    Validating a Functional Status Knowledge Graph in a Large-Scale Living Lab

    Functional Status Information refers to a person’s overall mental and physical health. Collecting and analyzing Function Status Information data is crucial for addressing the needs of a growing elderly population, as well as for providing effective care to those with chronic diseases, multiple health issues, or disabilities. Knowledge Graphs provide an effective method for organizing and representing Functional Status Information data in a structured way. Furthermore, they can also allow reasoning over this data to create personalized health support solutions that assist people in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and improving daily living. In this paper, we describe the integration of our Functional Status Knowledge Graph, namely FuS-KG, into a real-world application run within a large-scale living lab involving more than 4,000 people. We provide the road map of this experience including the challenges, the platform’s architecture, the focus on the knowledge layer, the evaluation and the insights observed

    Healthy lifestyle is not only a today trend fostered by the explosion of gluten-free foods (or similar) or by the presence on the market of many devices for monitoring how many steps you do during a day and how many calories you spent in the last twenty-four hours. Following a healthy lifestyle means also to prevent diseases as consequence of an incorrect diet or to avoid chronic pathologies that may occur after sensitive surgeries. In this paper, we present the first version of the PerKApp ontology. Here, we model concepts representing detailed foods properties, with the goal of supporting the construction of intelligent interfaces for domain experts. This ontology is part of the PerKApp project aiming to provide a full-fledged platform supporting the remote lifestyle monitoring of users by providing real-time feedback through persuasive context-based messages when necessary. Beside the ontology, the paper will also provide an overview of the PerKApp project and how the presented ontology will be used

    Automatically monitoring and supporting healthy lifestyle is a recent research trend, fostered by the availability of low-cost monitoring devices, and it can significantly contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases deriving from incorrect diet and lack of physical activity. In this paper, we present a general purpose architecture for persuasion scenarios and behavioral change. The architecture is designed to be easily portable across languages and domains and has been implemented and evaluated in a specific system for Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) called PerKApp. PerKApp provides a fully fledged platform supporting the remote monitoring of workers lifestyle by providing real-time feedback through persuasive context-based messages when necessary

    In this paper we present PerKApp, a context-aware system for inducing the user to adopt healthier lifestyles, based on a novel combination of persuasion technologies, natural language generation techniques, and deep knowledge representation tools. In our view, personalized and tailored messages generated according to the characteristic of user, user preferences and the context are extremely useful to increase the effectiveness of persuasion efforts in terms of user acceptance of the proposed behaviors. In this paper, we present the use of semantic web technologies to build an architecture for supporting the monitoring of people and for persuading them to follow healthy lifestyles. Semantic technologies are used for modeling all relevant information and for fostering reasoning activities by combining user-generated data and domain knowledge. Here, we give an overview of the whole platform and highlight the structure and the role of the ontology, how it is exploited for supporting the activities of domain experts for designing monitoring rules and how the reasoning task is performed. Finally, we provide some insights about how the reasoner's output can be used for generating persuasive messages. The scenario of promoting healthy diets has been chosen for demonstrating how the platform works in a real-world environment

    An ontology-based coaching solution for increasing self-awareness of own functional status

    Functional Status Information (FSI) describes physical and mental wellness at the whole-person level, and includes information on activity performance, social role participation, and environmental and personal factors that affect well-being and quality of life. Collecting and analyzing this information is critical to addressing the data needs in caring for aging global populations, and providing effective care for individuals with chronic conditions, multi-morbidity, and disability. In this paper, we present a first step towards the design of Al-enabled system increasing the self-awareness of own functional status. In particular, we focus on the underlying semantic layer of the such an Al-enabled system by presenting two modules extending the HeLiS ontology aiming (i) to represent barriers in improving own functional status and (ii) to support the conceptual representation of the arguments leading to the detection of such barriers. Finally, we show through a running example how these modules can be instantiated

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
