Complementary biological data were collected by Remotely Operated Vehicle inspections. Morphological features have been subdivided into seven geoforms (bank, ridge, fan, plain, ledge, terrace, boulder field/rock) that, coupled with substrate types and dominant biota, identified 12 landscape units in the 1:100,000 map, whereas they resulted in 14 habitat units in the 1:30,000 map. This study highlights the relevance of geophysical and geological data for the interpretation of benthic habitat characteristics at different scales. The approach is aimed at emphasizing the strict relationship between geodiversity and biodiversity

Benthic Habitat Variations Over Tidal Ridges, North Sea, The Netherlands

    No full text
Marine ecosystems on continental shelves endure an increasing burden of human activity offshore, and the impacts on benthic habitats are not well known. An improved understanding of how benthic habitats vary in relation to substrate types and seabed features is therefore essential to both scientists and offshore developers. This case study shows that marine habitats over two tidal ridges in the North Sea vary from low-density/low-diversity communities on the well-sorted sandy crests of ridges to high-density/high-diversity communities in the poorly sorted muddy, gravelly sediments in the adjacent troughs. On sandy continental shelves, including the Netherlands Continental Shelf (NCS) in the North Sea, tidal bedforms occur of different spatial scales, such as sand banks (tidal ridges), sand waves, and megaripples. Marine habitat maps reveal that benthic habitats vary spatially on continental shelves in relation to seabed morphology, water depth, and sediment composition. The different morphological elements of tidal ridges are expected to accommodate different benthic habitats. Some tidal ridge areas in the North Sea are nominated to become marine protected areas, but are also attractive for their marine aggregates and may be designated in part as mining areas. Due to their composition and shallow water depths, tidal ridges are also suitable locations for the construction of offshore wind farms. To date, the characteristics of relatively inaccessible seabeds are too poorly understood to explain the effects of physical parameters on benthic communities. Therefore, it is important to expand our understanding of benthic habitat variations associated with tidal ridges, for the benefit of both science and offshore development. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Geomorphology and benthic habitats of the Kermadec Trench, SW Pacific Ocean

    No full text
The Kermadec Trench, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, is ~1195 km long, 120 km wide, ~10,000 m deep, and accounts for 3.6% of the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone. Formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Australian Plate, the trench exhibits steep adjacent slopes, that, north of 32°S on the underriding plate, can exceed 40 degrees due to an extensive network of fault escarpments up to 1000 m in height and that are laterally extensive over many tens of kilometers. General oceanographic conditions and the characteristics of the fault escarpments, the deep trench axis, and the north (Osborn Seamount) and south (Hikurangi Trough and Rapuhia Scarp intersection) boundaries of the trench habitat are discussed. There is evidence of mass flow deposits, petite spot volcanism, and sedimentary basins that form complex habitats for benthic fauna. Overall data for biological communities that can be statistically compared are limited, but patterns in the distribution of selected hadal communities are described

Perception Epilepsy' Stigma [percepção De Estigma Na Epilepsia]

    No full text
Introduction: People with epilepsy often need to deal with the stigma, usually worse than the epilepsy itself. In general, epilepsy is a condition that affects the behavior and the quality of life, not only for the person with epilepsy, but also for the entire family, especially because of stigma. For this reason, we can say that epilepsy has an bio-psycho-social impact on the people's life. Paradoxically, this facet of epilepsy is not often studied, especially in resource-poor countries, as Brazil, where superstitions, negative attitudes and lack of knowledge impair the relation between the community and people with epilepsy. Purpose: This article has the objective to introduce important aspects of stigma in epilepsy: conceptualization and models of stigma in the medical and social area; stigma and quality of life; neurobiological aspects and strategies to deal with it. Conclusions: This paper provides an overview of the stigma, including its different aspects. Stigma is a multifactorial concept and for this reason, to combat stigma it requires a broad intervention, involving medical, psychological and social areas. The understanding of the process of stigma contributes to a change of the social interpretation of the epilepsy, in a direction of a construction of a society more tolerant, where the differences are respected.124207218Opala, J., Boillot, F., Leprosy among the Limba: Illness and healing in the context of world view (1996) Soc Sci Med, 42 (1), pp. 3-19Fife, B.L., Wright, E.R., The dimensionality of stigma: A comparison of its impact on the self of persons with HIV/AIDS and cancer (2000) J Health Soc Behav, 41 (1), pp. 50-67Link, B.G., Stigma and its public health implications (2001) Stigma and global health: Developing a research agendaCorrigan, P.W., Penn, D.L., Lessons from social psychology on discrediting psychiatric stigma (1999) Am Psychol, 54 (9), pp. 765-776DiIorio, C., Osborne, S.P., Letz, R., Henry, T., Schomer, D.L., Yeager, K., The association of stigma with self-management and perceptions of health care among adults with epilepsy (2003) Epilepsy Behav, 4 (3), pp. 259-267Rusch, N., Angermeyer, M.A., Corrigan, P.W., Mental illness stigma: Concepts, consequences, and initiatives to reduce stigma (2005) European Psychiatry, 20, pp. 529-539Suurmeijer, T.P., Reuvekamp, M.F., Aldenkamp, B.P., Social functioning, psychological functioning, and quality of life in epilepsy (2001) Epilepsia, 42 (9), pp. 1160-1168Fisher, R.S., Epilepsy from the Patient's Perspective: Review of Results of a Community-Based Survey (2000) Epilepsy Behav, 1 (4), pp. S9-S14Scambler, G., Hopkins, A., Generating a model of epileptic stigma: The role of qualitative analysis (1990) Soc Sci Med, 30 (11), pp. 1187-1194Baumann, R.J., Wilson, J.F., Wiese, H.J., Kentuckians' attitudes toward children with epilepsy (1995) Epilepsia, 36 (10), pp. 1003-1008Dicionário, F.A.B.H., Aurélio da Língua Portuguesa (1993) Rio de Janeiro: Editora, , Nova Fronteira;Associação de, A.D.E.P., (2004) Apoio aos doentes depressivos e bipolares, , www.admd.pt, Electronic CitationBallone, G.J., Relatório sobre a saúde no mundo (2001) OPAS-OMS-ONU, editor, , www.psiqueweb.med.br/acad/oms1.html, Electronic CitationAblon J. Introduction: Epilepsy is very prevalent in our society, but unfortunately lack of knowledge is still very common, contributing to psycho-social difficulties to people with epilepsy. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the epilepsy' perception and attitudes by professionals of emergency medical service in Campinas, Brazil. Material and methods: This study was carried out with professionals of SAMU-192, who participated on the VII Stroke Workshop of Campinas in November 2007. Results: One hundred-forty nine (149) professionals answered the questionnaire (49% women, average age of 37 years, range from 21 to 59 year). Ninety (60%) were professionals allied to medicine (nurses, health auxiliary, dentists), six (4%) were physicians and 53 (36%) were other professions (secretary, driver). In overall, a great majority of the subjects had an appropriate knowledge regarding epilepsy. But, some beliefs are still present. In relation to epilepsy' perception, some wrong ideas appeared, as epilepsy is a contagious disease, people with epilepsy can not practice physical exercise or to work. Also, the doubts regarding pregnancy and treatment of epilepsy were observed. Regarding attitudes during an epileptic seizure, some inadequate attitudes appeared: to put something in patient's mouth, to restrict the patients' movements or give something strong to smell (alcohol or vinegar) in order to stop the seizure. The main purpose of this study is to provide a critical analysis of selected literary techniques in P.T. Mtuze’s prose narratives. This study seeks to analyse his style of writing in all his texts. The aspects of his style under stylistic techniques and criticism will serve as a foundation theory that will link the study to the analysis of definitions and referencing under imagery and its aspects; including humour, satire, idioms, proverbs, literary techniques, and figures of speech. Mtuze is noted as one of the most prolific writers due to his ingenuity in language skills, especially in isiXhosa. Mtuze is one of the best humoristic writers; hence he is popular due to applying humour in the prose works he wrote. This study is divided into seven chapters, and the theory which is used for this study is also scrutinised in order to get a sense of what the author intended to deliver through his texts
