The examination John Baker servant man of George Croghan aged about nineteen years.
The examination of John Baker, servant man of George Croghan aged about nineteen years. Baker was an indentured servant at Croghan's plantation, now Fort Shirley. One day he was jumped by two Delaware Indians and taken to Kittannim, where he observed over one hundred boys and girls as prisoners. Baker estimated there were over eighty warriors and one hundred fifty French soldiers. He was told he was about thirty miles north of Fort Duquesne. Baker watched several war parties go east. One day, he was told to help a young Indian drive horses across a river. At one point, the Indian asked Baker to hold his gun, so Baker shot him and left for Fort Shirley. From the genius of man to the man of genius, part two: Inheriting (ideas about) genius
In Part One of ʻFrom the Genius of the Man to the Man of Geniusʼ I argued that classical and medieval\ud
inscriptions of genius figures suggest a coevalence between characters in their respective cosmologies,\ud
making it relatively more difficult to delineate Man from “spirits” and “other organisms”. The labour\ud
that genii performed flowed around two significant tropes of production and reproduction whose\ud
specificities were inflected in and across sources. In medieval poetry, for instance, genius figures took\ud
up a new role in regard to the reproduction trope, as promoter of virtue (in the form of censuring the\ud
seven deadly sins) and condemner of vice (in the form of prohibition against same sex intercourse).\ud
The sedimentation (complex processes of character-formation), directionality (patterns of descent)\ud
and sexual ecology (emergence of a field of ethics) that the medieval literature embodies also indexes\ud
an opening disarticulation of Man from universe and the possibility of grounding “morality” in and\ud
as His love choices. Through a series of narrative structures, binary concepts and new sources of\ud
authority under Christianity the figure now referred to in philosophy as “the subject” is given early\ud
grounds upon which to form in the medieval poems

Man waving his hat at camera on summit of Mt. Baker, probably 1901
Written on verso: The red man on top of a new mountain
From accompanying newspaper clipping: An exceedingly interesting article entitled, "An Ascent of Mount Baker," written and illustrated by George G. Cantwell, appears in the August Outing. Mr. Cantwell is the first man to take a camera to the top of this mountain. Local pride should create a demand for many copies of the magazine in Puyallup, where the author has grown to manhood.
