Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Pulchrum esse: The role of beauty in the educational programme of the Parisian St. Victor School
Educating a human being is a task that has always stood close to philosophy and sometimes has become philosophy itself, as in the life work of Socrates following the motto with heroic consistency: “Know thyself ” (scire te ipsum). European culture adopted this principle and incorporated it into its intellectual-spiritual tissue in various guises over the centuries. During the Middle Ages, in the works of Christian thinkers inspired by Neoplatonic philosophy (such as in the views of the scholars of the Saint Victor school in Paris), this tradition was combined with the motif of “being beauty” (pulchrum esse) and enriched by aesthetic thought; beauty with all its richness of form and expression, together with truth and goodness, as Plotinus wanted, marked out the path of man;s “renewal” and showed him the ultimate goal of beatum esse — being happy. The sensitivity and aesthetic sophistication of the Victorine authors of the 12th-century theory of education breathe freshness and an Epicurean joie de vivre, which certainly creates the potential to appeal to contemporary man
Refleksy estetyki wiktoryńskiej w Sekwencjach Adama ze św. Wiktora
The subject of this article is the aesthetic thought that Adam of St Victor included in his liturgical poetry in the form of a sequence. The content of the article consists of two parts, the first discusses an outline of the aesthetic views of the main masters of the Victorine school, Hugh and Richard, to which Adam belongs, in order to show in the second part how these ideas function in his Sequences. In outlining the aesthetic theory, two main ideas of Hugh’s are relevant to the Sequences under analysis: pan-aestheticism in terms of the inclusion of all five senses (in addition to sight and hearing, these include smell, taste and touch) in the perception of beauty, and the classification of categories of beauty (laid out in the treatise De tribus diebus). The analyses carried out show that Adam of St Victor was a faithful disciple of the school, especially of the master Hugh, and in his writing he drew on the achievements of his illustrious predecessors, as is evident in the range of aesthetic views analysed here.
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dyptyk o „ekologicznym” domostwie bycia — dawniej i dziś
One of the manifestations of the contemporary cultural and civilizational crisis is the ecological crisis caused by the overexploitation and devastation of the natural living environment. The root cause of this phenomenon is seen in false thinking and a narrowed cognitive perspective directed exclusively towards utilitarian processing of the world and the reduction of man as a means in the pursuit of economic gain. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, existentialists such as Martin Heidegger and Gabriel Marcel, as well as contemporary Joseph Ratzinger, warned of these dangers, postulating a return to such ideas as integral knowledge of man, God and the world directed towards wisdom, contemplation, fraternity, humility and asceticism in the sense of modesty of intention. These are not some new ideas invented for the moment; they are all to be found in the ancient heritage of European culture, especially in the forgotten, despised Middle Ages, whose wisdom and rich deposits of meaning still remain undiscovered. The works of the medieval masters containing unsurpassed syntheses of knowledge about the whole of reality, the beauty of the natural world, human dignity, the meaning of life and its ultimate goals can inspire, teach and nourish today's lost, spiritually starved man.
“Redemptive Beauty” in the Victorines’ Theory of Aesthetics
The authors of the aesthetics in the Victorines’ school are its most famous members: Hugh and his disciple Richard. Hugh was the first one who devoted a substantial part of his work to theory of aesthetics, which he included in the seventh book of the encyclopaedic work Didascalion de studio legendi. He refers there to the Neoplatonic theory of aesthetics following the Dionysian-Eriugenian theory of symbolism. In the first two parts he develops ontological foundations of aesthetics and its psychological determinants. In the ontological aspect Hugh is an objectivist and treats beauty as a constitutive property of beings. In the part concerning psychological foundations of aesthetics he introduces a specific power which combines two aspects of aesthetic experiences — spiritual and sensual. It is the so called affectio imaginaria, incorporated into the theory of psychophysical unity of human being. The issues related to the role of beauty in human life and aesthetic experience as a path leading to mystical life Hugh supplements with ethical considerations. He devotes a large part of his work to discussion of the definition of beauty. The most original part of Hugh’s aesthetics is the one in which he distinguishes formal categories of beauty: placement (situs), motion (motus), quality grasped by sight (species) and qualities experienced by other senses (qualitas). The theory of mystical contemplation of beauty understood as a process of the soul’s climbing to God analogous to Plotinian conception of ‘epistrophe’ can be considered a peculiar crowning of Hugh’s aesthetics
Elements of Mediaeval Polish National Culture
The prime period of the Polish Middle Ages is that of Jagellonian times when Poland, as a result of its union with Lithuania, formed the Republic of Two Nations and became one of the greatest European powers, playing a significant role in her cultural mission regarding the new nations within the borders of the union. It was then that intellectual culture reached a high standard, which enabled the forming of the basic ideas of freedom and tolerance, pluralism and openness. Incorporated into life, they formed national awareness and forever defined the character of Polish identity.
The sources of this culture show them to be an elaboration of consequence and a coherent socio-political idea; today too, they have the force to inspire and may participate in the understanding and evolution of national identity, to which only one needs to aspire
